WP8
Assessment of emerging technologies
Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator
WP8 – Assessment of emerging technologies EuroVO-AIDA – First periodic review – 24 April 2009
WP Objectives
• Assess the potential usage of emerging technologies of interest to the VO in technical areas where partners are involved
• Domains of interest– Web 2.0 for data centres (CNRS)– Semantics and ontologies (INAF)– Data mining (UEDIN)
Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator
WP8 – Assessment of emerging technologies EuroVO-AIDA – First periodic review – 24 April 2009
WP8 milestones & deliverables
• Common milestones to all JRAs– Technology Forums
– IVOA Interoperability meetings
• No deliverable during the reporting period
D8.1 WP8-JRA3 intermediate report and associated prototypes
CNRS April 2009
D8.2 WP8-JRA3 final report and associated prototypes
CNRS April 2010

Interfaces with VO-TECH
• The activities are interfaced with Design Studies performed in the VO-TECH project (2005-2008, extended to June 2009). As foreseen, the detailed EuroVO-AIDA work programme has to take into account VO-TECH findings - agile strategy to maximize impact
• Web 2.0 assessment has been fully active during Year 1. The two other assessments will be mostly active during the next reporting periods.

Web 2.0 for data centres
Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator
WP8 – Assessment of emerging technologies EuroVO-AIDA – First periodic review – 24 April 2009
Rationale
• The widely used CDS services (more than 200.000 requests/day) are an excellent testbed for assessing Web 2.0 technologies
• Several aspects– Assess technology and human cost associated to quality
management of implementing the possibility for users to post annotations
– Services mash-up
– Assessment of Flex technology

Annotations
• Hot topic - High interest and interesting input gathered during the second Technology Forum
• Extensive discussion with service managers and CDS scientists for detailed requirements
• Will be released soon in one of the services (SIMBAD) as a real-size prototype. Usage and content will be carefully assessed.

WP8 – Assessment of emerging technologies EuroVO-AIDA – First periodic review – 24 April 2009
Requirements
• No a priori moderation• User identification (userid/password/email)• Annotations of the different service contents
– Information about astronomical objects and bibliographic references (SIMBAD)
– Catalogue/Table descriptions, catalogue entries (VizieR)
• Possibility to require an action from CDS (e.g. error correction, update, etc)

Expected results
• Test of the hypothesis, in particular– Users will be interested
– No need for moderation
• Assessment of the possibility to replace the current CDS hot-line by allowing different types of input– Public
– CDS only
– Action from CDS required
Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator

Service mashup• A single portal for heterogeneous data provided by
different services
• Urgent assessment to facilitate the usage of CDS services • Finally developed on VO-TECH + CDS funds• Query of the three CDS services, summary of available
results, links to the services, re-use of the results of one service in another
• Very high interest at Baltimore Interoperability meeting
• Test of the usage of Ajax – very well adapted to aggregate contents
• First implementation of user storage space at CDS (assessment of real life usage of iRODS –WP6)

Assessment of Flex technology
• Another Rich Internet Application
• Simplay (SIMBAD Display)« Intelligent » visualisation taking into account
object types
• Assessment/prototyping result– Will replace the current static clickable map– Has been adopted by WP5

Object type Ontology (INAF/CDS) (1)
• Astronomical Object Types and their relations
• A « simple » case to explore the feasibility/interest of building and using ontologies
• Servlet/JSP-based prototype developed in the framework of VO-TECH Intelligent Resource Discovery action
Françoise Genova, Project Coordinator
WP8 – Assessment of emerging technologies EuroVO-AIDA – First periodic review – 24 April 2009
Object type Ontology (INAF/CDS)
• IVOA Technical Note
• Protégé-OWL API ported to OWL API
• Full documentation will be produced and « real life » Use cases will be assessed during Year 2
e.g.validation of SIMBAD content (object type/measurement compatibility

Ontology characteristics
• Multiple inheritance• Categories
– Object types– Measurements (including value ranges)– Electromagnetic domain
• Complex properties linking concepts of different categories
• ‘Real’ constraints to keep formal logics rules but avoid problems with lacking informationIf a redshift is measured, this is an extragalactic objectand not: if extragalactic object there is a redshift

RDF-based registry (UK)
• Prototype RDF version of the IVOA Registry
• Objective: explore the usability and expressibility of the RDF result
• Will be used by the UK JISC-funded SKUA project

• This activity led by UEDIN will build upon the work undertaken in VO-TECH
• The final report on VO-TECH activity has been delayed due to project extension for 6 additional months
• Bulk of the work during Cycle 2

WP8 – Assessment of emerging technologies EuroVO-AIDA – First periodic review – 24 April 2009
• Preliminary discussion with FP7-funded ADMIRE (Advanced Data Mining and Integration Research for Europe)
• Requirement: ready means of supporting server-side data analysis services, capable of processing large data volumes
• Nota Bene: On-going proposal to create a « Data mining » Interest Group in IVOA
