Assessment of emerging technologies



WP Objectives

• Assess the potential usage of emerging technologies of interest to the VO in technical areas where partners are involved

• Domains of interest– Web 2.0 for data centres (CNRS)– Semantics and ontologies (INAF)– Data mining (UEDIN)

Interfaces with VO-TECH

• The activities are interfaced with Design Studies performed in the VO-TECH project (2005-2008, extended to June 2009). As foreseen, the detailed EuroVO-AIDA work programme has to take into account VO-TECH findings - agile strategy to maximize impact

• Web 2.0 assessment has been fully active during Year 1. The two other assessments will be mostly active during the next reporting periods.



Web 2.0 for data centres



Rationale

• The widely used CDS services (more than 200.000 requests/day) are an excellent testbed for assessing Web 2.0 technologies

• Several aspects– Assess technology and human cost associated to quality

management of implementing the possibility for users to post annotations

– Services mash-up

– Assessment of Flex technology



Annotations

• Hot topic - High interest and interesting input gathered during the second Technology Forum

• Extensive discussion with service managers and CDS scientists for detailed requirements

• Will be released soon in one of the services (SIMBAD) as a real-size prototype. Usage and content will be carefully assessed.



Requirements

• No a priori moderation• User identification (userid/password/email)• Annotations of the different service contents

– Information about astronomical objects and bibliographic references (SIMBAD)

– Catalogue/Table descriptions, catalogue entries (VizieR)

• Possibility to require an action from CDS (e.g. error correction, update, etc)

RDF-based registry (UK)

• Prototype RDF version of the IVOA Registry

• Objective: explore the usability and expressibility of the RDF result

• Will be used by the UK JISC-funded SKUA project



Data mining



• This activity led by UEDIN will build upon the work undertaken in VO-TECH

• The final report on VO-TECH activity has been delayed due to project extension for 6 additional months

• Bulk of the work during Cycle 2

• Preliminary discussion with FP7-funded ADMIRE (Advanced Data Mining and Integration Research for Europe)

• Requirement: ready means of supporting server-side data analysis services, capable of processing large data volumes

• Nota Bene: On-going proposal to create a « Data mining » Interest Group in IVOA
