Examination of various plots and conspiracies and how social interactions in this context created specific types and models of sociability.

Originality of the topic: chosen perspective of the plots and conspiracies as a fruitful way of discussing and highlighting the importance of religious and political aspects and the role played by antagonism in the development of intrigue sociabilities.

Provisional programme of the Paris workshop:

-Morning session at the Bnf Richelieu – with brief introduction on caricature : for students to look through some of the volumes in the Bnf collections of English prints.

-Afternoon workshop at MCJ using digital images and print outs: for students to look at some of the challenges of cataloguing and identifying what is being done in the prints.

-Final lecture on some aspects of British caricature: for a public audience.

(3) WORKSHOP AT TNA on “Friendship and Intimacy in Eighteenth-Century Epistolary Exchanges” (2 April 2020)

Programme of the day:

Short informal presentations of various collections (TNA, BL, BnF, MCJ) related to friendship expressions, friendship values and family intimacy, by 10 DIGITENS members from BnF, TNA, MCJ, UBO, UP13, UG.

Group discussion on publication project: format, use of collections, CFP for the November (2020) one-day conference.

Reflexion on approach to the topic:- Comparing expressions of friendship in letters and epistolary manuals across national boundaries- Evolution of letter-writing practices and letter-locking through time / evolution ofthe idea of friendship.- Love, intimacy and friendship: crossing the line in 18th-century correspondences

and paintings

Letter-locking workshop : a practical session, looking at original documents from TNA collections

To consider the connections between urban and emotional experiences in Europe during the long eighteenth century. To explore these connections through the lens of the history of sociability seeking to understand the ways in which ideals and practices of sociability helped to shape the emotional aspects of urban life.
