From the initial planning stages of last year’s inaugural WOW Derry~Londonderry, the women of the city recognised the capacity of the festival as a platform to discuss deep and serious issues, as well as a way of empowering and celebrating women and girls. This spurred a group of local women to form the North West Women’s Collective (NWWC) to run WOW here annually in partnership with Southbank Centre as a key legacy event of City of Culture 2013, and in doing so, joining the network of WOW festivals all around the world.

True to their intention, the NWWC has fundraised, planned and produced WOW Derry~Londonderry 2014. The success of last year’s events has prompted

the women to think bigger and more ambitiously for this year’s WOW. The Collective is delighted to welcome Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty, as the headline guest at this year’s festival. She joins a guest speaker list of over 100 women who, over the course of the weekend, will discuss everything from female friendships to the gender stereotypes upheld by society, from the effect that a mother’s illness has on the

family unit to the ‘Mammy Monologues’, looking at motherhood from every angle. Join us for talks on birth, death and everything in between.

All events are free of charge – please come and enjoy it all. You never know, it might just change your life.

I’m so thrilled that for a second year, the WOW - Women of the World - festival is coming to Derry~Londonderry. This year we build on that work, continuing conversations, strengthening connections, having fun, and celebrating the women of Derry all together under one roof.

There’s a whole range of ideas to explore from human rights to the benefits of Flamenco dancing, from self-defence to addiction. You’ll hear experts from across the city and beyond, and we’ll delve into difficult subjects, with safe spaces to discuss the things that matter to you most and wonderful people

to talk to and share your thoughts with.

I’m very happy that Shami Chakrabarti, Director of human rights organisation Liberty, who has helped build WOW, will be joining us in Derry this year. Don’t miss the chance to see Shami talk about women in politics and why we need them now more than ever.

Every year WOW has travelled to new places - from Alexandria in Egypt to Katherine in the Australian outback, India, and soon New York, and we’re so proud that Derry~Londonderry is such a key part of the movement. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Anna Stork and Andrea Sreshta met while studying architecture and design in graduate school. They shared an interest in solar lighting technology and a common belief that design and design thinking can be used to solve problems at a global scale, including improving access to basic resources such as lighting and power. Together they have developed the LuminAID - a solar-powered, inflatable, affordable, renewable light that has the potential to greatly improve the comfort, safety, and survival of disaster victims. Anna talks about how her entrepreneurialism is changing lives around the world.

Cyberbullying and grooming are just two of the issues facing young people in the modern world. Are we right to be concerned or has the media warped our estimation of the dangers of the online world? What types of behaviour do girls consider appropriate online and what are the potential repercussions of such actions? We ask students to discuss their views and experiences. Social networking, trolling and sexting are all up for discussion in this session. Hosted by Donna Kernaghan, Barnardo’s NI.

SPEED MENTORINGFRIDAY 7th NOVEMBER

11:15am – 12:45pmGallery

When a sanitary protection advert aimed at redefining the phrase ‘like a girl’ as something strong and powerful went viral, many women were torn between celebrating the empowering sentiment and wondering if it was too cynical to point out that its purveyors were selling a product. Like Dove before them, Always had managed to make ‘Big Business’ look something like a friend to women. Does the medium change the message? Watch the video and join the debate here.

Hosted by Kathy Donaghy.

What sort of behaviour is appropriate by boys, men and other girls towards young women?

Is there a ‘male entitlement’ problem that needs to be combated and whose problem is it?

How can we teach young women how to defend themselves against inappropriate physical and verbal behaviour and how to recognise when they are being treated badly?

Hosted by Sophie Bennett, UK Feminista.

BEING MIXED RACEFRIDAY 7th NOVEMBER

1:30pm – 2:30pmGallery

What does being ‘mixed race’ mean? Is there such a thing as a mixed-race identity? In the 2011 Census, over a million people in the UK ticked the ‘mixed race’ box – double the number who did so in 2001 when the box was first introduced. Irish Nigerian visual sociologist, Emma Dabiri, continues this moving and insightful conversation. Is the term mixed race useful to anyone other than statisticians? Can today’s increasingly fluid racial identities ever really be squeezed into a one-size-fits-all box?

UK Feminista supports people to campaign for a world where women and men are equal. Why? Because despite massive advances in the status of women, gender inequality remains rife in the UK and across the world. How can you play your part?

Sophie Bennett explains why UK Feminista believes that political, economic and social equality between women and men is possible – and why this equality will create a world that is better for everyone. But progress doesn’t just ‘happen’. It takes ordinary women and men to stand up and be counted and create the world they want to live in. Be inspired and enabled to do just that.

WOW Bites are little talks and inspiring ideas, achievements, obsessions, stories, performances or manifestos and everything in between. The WOW Bites sessions last for an hour and feature between four and six speakers, with each one talking about something completely different – come and take a chance.

Speakers include Amy Donaghey talking about the summer she spent volunteering in Kenya, Victoria Clingham and Ciara Falls from Moville Community College - ‘My Life on Crutches’ and St. Cecilia’s head girl, Ashleigh Newton, on winning a bronze medal for Judo at the Commonwealth Games.

MIND YOUR HEADSATURDAY 8th NOVEMBER

11:30am – 12:30pmGreen Room

With boot camps and personal training sessions all the rage, there’s a big trend at the minute towards people looking after their physical health. But the same attention should also be paid to one’s mental health. Enjoying good mental health is one of the keys to happiness.

This session looks at how we can take care of our minds and discusses the various mental health issues that can affect people at any point in their lives — anxiety, depression, OCD and post-natal depression included. There’s advice about how you can help yourself and also about what to do if you think someone you know might be suffering in silence. Panellists include mental health educator, Michaela McDaid, local woman Caroline McMenamin, and counsellor, Linda Cowan.

We live in a world where female inequality is embedded into society. Jude Kelly argues that in order to live a sociable and loving life, most women feel compelled to tolerate a level of inequality that makes us complicit in the continuation of the status quo. Are we capable of taking a zero tolerance approach to inequality in both our domestic and public lives? And what would be the consequences if we did? Can endemic injustice be rooted out – or are some of us resigned to improvement rather than real change, just for an easy life? Finally, are men ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with women in order to create a total shift in the world?

On 11th September 2001, our world changed. The West’s response to 9/11 has morphed into a period of exception from human rights norms. Governments have decided that the rule of law and human rights are often too costly.

Now, Shami Chakrabarti – who joined Liberty, the UK’s leading civil rights organisation, on 10th September 2001 – explores why our fundamental rights and freedoms are indispensable. She talks with Jude Kelly about the unprecedented pressures those rights are under today.

Drawing on her own work in high-profile campaigns, from privacy laws to anti-terror legislation, Chakrabarti shows the threats to our democratic institutions and why our rights are paramount in upholding democracy.

The topic of death has been in the headlines recently, thanks to the courage of the late Lynda Bellingham who spoke so bravely about living with a terminal illness. We’re all going to die and yet the topic of dying is rarely discussed. This panel puts the subject of death on the table and looks at ways we can face our own death or cope with the imminent death of a loved one. Panellists talk about how people can prepare for death, how they can learn to cope with a terminal diagnosis or how to be there for a friend or loved one whose death is imminent. The aim of the session is to help people feel more comfortable about talking about death. Panellists include Marie Dunlop, Clinical Ward Sister, Foyle Hospice and counsellor Christine Cowley. Solicitor Paddy Kelly is also here to talk about wills.

What internal barriers are preventing women from achieving their true potential? Is ‘ambition’ still perceived as a dirty word? The Mammy Monologues is an exciting new multimedia project, looking at motherhood from every angle. While every experience of motherhood is unique, we believe there is a universality to being a mother - and it’s time we spoke openly, honestly and without judgement about all aspects our relationship with the notion of motherhood.Compiled by journalists Claire Allan and Anne Marie Scanlon, The Mammy Monologues has been collating stories from women from across Ireland and the UK with the intention of sharing those stories - in many cases anonymously - on their website, Facebook page, in published form and on the stage.Women of the World 2014 sees the official launch of this breakthrough look at motherhood. Join us as three actresses share just some of the monologues which have been submitted so far - on topics including pregnancy loss, choosing to be childfree, giving birth and that first positive pregnancy test. There follows a Q&A with Claire Allan and Anne Marie Scanlon - all contributions are welcome.

SUNDAY 9TH NOVEMBER

A light-hearted chat with a panel of articulate and witty women and men about the stereotypes that exist for each gender. Can women play football, change tyres, put up shelves and be good drivers? If men sew, wear pink and cry at ‘chick flicks’, does this make them any less masculine? What is the future for the age-old ‘Gender Wars’ – is there a truce in sight?
