Would you write a blank check ?
Would you allow your employees to spend
whatever they wanted on workplace
products or services . . . and still expect to
stay in business?
The answer is probably “no.”
Do you provide insurance
benefits for your workforce, yet
fail to stress how important good
stewardship is “in the way those
benefits are spent?”
The answer might be a resounding “maybe.”
Have the insurance benefits you provide become so
expensive you’ve had to minimize benefits, go to
higher deductibles or shift the cost to your
employees (effectively lowering their
compensation)?
The answer could well be
“we’re getting there fast.”
Are you frustrated by the need to find the
right balance between encouraging and
supporting employees to make healthy
lifestyle choices, without overstepping
legal and ethical boundaries?
The answer is probably “yes. It’s a
tough one.”
Do you think maybe it’s time to
step in, get involved in “their
business” by creating the
opportunity to improve
unhealthy lifestyle behaviors?
The answer should be “yes, absolutely yes!”
(At this point, getting involved in “their business” is “your business,” literally.)

What impresses me most is that five years after we
completed our LoneStart Team Esteem Challenge, our
healthier behaviors are still evident. We continue to
have great participation and my hospital continues to
derive the many benefits of a fitter, happier, more
engaged team. This is the best investment I’ve
made as a hospital administrator.
