Good communication between the board
members and the membership of the WAC is
important for the continued growth and
improvement of the club. If you have any
concerns or questions, please feel free to contact
Dear Reader,
I would like to praise your good citizenship,
you obviously listened to our appeal to go to the WAC
polling station as last night at the AGM, the minimum
voting threshold was easily surpassed and our new
board elected. The lovely ladies that adorn our cover
page are not the winner of the WAC beauty pageants,
although they could, but are our new board. Welcome
ladies !!!
I would like to welcome Judy Burckhardt , our
new library chairperson; new ideas,
movies and library promotions may follow. I know
that Judy is keen on feedback and so please do not
hesitate to request your movies wish list and such.
This issue is dedicated to the AGM. Our financial
report might be of particular interest to you and a true
credit to the leaving board. ( p.7-8) As to the new
board project, I urge you to read Carol's wise words ( p
4) and if you missed last night AGM have a look at ,
Annouk (Kummer-Wheli's) piece ( p 11-12).
So it is with a heavy heart that I close the door to our
old board and a magical year - the fine camaraderie of
working together, the constant laughter along the way
as well as the strong commitment that bonds us
all together. It is also with a light foot that I open the
door to the new WAC year and its opportunities. .

President’s NotePresident’s Note Carol ConzelmannCarol Conzelmann
Dear WAC members,
Our WAC AGM has just taken place and I‗m thrilled, honored and a little nervous that in just a few days time I‗ll be taking on the challenge of being our new President.
Sharon has done an outstanding job and we‗ve been very lucky to have both her and her great team of Board members and Chairpersons. Our finances are in excellent shape, membership numbers are strong and school enrollments are at an all time high. We have lots of courses running and many great special events to enjoy. The WAC is really a place to make friends - and a club to be proud of.
Thanks to the Nominations Committee headed by Anouk, almost all of our Board and Chairperson positions are filled, with a good mix of experience and new enthusiasm! Thanks to each and every one of you for having the courage to give it a go - I trust none of us will regret it!
I hope that during the coming year we can continue to spend our money wisely and well, support the LTCS and our valued permanent WAC employees and further raise awareness of the WAC throughout the local community. I‗m delighted to see that our Boys‗ club is starting up again and I hope that will encourage the silent half of our membership (the men!) to get more involved. I‗m also seriously on the prowl to find a playgroup coordinator so we can give this important arm of the WAC the encouragement and attention it deserves.
Most of all, we would like to see all our members active in the club, and we‗ll be thinking of ways to make volunteering more attractive, more appreciated and above all lots of fun.
Here‗s to a great year!
Cheers
Day after day our feet carry us on our way. With lit-
tle thought and seldom enough care.
So…….Treat your feet and yourself to some regen-
erating TLC. A relaxing footbath, gentle grooming
of nails and removal of all dry skin then a foot mas-
sage.
Only 15mins from the WAC and it‘s not a problem if
the kids come with.

Farewell and Welcome
We say a sad farewell to Judith Winkelman, our Club Office Manager for the
last 3½ years, who will be leaving her position end of March. Judith, I recall
introducing you some 2 years ago as the “glue that holds the WAC together” -
without you and your important work, the WAC would be in a mess. Thank
you for all you have done to help keep our club running smoothly and efficiently. We wish you well as
you pursue your personal interests and goals.
A hearty congratulations goes to our WAC member, Jennifer Langkjaer who, since the 15th March, has
taken over as Club Office Manager. Jennifer has been a part of the WAC for many years, having been
everything from to cake-baker (her words) to president. In other words she is very familiar with the
WAC. Jennifer, welcome to the WAC in yet another role to add to your list! We look forward to
working with you and wish you all the best in your new position.
Kind regards
Sharon and the WAC Board

Nomcom Announcement Annouk Kummer-Wehli
The 2011 Annual General Meeting took place on Tuesday, March 29th . The outgoing board
were all present and a dozen members attended the meeting. Thank you very much to all the
absentee voters who took time to support the clubby casting their votes . Presented below
is the new Board of Directors for 2011/2012:

A quorate was reached with 84 active members casting their votes during this election, and
each candidate was unanimously voted into their positions. Fortunately, 2 of the 3
candidates for the other open board positions were present at the meeting, so they were
able to introduce themselves and will be appointed by the new board if no one else steps
forward.
Please give a hand to these ladies who have chosen to help guide the WAC down the road of
fun parties, great playgroups, numerous clubs, extra-curricular classes and the fantastic
Learning Tree School with it„s loving teachers. The WAC thrives only when it„s membership
keep the ball rolling, so a BIG thank you on behalf of the Nominations Committee to all the
new (and current) volunteers who make everything happen. We hope the outgoing board has
had a memorable and fun year. We thank them for their blood, sweat and tears!
WAC on Track Page 12
At their first board meeting, the nominations for all standing committee chairs will be
confirmed. This is the last you„ll hear from us until the end of the year when the new
Nominations Committe will announce the hunt for new board members/chairpersons and so
until then!! Our parting words would be a plea to try and help out with the small stuff like
emptying the dishwasher (even if you didn„t drink a cup of tea or coffee), tidying up the
toys (even if your child didn„t play with them), helping the playgroup leaders (even if you„re
not signed up to help on that day), helping the librarian on duty (even if you just want to go
home after picking up your child– the librarian feels the same way!)... If it looks like people
are scrambling around decorating or the toilets look filthy/gross/smelly, gather up the
courage, take ownership and ask, „Can I help?“, even if it means you may not get to read
your magazine in peace while the kids are in class!
One last shout out goes to Nancy Dodds, Eleonore Jacobi-Wolter, Susan Sankey-Keller,
Sharon Warthmann and Mairi Weder-Gillies for helping out with the Nominations
Committee election preparations and at the AGM. It was a real pleasure working with you all
and I learned enough to make sure that the next year„s NomCom announcement won„t be as
informal as my was...
Thank you so much for reading and we wish you a fun-filled year with new friends, good
times and fond memories at the WAC.

WAC IN MOTION Angela Watson
It was like the clock turned back 25
years...almost. The WAC to the Future party
was a rocking success with mirror balls, rubik‘s
cubes and a decade of great movies, t.v .shows
and hits from the shoulder pad era of the 80s.
Huge thanks to co-hosts, Anouk, Timara and
Stuart Lewis (and their helpful kids) for decorat-
ing, music, vodka test tube shots and retro-
sweetie goodie bags and of course for putting
so much effort into their costumes (with Stuart
winning the prize for best-dressed man). Mat‘s
techno-geek surpassed all expectations with his
fantastic movie clips from the 80s beamed onto
the wall and his ―hippy shake‖ behind the bar –
not quite Tom Cruise but love him anyway for
his efforts with the cocktails.
Congratulations to our door prize winners,
Zalina and Jui-Ling and to our best dressed
woman, Mirjam Egli-Rohr – it was like Kylie Mi-
nogue had ―stepped back in time‖ when she
walked through the door, with her Don Johnson
look-alike Thomas on her arm. It was hard to
choose from the 80s ―has to be‖ rather than
wanna-bes but it was fun watching them strut
their stuff on the dance floor. There were those
who preferred to sip their caipirinhas and cos-
mos whilst pondering over the ―Totally 80s Triv-
ial Pursuit‖ questions…congratulations to the
winners of the voucher to Poseidon restaurant,
Jennifer and Thomas Langkjaer who spent the
best part of 3 hours pondering over them (by
the way ―Bob‖ was not an answer to any of the
questions – nice try though). I have to admit it
was quite a giggle reading some of the re-
sponses – but I won‘t name and shame.
Thank you to all of you that came and sup-
ported us and made this party a great hit and
hope that the hangovers weren‘t too painful. A
third of the profits will be donated to the Cancer
Association (Krebsliga) charity, so your efforts
to drain the bar were worth it. Special thanks to
Kattia Stafford who very kindly came in on Sun-
day to help us return the WAC to its ―normal‖
state. So this party girl packs up her blondie (if
you were there you know what I mean) and
books her hip replacement operation as her
body told her the next day she is no longer 15 –
but she had a most excellent adventure and
hopes that the WAC will continue to ―party on
dude‖.
Angela, Timara, Mat, Stuart and Anouk

Hi WAC Members!
The Library Buyer would like to know how our members
would like us to spend our Library funds when getting new DVD‟s.
Keep in mind that the Library only makes 30 to 40 CHF per month
from our DVD rentals. With that money would you like to have
new releases (which means that we could buy about 2 new DVD‟s
per month) or oldies but goodies (which means we could buy about
3-4 new DVD‟s per month)? If you are not familiar with DVD
buying, generally new releases are much more expensive than
DVD‟s 6 months to a year old. If you have an opinion about this,
please send your feedback to [email protected].
Thank you.
Also our 4+ star new movies for this month are the following:
Charlie St. Cloud
Shrek Forever After
How to Train Your Dragon
Barbie Thumbelina
The Horse Whisperer
(Star ratings are based on Amazon.de as of the time of this writing.)
Lastly, if you have a DVD or children‟s book wish, just tell your
friendly librarian or e-mail me (see above e-mail address). I keep a
list of it & a lot of what I buy comes from people‟s wish lists. (But
please also be patient. Library funds are limited to whatever we
make from DVD rentals & lots of people have different requests.)
To celebrate Easter, all DVD‟s for the week before Easter are 2 for 1. Also you can
buy a Multi-DVD Card from the Library again. (Cost is 16 CHF per card.). Pre-pay for 4
DVD‟s and get the 5th DVD for free.
Thank you for your time! Happy Easter!
Warm Regards,
Judy

READERS GONE WACky Nadia Fernandez
In March, the
Readers Gone
WACky read
The Long
Song by An-
drea Levy.
Andrea Levy is a British writer of Jamai-
can origin. In 2004 she was awarded the
Orange Prize for her novel Small Island.
The Long Song, her latest work, tells the
story of a black woman named July, from
the moment she‟s conceived as a result of
her mother‟s rape, through her life as a
slave on a Jamaican plantation to her com-
fortable old age living in her son‟s house.
July experiences many losses: she‟s torn
from her mother at the age of nine, gives
away her firstborn child, witnesses her
mother‟s execution, loses the man she
loves and their child. The contents of The
Long Song, both July‟s personal story and
the fight of the black population to free
themselves from slavery, are dramatic and
at times very brutal. But Andrea Levy still
manages to infuse her narration with wit
and humour. July is not depicted as just a
victim, but as a resourceful woman who
keeps moving on.
All the attending members of the Book
Club liked Andrea Levy’s novel, although
some of us preferred Small Island.
Most of us weren’t aware before read-
ing The Long Song that Jamaica had
known slavery for over 300 years.
Therefore our very lively discussion
centered mainly on this topic, but also
on the description of the main charac-
ters, both black and white, and the ra-
cism among black people themselves.
Our main point of criticism was that it
seems implausible that a woman of so
little education as July would be able to
tell a lengthy story so eloquently. We
also wished the author would have told
us more about the culture and traditions
of the black people. Still, The Long
Song manages to convey very vividly
what life as a slave was like in 19th
century Jamaica and what prize the
black population had to pay to gain its
freedom.
Our next meeting is scheduled for April
13, at 8 PM at the WAC. We’ll be dis-
cussing The Guernsey Literary and Potato
Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and
Annie Barrows. New members welcome!

In the meanwhile, a big THANK YOU to

Here is an easy recipe you might like to save for the future (like next St. Patrick's Day). I made it for my friend's Coffee Morning on St. Patrick's Day & had lots of requests for 2nds. I'm calling it American Irish Coffee because my friends here (Swedish, English, Brazilian, & Swiss) told me that this is not Irish Coffee the European way. (Apparently the European way uses plain whiskey & sugar instead of Bailey's Irish Cream which is actually whiskey based with a lot of cream & sugar in it.) But as I said, my friends loved it & said that it tasted just like the ones they have bought in the past. American Irish Coffee 200 ml Regular Hot Coffee 50-60 ml Bailey's Irish Cream Whipped Cream Instructions: 1. Pour Bailey's Irish Cream into your cup of coffee. 2. Top with whipped cream (the one from the can is fine too). Optional: For a really strong Irish Coffee, add a teaspoon of extra whiskey. Slainte!!

ON YOUR BIKE!
Although I refuse to put my skis away yet, here are some tips if you are looking forward to seeing your bike again!
If you want to go out for a day excursion with your bike using the train, you must buy a ticket for your
bike – Fr. 18 for the day pass or Fr. 12 if you possess a half-fare card or GA www.sbb.ch
Good bike trips to do for the day using the train to get to your departure point: Zug to Cham (5km),
Rapperswil to Schmerikon, Romanshorn to Kreuzlingen along Lake Constance, Schaffhausen to Rheinfalls (3km)
You can rent bikes (including electric bikes) at some train stations for your day trips: children‘s bikes,
bike seats, trailers www.rentabike.ch
You can borrow bikes free of charge for the day in Zurich City. Take ID and SFr. 20 deposit.
www.zuerirollt.ch. Great idea for when you have friends or relatives visiting you
There are guided tours of Zurich city by bike during the day and evening from May-October
www.zurichbybike.ch
Your bike must have a vignette stuck on it. You can purchase this vignette from the post office,
supermarket, sports shops. This compulsory vignette represents your liability insurance which protects you against any damage to another person or another person‘s property whilst out on your bike. For families, you can buy a pack of 4 vignettes from MigrosXX. It is important to keep the receipt in case you have to make a claim on this insurance
If you are looking for a second-hand bike or you have an unwanted bike to sell, watch out for what is
called a Veloborse in your local village.
