Dear all,
HOLIDAY, Sun, Sea & loads of ...relaxation are hopefully in
store over our well earned Summer break.
In a nutshell, holidays imply a mad rush before closing the
shop for the summer. Taking stock of recent months, I
realised how much I enjoyed being involved in the thick of
it all as well as how long a list of thanks is, that should be
given to all our WAC unsung heroes; the list is so extensive
that I could not possibly praise each individual. So, here is a
collective THANK YOU TO EACH ONE OF YOU THAT
MAKES THE DAILY MAGIC HAPPEN.
A tad of melancholy draws on me as well as I think of the
fun filled last month, all revealed on page 11. But a thrill of
excitement simultaneously shoots through as I think of
what awaits us, come August 23. All is revealed from page
16 onwards. Maybe some of you might be inspired to
contribute with a new Communal Project come
September ? Let us know. We are always on the lookout for
new talent. On that subject, I would like to welcome to our
team Barbara Duss, she is our new internet wizard.
I wish you all a great restful summer and till August. .....

Day after day our feet carry us on our way.
With little thought and seldom enough care.
So…….Treat your feet and yourself to some
regenerating TLC. A relaxing footbath, gentle
grooming of nails and removal of all dry skin
then a foot massage.
Only 15mins from the WAC and it’s not a prob-
lem if the kids come with.

Dear WAC family
Firstly, an enormous thank you to the WAC
board for pulling off a very successful BBQ
on 12th June. You are a great bunch of
ladies, and I can hear the WAC members
applauding you! And of course, a great big
thank you to all the members who got stuck
in volunteering shifts and taking on various
jobs to make the whole afternoon a very
exciting, fun time. Our 2 girls and I took it
upon ourselves to pray for good weather,
and God answered our prayers with perfect
-for-BBQ weather! Not too hot, not too
cold, and no rain – just perfect! In the end,
we were just over 200 people present! Wow!
One more thing I must mention again, is our
WoT online. Go to our new website, and be
convinced yourself. It is beautiful and
colourful – something you cannot quite
imagine if you have only ever read a black
and white copy of the WoT - and looks quite
professional, thanks to Nancy’s hard work.
All those who prefer to read it online,
receive an email informing them that the
newest WoT has been uploaded to the
website, and then you can read it at your
leisure, at home, with your cup of coffee,
and enjoy everything in colour. I have been
converted!! Please let Yvette know if you
would prefer to read it online in the future.
Wishing you a
wonderful, safe and
sunny summer break.
Until 23rd August….
Yours
Sharon

DECORATION
COMMITTEE
Our entire supply of decora-
tions originally was conceived for the old club-
house in Volketswil. It was a tiny barrack that
was at magical times throughout the year com-
pletely transformed to a Haunted house or a win-
ter wonderland complete with twinkling dark blue
ceilings. At Easter time the feeling of spring and
the Easter bunny was everywhere.
These decorations are now over ten years old,
some quite worn and faded.
Do you like to draw, paint, create sceneries, saw,
make props?
We are looking to re-vamp the Special Events
Party decorations: Halloween, Christmas and
Easter
First step: review the current Halloween decora-
tions in June!

Mum's Spa week-end.
Yes after a lengthy wait the WAC mum's w/e
happened. Ten of us went to a beautiful 4 stars
wellness- hotel in the Austrian's Alps. We were all
looking forward to pampering, relaxation and rest.
Much relaxation and pampering went on, but as to
rest it would be fair to say that not much happened.
I found myself thinking how much hard work it was
packing in on all the fun, whilst our loving husbands
were quietly at home with the kids. A vast choice
of activities were on offer: facials, massages, body
wraps, superb sauna facilities, fitness sessions,
beautiful hikes (weather allowing), lingering around
the swimming pool or simply sitting in the cosy
"Stube" drinking tea, eating yummy cakes and
chatting the afternoon away were just some of the
options available.
It is fair to say that after this memorable week end, I
feel more connected to my fellow WAC members.
Naturally, our daily laughter and nightly banters
were all part of the bonding process. Sadly on this
topic I will just say that what happened in Austria
stays in Austria. So rest assured ladies, that no
picture of our ladies w/e will emerge on Facebook.
We are all most anxiously awaiting the 2011
wellness experience. In the meantime and as a way
to prolong the fun we had, we shall all pretend to
be ladies of leisure and watch Carrie Bradshaw
latest cinematic adventure whilst sipping
Cosmopolitans. Special thanks go to our president
Sharon Warthmann for organising this fun packed
w/e. Finally, this week end would not have been
possible without our fantastic husbands that stayed
at home with our kids... A BIG THANK YOU.
Sincerely, look forward to repeat the experience
and hope to see many more of you - if the hotel will
have us again!!!!!.

WAC on Track Page 6
On June 5th, I attended
Robin Mueller’s production
of Peter Pan and Wendy,
the classic story by James
Barrie. The 80 minutes long
show was thoroughly enter-
taining. In truth, I only
went to see my daughter
Ava dance around the stage
as a bird in the play ,along with her ballet
classmates - Ava takes Ms. Robin’s class on
Friday afternoons and loves it. I was sur-
prised by how much I was drawn to the
story, all the characters I recall from the
book, including the featured leads – Peter
Pan and Wendy – a perfect little Tinkerbell,
the pirates of Neverland, the Lost Boys, a
tick-tocking crocodile, Indians, mermaids,
Wendy’s brothers and of course Captain
Hook, played by Ms. Robin herself.
Ms. Robin’s show included enough action in a
relatively short span of time to keep the au-
dience captivated – we were treated to
fighting pirates, dancing Indians, daring res-
cues, and more. I can also say that the
whole cast performed like true profession-
als. The singing was lovely, the acting su-
perb and the dancing fantastic.
Ms. Robin both directed and choreographed
the show. I would recommend that anyone
who didn’t have the opportunity to go this
month, see it in December when it will be
performed a second time. The shows will
run at the Zentrum Karl de Grosse theater
in Zürich. For further information check
out Ms. Robin’s website: robinmuellermusi-
cals.com. I know my daughter would like to
go again and I would be happy to accompany
her.

5,4,3,2,1....GO!
Just 12 short hours after the
end of the first, fantastic
and fun-filled WAC Barbeque
party, 6 WAC
"Frauen" (Ladies!!) met at
Zurich HB to board a train to
the Swiss capital city Bern
(Yes, we really were on a
train at 7am on a Sunday!).
DESTINATION: 24.
Schweizer Frauenlauf (24th
Swiss Ladies Run) Sunday
13th June 2010
MISSION: To run 10
Kilometers as fast as our
party-worn feet could run -
oh and have fun!
RESULT: Mission
Accomplished.
It was a mild dry morning in
Bern (compared to wet again
Zurich) with the sun staying
conveniently behind the
clouds during the race -
perfect running
conditions! Post-race the sun
came out shining over our
outside restaurant table,
again perfect conditions to
celebrate our achievements
and compare times and
blisters!
The Frauenlauf takes place
every June in Bern, it
attracts over ten thousand
competitors from all over
Switzerland. The race offer a
variety of categories from
5km to 10km runs, Nordic
walks and girls races, you only
have to be female to qualify.
Bern city centre comes to a
standstill and becomes a
fantastic course taking
competitors through a tour
of its beautiful and historic
city. The atmosphere is also
fantastic with many of the
local residents and children
lining the route to cheer on
and splash much appreciated
cool water on competitors.
There are also music bands
lining the route playing
upbeat tunes to lift the spirit
and much more importantly
keep those thousands of feet
moving!
As much as running is an
individual sport there is no
doubt that it can bring people
together. Our WAC team
certainly came together on
the day and enjoyed every
minute, second and mili-
second...and for those only
reading this far just to find
out what sort of times us
ladies are capable of - all you
need to know is that most of
us came in under an hour!!
Perhaps whilst you pencil in
the next WAC Barbeque for
June 2011 you can also pencil
in the Frauenlauf, and
perhaps next time we will be
more than 6......
Trust us - it's not Mission
Impossible!!

Please do not bring any unwanted items from your home (e.g. books,
furniture, kitchen items, clothing, toys) to the WAC without prior
permission from Maria Wightman our Int/exterior chairperson
([email protected]). The WAC has plenty of "stuff" already, and
it is seldom that we need even more. Please DO NOT dump your
unwanted items on us, as then a volunteer has to especially take the
time to dispose of it correctly, and this is not fair
WAC on Track Page 8
You can always count on those WAC ladies
To plan a damn good day
Not too much sun to tire us out
But rain clouds that stayed away
And there’s something special about a party
That Mr Mickey Mouse will attend
With so much to see and more to do
You really want the day not to end
The Bar B was a masterpiece
To rival any you’d find in Oz
And who needs an excuse for pony rides?
Do it. Just because
The men and boys worked up a sweat
Competing at tug of war
Maybe next year, there’ll be beating sun
So Stuart takes his shirt off. Phwoar!
The kids made dens in the Woodland
With paints all over their faces
More cheering ensued as we brightened the mood
With more boys in fast sack races.
The Bingo was a triumph
Although, a little new to some
And would probably have made a little more sense,
If Tim hadn’t got the numbers wrong
So thanks to all that helped us
And thanks to all that came
Cos if it was just me, alone with my food
It wouldn’t have been the same

The WoT June issue went to print before
the May meeting took place, so as promised
here is a recap of the activities in May:
The Diamonds have the opportunity every 2
years to do a very special outing with their
Dads. The Father-Daughter event took
place at Blue Point Sport Center in Uster.
The fun started with a round of Badminton
and was followed by Mini-Golf. Comments
received from the parents were “brilliant, a
change of pace, and well worth the trip” The
girls rated it as cool to be with their Dads.
Thank you to the Moms who stepped in for
the Dads unable to attend. The girls feel
really supported by you.
The Stars had a morning where they were
introduced to various concepts dealing with
growth and development. Puberty with its
physical and emotional challenges was dis-
cussed. They were able to exchange their
thoughts about family, friends and growing
up pressures. Of course all this “heavy
stuff” had a fun side to it. Bettina Stiefel
was on hand to discuss skin care during pu-
berty, provide hands on practice to proper
skin care and introduce the girls to age ap-
propriate make-up styling. It was a real
pleasure to see our preteens look so radiant.
Good ideas tend to lead to more good ideas
so our next topic will be color. How color can
affect our appearance and impact on our
mood. The session will have a very practical
side to it, as each girl will have the opportu-
nity to discover which colors flatter them
individually. There will be a few spots avail-
able to friends or other WAC girls outside
the Girls Club. (See separate announcement)
Save the date Sept. 4th
In June both groups made their way over to
Fohrbach in Zollikon for some indoor water
fun. Water slides, a large floating tube that
acted as ship plus a very different round of
water volleyball accounted for our laughter
and memorable moments. We are a group
that comes together to play, learn and ex-
change cultural values. Part of this process
entails moving on. We are sad to know our
very dear members: Sarah Moller,
Marianne and Joanne Chadwick will be re-
turning to Sweden and England respectively.
They have been solid Girls Club members and
will be very much missed. Out of this comes
the idea to follow them and their new adven-
tures as pen pals!

READERS GONE WACky MaryAnn Little Alice Knöpfel
The Readers Gone WACky read
Northline by singer, songwriter and author
Willy Vlautin for the May meeting. This sparse
novel depicts the hard lives of American losers
living in Las Vegas and Reno. Allison John-
son, pregnant at 22 by her white supremacist
boyfriend, runs from her dysfunctional family in
Las Vegas to secretly have her baby and give
him up for adoption in Reno, Nevada. A high-
school drop out with a drinking problem, she
stumbles and crashes through her makeshift
life, making progress with the help of a few
kindhearted misfits along the way. Through all
her ups and downs she keeps a running com-
mentary with Paul Newman, perhaps an ersatz
father figure and the only reasonable voice she
can conjecture, based on many hours of
watching his movies.
While readers flinched at Allison’s dismal life
and bad choices, the straight-forwardness of
the narrative drew in the readers. Some mem-
bers remarked on the honesty of the story, cit-
ing similar observations of young people going
down bad paths even in Switzerland. Although
the novel is written in the third person, mem-
bers found it very personal. The shocking de-
tails made it difficult for some members to form
a perspective on the book as a piece of litera-
ture. The group discussed themes of under-
class, culture, racism and fear in the book.
With mixed reviews the Readers Gone WACky
found Northline a coming-of-age story of un-
sentimental realism and a worthwhile choice
for brave readers.
On September 1, we will discuss The Help by
Kathryn Stockett. Ian McEwan’s Solar will be
the topic of our October 6 meeting. All of our
meetings take place at 8 p.m. in the Club
Lounge. New members are always welcome!
Please call Alice Knoepfel (044-912-2326) or
Mary Ann Little (044-991-7939) for more infor-
mation.

The WAC playgroups will
also be 'on holiday' during the summer break - but
there are a couple of changes when we start up
again towards the end of
August which I'd like to inform you about.
Jess Bretthauer, who has led many
playgroups and done a fantastic
job over the past few years, has
moved away from Uster and although we hope to
still see her around the WAC, she won't be able to
host the Thursday morning playgroup any
more. However, I'm happy
to announce that I'm taking it over. We'll still be
called the Coffee Tots but the age range will be the
same as the 'normal' playgroups - from 0-4
years old. The really
great news is that the Friday
playgroup '3 Little Monkeys'
will continue as well. Ellie Shepard, who
is mom to Toby and Chloe,
will be the new playgroup leader and the timings and
age range will be unchanged.
Both Ellie and myself would love to have
some help, so if you're interested in co-hosting a
playgroup (even if not every week) then please
give either of us a call or just drop in and see what's
involved. It's lots of fun
and a good chance to meet friends - for both you and
your little ones! Have a great summer
break and look forward to seeing you again - or
meeting you - once we're back in business.

LIBRARY NEWS Kadi Heinloo
Dear everyone,
Summer is finally here, at least when I
look at my calendar and not out the window
while writing this. Ahead of the long vacation
period, you will need to stock up on reading
material for long lazy afternoons at the beach
or in a lounger in your garden. We have hun-
dreds of books to choose from, starting with
serious thought-provoking novels and ending
with light summer
read. Don't forget
your children either –
an enchanting adven-
ture in a book might
just be what they
need on a rainy after-
noon.
When you have grown tired of reading, it
would be great to have a stack of entertain-
ment laying around in the form of DVDs. Take
advantage of the pre-holidays offer of 2
DVDs for the price of 1, and be prepared
for the week-long rain storm that you know is
going to happen during the school holiday.
Here it would probably be useful to re-
mind you all that THE LIBRARY WILL BE
CLOSED FROM JULY 3 TO AUGUST 15.
You can still return the borrowed items over
the summer in the returns locker, otherwise,
please be sure to extend their rental period
before we close.
I would also like to take the opportunity
to officially thank all the wonderful volun-
teers I have had the luck to work with during
this not-too-long a stint as the library chair-
person. Your time and efforts are greatly ap-
preciated by me and the whole WAC member-
ship. A particularly warm THANK YOU goes
to all the volunteers that won't be coming
back after the holidays – you will be sorely
missed. And of course, we need to find re-
placements, so when your schedule for the
next term has become clear, see if maybe you
have an hour or two a week to spend for the
good of the club by volunteering in the li-
brary.
As to the plans for the next term: we're
certainly hoping to continue with the story
time that some of our bravest volunteers
have taken upon themselves, although we will
have to see which times would work out best
with the new school and playgroup schedule.
We are hoping to expand our CD collection
with children's songs and stories (work won-
ders on long car rides, tested and proven!).
We will have loads of new books and DVDs
waiting for you when you return from your
holiday, for instance the Vampire Diaries se-
ries by L.J. Smith for young adults, which has
also been made into a popular TV series. If
your teenager loves Twilight series, try these
books out on her as well. We'll also have more
of the hilarious Diaries of the Wimpy Kid (by
Jeff Kinney) and confessions of Georgia
Nicolson (by Louise Rennison). We are con-
stantly buying new books from various authors
for the younger readers, and the adult fiction
section is continuously supplemented with
your generous donations. So if you finally de-
cide to tackle the huge task of cleaning up
the house (what else are holidays for, after
all), don't throw away any books, DVDs or CDs
you decide to discard, but bring them to the
library and give them a chance to entertain
someone else.
On behalf of the library volunteer team
I wish you all a wonderful summer and wel-
come back in August!

Business UpdateBusiness Update Angela WatsonAngela Watson
As this is a double issue, once again you are
bombarded with an abundance of information
on what we have on offer at the club this
month and the new school year...so pay
attention there will be questions at the end!
This is also the “THANK YOU” issue – another
school year draws to the end and such a
successful WAC year would not have been
possible without the help and hard work of
several dedicated members. Firstly, to my
wonderful co-chair Andrea, who really is the
strength and support of the business position –
it’s such a pleasure (not to mention relief) to
have her organisation, co-operation and
dedication to ensuring all our long-term
courses continue to run so smoothly. Andrea
has also managed to organise Hip Hop and
Street Dance classes for the kids and Body Art
for the grown ups – if you hurry you can still
make the trial classes by signing up on the
notice board.
None of our courses would be able to occur if it
wasn’t for the commitment from the teachers
involved. Elisabeth Karth has been our
beloved German teacher for nearly 4 years
and sadly her time with us has come to an end.
We are forever grateful for her perseverance
and patience with us. Meike Kirk, WAC
member and mother of 2 lovely boys, has
agreed to take over as the new German
teacher and will be offering beginner,
intermediate and advanced German lessons
on a Wednesday evening. If you are
interested in coming for a trial class please
indicate your level on the notice board.
Our little dancers enjoyed performing in Robin
Mueller’s production of Peter Pan in June.
Robin has been a long term teacher at the
WAC and her classes always bring a smile of
pride from any parent watching their little
“twinkle toes” perform. We are enrolling for the
new semester’s courses, so please ensure you
fill out a course registration form and hand it
into the office. That way, we know whether we
can continue to offer courses in the new school
year.
Sandy Frey has been working really hard
teaching babies to tweens the essential life-
saving skill of swimming and having my 2 older
children in her lessons I can speak from
experience that she really gets results fast. If
you would like your own Little Mermaid,
contact Sharon Warthmann to register your
interest for next year’s swimming classes –
spaces fill up fast for this popular course, so
don’t leave it too late.
Sprechen Sie Englisch? Well you could with a
new course we hope to start in September, led
by long-term member Kate Eibeck. Beginner’s
and intermediate level in English are welcome
to come to a free trial classes on the 7th and 9
th
September – non-members are welcome to
attend too, so just sign up on the notice board
so that we know how many are coming – we
are limited to a maximum of 8 people in each
class.
Onto even more dance classes. Belly aching, I mean belly dancing has been at the WAC for over 4 years and I can honestly say from personal experience that it is so much fun we should all do it. Anisa Rothen brings such
infectious spirit and flair every Monday evening that the rest of the week is spent looking forward to the next class.
WAC on Track Page 20
We welcome anyone to join and trust me
when I say no previous experience, physical
ability or co-ordination is required and we
charge per person, not by how many bellies
you bring with you. We hope to organise an
Arabian evening next semester, I’m sure you’ll
all be shimmying in anticipation for that one.
Our new Salsa class with Kenia has been very
successful and perhaps we can continue this
into the new school year too – let Andrea
know if you feel the Latin spirit inside you
calling and you want to join in this fun way to
exercise.
If you need to be a little more “chillaxed” sign
up for yoga with Faye McGregor – you’ll soon
see the world in a more flexible light and for at
least an hour the most challenge you’ll face is
whether or not you can touch your ears with
your toes (although I’m pretty sure it’s not a
pre-requisite to joining the class).
If that’s all still too much effort, then enjoy a
little me time by treating yourself to a new look
with Keri’s salon. Next semester’s sign-up
sheets are on the notice board so there’s no
excuse for a bad hair day any Saturday she’s
working – any other day you are excused for
looking like you’ve been dragged through a
hedge backwards, usually accompanied with
whatever was not appreciated for lunch by
your spawn on your clothes.
Now onto our unsung heroes...HUGE
THANKS, APPLAUSE, STANDING
OVATIONS etc go to our playgroup leaders,
who have tirelessly offered to our youngest
member’s entertainment and their carers an
outlet where they can chat and make new
friends. The club started out with playgroups
and without these grassroots we wouldn’t
have grown into the amazingly diverse club
that we are – so THANKYOU
for doing what you do for the
WAC. Our other leaders in the
Book Club, Girl’s Club and
Dad’s club nurture further what
the members keep coming back for – Mary
Ann, Alice, Nilsa, Mat and Dave – we should
name stars after you, but the budget does not
allow it, so our heartfelt thanks will have to
suffice. Not forgetting of course all the
wonderful parent representatives for the
courses and classes who make our job just
that little bit easier – we never take what you
do for granted as our jobs would be
impossible without your help. None of you
would get your bills if it wasn’t for our Club
Office Manager, Judith Winkelmann – now I
know you may not want to thank her for
dishing out the bills, but we really appreciate
her efficiency in keeping the club afloat.
Finally, (fingers getting RSI, so will draw to a
close soon, promise) to our “boss lady”, Helen
(aka Cake lady, Sushi lady, Scholastic lady,
scary lady – joke) who never gets enough
credit for all she does, and the Board. In the
five years our family have been members this
Board has truly been the best. The BBQ (for
those of you who missed it – man you missed
out) really represented what a wonderful team
you are – it’s a real privilege to work for you
and long may you reign – well until next March
anyway.
I’m exhausted and so glad that summer’s
around the corner – let’s hope there’s some
sun and warmth in the not too distant future.
See you all in the new school year.

RECIPE KERY SCHLAPFER
An idea was met with great enthusiasm, when it was
suggested to offer cooking classes for kids at the WAC.
We have a Spring vacation program running for 6-12 year
olds (full), a Mother's Day cooking class (on Saturday,
8th May so the kids can apply their new skills the
following day, with the idea that they can repeat the meals for mommy-
only few spaces left) and monthly courses starting in the new school year for
kids who are eager to learn how to make simple, yet delicious and nutritious
meals for themselves or maybe even the family! If you are interested in helping
out as of August 2010 or have ideas you'd like to share, please contact Anouk
We are always on the look out for new recipes. In an effort to spur you reader in sending us
one of your personal favorite. I hereby engages myself to cook whichever recipe is submitted
and bring it on a Wednesday afternoon to the clubroom for you to enjoy. Interested.. Send it
