Burglaries often increase during the Autumn and Winter months, when burglars take advantage of the longer nights. However, there are some simple steps that everyone can take to improve their

home security : - ·Always lock your doors and windows even when you’re at home ·Always take the key out of the lock and keep it in a safe place - do not leave keys in reach of the letterbox, a cat flap, or on view through a window. ·Make sure items such as car keys, laptops, tablets, phones and cash cannot be seen through a window. ·Do not leave power cables or charger units for laptops and tablets plugged in and on show. ·If you are out, try to make your home look occupied by using a timer switch to control lights. ·Make sure Euro cylinder locks have achieved - TS 007 (3 star rating) or Sold Secure Diamond Standard for lock cylinders (SS312). ·If you have a burglar alarm always remember to switch it on when you leave the house or when you go to bed. ·Why not start a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in your area?

Chairman’s Piece

Having served on the Parish Council since 2011, I have recently been elected as Chair. My first aim will be to bring the Parish Council up to full strength. I am pleased to confirm, that the Parish Council co-opted three new members onto Council at its recent meeting. Sarah Garner and David Senior will serve the Haworth Ward, whilst Sarah Cotton takes up the vacancy in Stanbury. I would like to welcome all three onto Council and look forward to working closely with them. This still leaves one vacancy for the Haworth Ward and we would be very pleased to hear from anyone who feels they could contribute to the work of the Parish Council. If you are interested, please contact our Clerk, Lisa Balderstone in the first instance. Things continue to be busy for the Parish Council with lots going on in the area. We have recently been lobbying Bradford MDC over the proposal to remove the first 30 minutes free parking at the Gas Street Car Park in Haworth. We are really hopeful that Bradford will overturn this proposal, as we believe this would have detrimental effect on local businesses. Illegal parking on Mill Hey and Station Road is already an issue of concern to us. Parish Councillors Peter Clarke and David Mahon are working hard on ensuring that the Environment Agency and Bradford Council remain conscious of the flood risks within the area and are pressing them to take preventative action to avoid a repeat of last year’s Boxing Day floods. Plans have recently been resubmitted for the proposed Bridgehouse Mills Development. This is a complex matter and Councillor David Mahon is leading on collating our response to this application. The Parish Council was heavily involved in wreath laying ceremonies across all three villages. The names of all of the men who fell in 1916 [16 from Haworth, 1 from Stanbury and 9 from Lees, Cross Roads and Bocking] were read out at these services. Many thanks to Andy Wade of the Men of Worth Project for his research and time taken collating this information. We were delighted to see increased community involvement in the wreath laying ceremony at Stanbury. Thanks must go to Stanbury Village School, who for the first time arranged for two local children to lay the wreath on the community’s behalf. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our readers, a very Merry Christmas and peaceful and prosperous new year.

Haworth Village Hall has a very mixed

history. Many residents will know it as Haworth First School, others still will think of it as “The Community Centre” and, sadly, many will regard it as a building going to waste at the edge of the park. But nothing could be further from the truth; in fact, the building is going from strength-to-strength. Supported by a small committee of dedicated volunteers the building, now renamed Haworth Village Hall, has been taken on as a community asset by the parish council and is on the brink of becoming a charity in its own right. While it needs lots of work, love and support the building provides one of the largest social spaces in the area and, with a newly equipped bar and stage, is fast becoming a venue of choice. Jonathan Olsson, who chairs the group, says that with the right support from the community the building could become a real feature: “We’ve got a building that means so much to so many local people, but to keep it going we need to bring in the money to repair and maintain it. Centre users have been great in their support and this means we’re now providing a venue for big events like Haworth Steampunk Weekend. But events like that take staffing and what we really need now are volunteers. “So much of Haworth and the Worth Valley has changed recently and some really important venues have been lost. This venue has kept going because of the determination of a very small group of volunteers, but we need many more if we’re going to make it work longer term. People can be involved occasionally, regularly, as handymen, builders, administrators...there are opportunities for everyone.” He added that it wasn’t just volunteers that made the building work, but local users: “How many villages the size of Haworth have a space with a fully equipped bar, large stage and meeting rooms? What’s more, if people start using the main hall (which can be hired for as little as £50 on some occasions), we can start developing the other rooms to make a village hall that is suitable for everyone.” Anyone wanting to use the hall should call Haworth Contact Point on 01535 644001 or email [email protected]
