Sunday Night Live – A Vision for…This program is a study concerning the “vision” for the La Grange First Church Kids & Student ministry. The theme text is Acts 8:26-40. In this text one learns how the Ethiopian was learning about God. He grew in his faith and was baptized as Phillip was there to serve him in his time of need. This is our heart for all our kids & students that they would learn about God, grow with God, and serve God. Tonight concludes this study.

Bible Study – The Great Discourse on the EndWe began on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 a new Bible Study entitled: “The Great Discourse on the End.” The study is based upon Matthew 24 and 25, Mark 13, and Luke 21. This discourse was delivered after Jesus had left the Temple for the last time. It was about the Destruction of Jerusalem, His Coming, and the End of the World. When understanding the second coming of Christ, one should first understand what Christ said. Knowing what Christ said should serve as a foundation to the understanding of this great doctrine. Everyone is encouraged to attend this Bible Study.________________________________________________________________

MESSAGE FROM GOD’S WORD Pastor“Servant of the Church” I Timothy 3:8-13

HYMN OF INVITATION AND COMMITMENTThe altar of the Lord is always open at La Grange First Church for those who desire to receive Christ as Savior, rededicate their lives, pray, or transfer their church membership. Our prayer is that you follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit in your life.

“I Will Serve Thee” (sing twice)I will serve Thee because I love Thee You have given life to me I was nothing before You found me You have given life to me Heartaches broken pieces Ruined lives are why You died on Calv'ry Your touch was what I longed for You have given life to me. (First Church # 2376035, CCLI # 14040)

RESPONSIVE READING Led by Joshua HobgoodThere are different gifts,

But it is the same Spirit who gives them. There are different ways of serving God,

But is the same Lord who is served.God works through different people in different ways,

But it is the same God who achieves His purpose through them all.

Each one is given a gift by the Spirit,To use it for the common good.

Together we are the body of Christ,And individually members of Him.

Though we have different gifts, together we are a ministry of reconciliation led by the risen Christ.

We work and pray to make his church useful in the world, and we call men and women to faith, so that, in the end, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Within our common ministry, some members are chosen for particular work as ministers of the word or deacons.

In ordination, we recognize these special ministries,

remembering that Jesus said: “Whoever among you wants to be great must become the servant of all, and if he wants to be first among you, he must be the slave of all men!

Just as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life to set others free.”

The Diaconate of the ChurchClifton Harrison, Chairman

Honorary DeaconN. C. Holmes

The office of Deacon and Deaconess is a title since apostolic times. It is one of the major orders of ministers in the church. The word deacon itself means "servant" or "minister," and any service rendered was known as deaconing.

I Timothy 3:8-13 is the only reference in the scriptures that clearly speaks to the office of Deacon. Acts 6:1-7 can be seen as laying the foundation for this office.

Without doubt, the church's diaconate was developed in response to specific needs within the corporate life of the church itself. But its inspiration was no less the example of Christ himself, who "came not be served but to serve" (Mark 10:24 and parallels). The idea of service and serving, with particular illustration from service at tables, underlies all of Jesus' teaching about his own ministry and that of his disciples after him (cf. Matt. 25:44; Luke 12:37; John 12:26; and esp. Matt. 20:26-28; 23:11; Mark 9:35; 10:43; Luke 22:26-27). In this sense, the diaconate is the foundation of all ministry in the church (The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible, Vol. I, page 786).

What are the duties of a Deacon/Deaconess? If you consider Acts 6:1-7 to be the beginning of this office their duty was to take care of the physical needs of the Hellenists widows. Their needs were being neglected. The duties and meaning of this office has changed through the years.

In the early church we learn that the duties were as follows: To serve at the Lord's Table, to read the gospel to the assembly at the Lord's Table, to seek out and visit the sick, to visit the poor and indigent, especially widows and orphans and prisoners, and to inform the bishop of their needs, and carry to them the alms of the church. The Deaconess was to assist at the baptism of women, to assist in the anointing of women, to go into the houses of the heathen where there are believing women, and to visit those who are sick, and to minister to them in that of which they have need, and to bathe those who have begun to recover from sickness. (The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible, Vol. I, page 786).

In the Original Free Will Baptist Church the duties of deacons are as follows: To serve at the Lord's table, to distribute of the bounty of the church among its needy members, to visit the sick, to assist the pastor in attending to and carrying

out the worship and outreach program of the church in a Godly manner, to cooperate with the pastor in seeing that efficient Scriptural discipline and programs are maintained, and to see that the worship and service programs are carried out in the absence of the pastor. Should a deacon transfer his church membership, his office shall thereby terminate (The Articles of Faith and Principles of Church Government for Original Free Will Baptists, pages 69-70).
