What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP)

congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope—proclaiming God’s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith, and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness.

If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You’re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multiple-occupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Connect Center located next to Sources of Hope.

Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore.

Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope, United Church of Christ!

It might seem a little strange to us to read the Scripture today as Jesus likens himself to a good shepherd. For those of us who have never been to the countryside, or experienced the relationship between sheep and a shepherd, it is hard for us to image what on earth Jesus was on about! However, sheep and shepherds were commonly known and understood by those who lived in the time of Jesus and these images, or metaphors, were used in the Hebrew text before Jesus. David, the psalmist, was a shepherd and he uses his experience to describe his relationship with God. For instance, in Psalm 23 he says that “God is my shepherd”.

Sheep learn to trust and follow their shepherd and a shepherd keeps watch for predators who might come to steal or kill.Jesus said, “I AM the good shepherd” which indicates that there are also bad shepherds! A good shepherd wants to provide safety, pasture, food and water. Jesus wants us to be assured that God, the great I AM, is good and has our best interests at heart. As the good Shepherd, Jesus is prophetically speaking to those disciples that he would ultimately lay down his life for the people, just as good shepherds lays down their life for their sheep. That’s how deeply God wants to know us and be in relationship with us.Trust is not easy in our world today, a world that is plagued by mistrust and broken relationships. It is something that has to be earned and handled carefully. For those of us who are called into relationship with God, God demonstrates that we can trust and rely on God and, as we deepen our experience, so we are able to both trust and lean into the voice of God in our lives.Today we come to experience God as the “Good Shepherd.” I do hope that you will journey with me, both on Sundays and through our small groups, to re-discover and deepen your personal experience of “I AM” as we explore “Who is Jesus?” together.Blessings,

The Reverend Dr. Neil G Cazares-ThomasSenior Pastor

THE WORD MODERN LESSON posted by Mother Clanger on Reflectionary.org

How do the sheep know the shepherd? Do they sit down with charts, like WWII airplane spotters, memorizing the silhouettes of shepherds and hired hands, so that they can tell one from the other? No. The sheep know the shepherd because the shepherd is always there: there in the green pastures, there beside the still waters – and also there in the dark valley. In the dark valley I can become overwhelmed with all the dangers – both the real and imagined. I am busy watching out for lurking beasts to bite me, or tangled roots to trip me, or thorny bushes to snag me, and I can forget that I’m not there alone. “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” We’re not saying the evil has gone, or that it’s not real – heaven knows we see plenty in the world – but our shepherd walks with us – walks with me – through it. And sometimes I just need to remind myself of that.

**GOSPEL LESSON John 10: 11-15 NRSV, alt.

One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. All: Glory to you, O God.

Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd would die for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away – and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as God knows me and I know God. And I lay down my life for the sheep.”

One: This is the Gospel of Hope. All: Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit.

THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY Lead Me, Lord Words and Music by Wayne and Elizabeth Goodine.; arr. Carol Cymbala

Donna Jones, soloist Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra

CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION INVITATION TO THE TABLE One: The Gospel writers tell of our risen Savior, who at table with two of the disciples took bread and

blessed and broke it and gave it to them. Their eyes were opened and they recognized the risen Christ in the breaking of the bread.

All: In company with all believers in every time and beyond time, we come to this table to know the risen Christ in the breaking of the bread.

CONSECRATION OF THE ELEMENTS One: On the night you were betrayed you took the bread; after giving thanks you broke it and said:

“This is my body, broken for you, and as you eat it remember me.” All: “This is my body, broken for you, and as you eat it remember me.”

One: On the night you were betrayed you held the cup; after giving thanks you lifted it up. “This is my life poured out for you, and as you drink it remember me.”

All: “This is my life poured out for you, and as you drink it remember me.”

One: So we thank you for the cup and for the bread; for we see the life you gave and the blood you shed.

All: And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your body, you shed your blood. And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your Spirit to live in us.

And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your body, you shed your blood. And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your Spirit to live in us.

DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS

TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus’ name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God’s feast for all peoples. We don’t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers’ direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup of non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion.

Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself—take a wafer and dip it in the juice—in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server.

MUSIC DURING COMMUNION

You Are the Way You are the way; to you alone from sin and death we flee;

all those who search for God, you find and by your grace set free.

You are the truth; your word alone true wisdom can impart; you only can inform the mind and purify the heart.

You are the life; the rending tomb proclaims your conqu’ring arm; and those who put their trust in you not death nor hell shall harm.

You are the way, the truth, the life; grant us that way to know, that truth to keep, that life to win, whose joys eternal flow.

Jesus at the Center of It All Jesus at the center of it all. Jesus at the center of it all.

From beginning to the end it will always be. It’s always been you, Jesus, Jesus.

And nothing else matters. Nothing in this world will do. Jesus, you’re the center. Everything revolves around you, Jesus, you.

Jesus be the center of my life. Jesus be the center of my life. From beginning to the end it will always be.

It’s always been you, Jesus, Jesus. And nothing else matters. Nothing in this world will do.

Jesus, you’re the center. Everything revolves around you, Jesus, you. From my heart to the heavens, Jesus, be the center.

It’s all about you. Yes, it’s all about you. Jesus.

The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her

mother in Grafton, West Virginia. She then began a campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s. Jarvis’ holiday was adopted by other countries and it is now celebrated all over the world. In this tradition, each person offers a gift, card, or remembrance to their mother, grandmothers, and/or maternal figures. In the Roman Catholic Church, the holiday is strongly associated with revering the Virgin Mary. In some Catholic homes, families have a special shrine devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In many Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, a special prayer service is held in honor of the Theotokos Virgin Mary.

In Hindu tradition Mother’s Day is called “Mata Tirtha Aunshi” or “Mother Pilgrimage fortnight”, and is celebrated in countries

with a Hindu population, especially in Nepal. The holiday is observed on the new moon day in the month of Baisakh, i.e., April/May. This celebration is based on Hindu religion and it pre-dates the creation of the US-inspired celebration by at least a few centuries.

The Jewish population celebrates Mother’s Day on Shevat 30 of the Jewish calendar, which falls between 30 January and

1 March. The celebration was set as the same date that Henrietta Szold died. Henrietta had no biological children, but her organization Youth Aliyah rescued many Jewish children from Nazi Germany and provided for them. She also championed children’s rights. Szold is considered the “mother” of all those children, and that is why her annual remembrance day was set as Mother’s Day. The holiday has evolved over time, becoming a celebration of mutual love inside the family, called Family Day .(yom hamishpacha ,החפשמה םוי)

This is a series of articles prepared by the Music and Worship Team to give insight and background into musical elements of our services.

WORSHIP NOTES

Our Anthem this morning is Bobby McFerrin’s setting of the words of Psalm 23. McFerrin is most associated

with the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” and is an improvisational jazz vocal phenomenon and an orchestral conductor. When speaking of his setting of Psalm 23, McFerrin said, “The 23rd Psalm is dedicated to my mother. She was the driving force in my religious and spiritual education, and I have so many memories of her singing in church. But I wrote it because I’d been reading the Bible one morning, and I was thinking about God’s unconditional love, about how we crave it but have so much trouble believing we can trust it, and how we can’t fully understand it. And then I left my reading and spent time with my wife and our children. Watching her with them, the way she loved them, I realized one of the ways we’re shown a glimpse of how God loves us is through our mothers. They cherish our spirits, they demand that we become our best selves, and they take care of us.” On this Mother’s Day, the Cathedral of Hope Sanctuary Choir shares McFerrin’s a cappella setting of Psalm 23, which uses feminine language, as our Anthem to all mothers and our Mothering God.

Dinners and parties can be held from the end of April through the end of August. Where do the dinner events happen? In private homes, restaurants and bars, even local parks. Whatever the venue, they are always fun. Guests include CoH members, but also friends from your non-CoH circle of friends. What a great way to share what CoH is all about!

Cathedral of Hope will be an active participant at 2019 Dallas Pride at Fair Park—and we’re looking for some volunteers to help!

We need some Cathedral of Hope Ambassadors to help spread the word about Cathedral of Hope at our booth at the

Miller Lite Music Festival Dallas Fair ParkSaturday, June 1, 2019 (11:00 am – 10:00 pm).

Our goal is to make the community more aware of who Cathedral of Hope is and the many ways we are working within the community to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion.

Ambassadors should be knowledgeable about CoH, comfortable engaging in conversation and have an enthusiastic personality at our indoor booth location.

Ambassadors will staff the CoH booth in shifts from 10:30 am – 1:00 pm; 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm; 3:30 pm – 5:00

pm; 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm and 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm.

Cathedral of Hope will cover the $10 entry fee for our festival volunteers, but volunteers are responsible for parking and transportation fees. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Anita Haddy ([email protected]).

While Cathedral of Hope will not be participating this year with an entry at the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade on Sunday, June 2, 2019 due to cost and venue restrictions, Dallas Hope Charities, through the donation of one of its board members, will be participating with a parade float entry.

Members of the Cathedral of Hope congregation have been invited and are encouraged to walk with Dallas Hope Charities to show our support of the great work they do within our community. For more information please contact Bill Martin ([email protected]).

Volunteer of the Month for MayParking Spot Drawing Winner

At Cathedral of Hope, we think our volunteers are kind of a big deal, and because of that, we decided that honoring our volunteers once a year wasn’t enough. So, the Volunteer of the Month reserved parking spot drawing was born.

Congratulations to the May Volunteer of the Month!

Johann HuebschmannUsher, Young Adult Leadership Team, Taste of Hope

Who will be next? Maybe you! Active volunteers (active is defined as we have a record of your current volunteer hours in the database) can enter the drawing by completing an entry form that is available at the drop box located on the wall to the right of the inside glass doors. Only one entry per person per month please, however, you may enter every month that you are an active volunteer.

Monthly drawings are on the first business day of each month. The winner will be notified after each drawing. Please PRINT legibly so we can read your name.

Contact Anita at [email protected] with any questions you may have.
