LENTEN REGULATIONS

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of both fast and abstinence from meat. There is a limit of one full meal and two lesser meals on these days for all who have completed their 18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year.

All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat for those who are 14 years of age and older.

Weekdays of Lent – There is no obligation to fast. However, voluntary acts of self-denial are recommended.

Easter duty – All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, from the first Sunday of Lent (March 1) to Trinity Sunday (June 7), unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year. After having attained the age of discretion, each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be Fridays in Lent at 12:45 p.m. (with grades K-3), 1:30 p.m. (with grades 4-8) and at 7:00 p.m. (There will be no 7:00 p.m. Stations on February 28 or March 6 due to First Friday Mass; there will only be 1:30 p.m. Stations on March 27 due to Spring Break and the Holy Hour of Reparation.)

NEW TO THE PARISH? Please sign up for a Parish Registration Session so that we can meet you and tell you more about our Parish family! To register for a session, please visit http://www.stmatthew.net/new-parishioners.

LENT IS A TIME TO RETURN – This Lent, we invite the parish to reflect on these words from the prophet Joel: "Return to the Lord, your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting in punishment." Lent is the perfect time for people to return to the Church in preparation to meet the Risen Christ at Easter. We are here to welcome everyone, no matter where they are in the faith journey. Starting on Ash Wednesday, invitations to come home will be available in the Gathering Space. Please take one (or more) and invite family and friends who have been away to join you in celebrating Jesus’ triumph over sin and death. We will also have small handouts available with some suggestions for how to talk to people about returning to the Church. We hope to provide additional information in the future that can help us learn how to have these difficult conversations, and, most importantly, how to listen. For more information, please contact Pat Martin at [email protected].

LENTEN REFLECTION BOOKS AVAILABLE – We hope this Lent will be a spiritually fruitful time for everyone, and we are happy to offer Lenten reflection books as a gift to our parishioners. Books will be available in the Gathering Space starting this weekend and are the perfect size to keep in your pocket, purse, or car. Please take one and use it to build a regular prayer life as we enter into the mystery of Christ's passion, death, and resurrection.

STEWARDSHIP AT ST. MATTHEW – If you are currently giving through our ECO (electronic contribution option) automatic withdrawals, we encourage you to learn more about our Online Giving system. Over the next few months, we will be phasing out our ECO and asking anyone who wants to give through automatic withdrawal to set up an Online Giving account instead. For more information, see our website: www.stmatthew.net/giving or email us at [email protected]. Thank you for supporting our efforts to worship, serve, and evangelize!

MAGNIFICAT – The time is now to renew or begin a subscription to the Magnificat for June 2020 through May 2021. The Magnificat is a monthly publication that provides daily Mass readings, morning and evening prayers, a daily meditation and stories and lessons about the saints. VISITING MINISTRY – Saint Matthew Parish has numerous care facilities for the elderly within its boundaries. In these care centers as well as in private homes, there are numerous parishioners who could enjoy a visitor every once in a while. When I go to visit or to take Communion, these elderly are so appreciative. Please consider becoming a part of our Visiting Ministry and sharing a half hour of your time each week or every other week with someone who is lonely. If you are interested, please contact Carol Ann Lombardi at 614-478-4328 or [email protected].

PARISH NURSERY – We are happy to offer a nursery for young children during the 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Masses on Sundays, but we are unable to offer nursery care during the other weekend Masses due to lack of available volunteers. The safety of our children is our top priority, so we thank you for understanding. If you have any questions about the nursery, please contact Maria Ohalek at [email protected].

USHERS NEEDED! St. Matthew is in need of more ushers for certain Masses. Our priests rely heavily on the ushers to make all parishioners and visitors feel welcome, to administer the collection and also pitch in when extra duties are necessary. It is time for our community to embrace the gifts we’ve been given and we can’t wait to see how God provides for these specific needs. Please contact the Parish or 614-471-0212 for more information or to contribute.

FAMILY PHOTOS REQUESTED – We are working to update our records with photos of our parishioners so that our priests and staff will be able learn everyone's names more easily, and we would appreciate it if you could send us a family photo to [email protected] so that we can update our records. Please include the names of everyone in the photo. We don't care if it's a formal portrait we'll take anything that shows your lovely faces! Thank you!

PLEASE NOTIFY THE PARISH OFFICE – To fulfill our Spiritual Work of Mercy to pray for the dead, we encourage parishioners to notify the Parish Office of the death of a loved one. Names and death dates are compiled, either as the funerals are held here or as parishioners inform us of a loved one’s death. All the deceased are remembered by name at the annual Mass of Remembrance, held on All Souls’ Day, November 2.

IF A FAMILY MEMBER IS SICK OR SERIOUSLY ILL, consider contacting the Parish Office at 614-471-0212 for one of the priests to administer the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist and the Anointing of the Sick. Due to HIPAA privacy laws, hospitals no longer notify church offices when parishioners are admitted. As well, in the case of serious illness, families are encouraged to contact us early allowing the priest and patient to talk about any spiritual needs they may have including receiving the Sacrament of Penance.

WE WELCOME INTO OUR FAMILY OF FAITH the following children who were baptized on Sunday, February 16: Elizabeth Anne Cheuvront & Evan Dean Cheuvront.

WE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED: Najette Delaney, wife of Kevin Delaney.

BISHOP ROBERT BARRON’SPIVOTAL PLAYERS

Bishop Fulton J. Sheen and Flannery O'Connor

*Notice the change of dates!*

ARE COMING TO ST. MATTHEW!(Free event)

CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization.

Bishop Fulton J. SheenThe Communicator

Long before the Internet and social media, Fulton Sheen pioneered Catholic evangelization through the media. At a time when most

preachers spoke only from pulpits, Sheen used electronic media as a means to reach far beyond the parish walls. His innovative radio and television programs, beamed out to believers and skeptics alike, reached upwards of 30 million people per week. Sheen had a gift for spreading the faith clearly and persuasively, and he paved the path for today's media evangelists.

Flannery O'ConnorThe Storyteller

Flannery O'Connor's influence on contemporary culture, particularly literature and film, is profound. Her novels and short stories have been described as

shocking, convoluted, funny, and violent, and they are filled with unforgettably strange characters. But they are also, from beginning to end, haunted by Christ. O'Connor radically changes our idea of what religious fiction can be. Her startling prose awakens us to sin and, consequently, to the need for salvation.Join Bishop Barron as he traces the lives and contributions of these two pivotal players.

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 23, 2020

THE SUNDAY MASS READINGS EXPLAINED: LOVE YOUR ENEMIES, BE PERFECT!What were the Jews thinking about when they heard Jesus preach? How does any of this relate to the Old Testament? What means do we use to interpret the Scriptures? Does everyone just get to decide the meaning on their own? Dr. Brant Pitre has the answers to these questions. Spend one hour each week at St. Matthew with Dr. Pitre (on video) either on Thursday mornings at 9:15 a.m. or Sunday mornings after the 10:00 a.m. Mass in our small groups, and you will be amazed at the progress you will make in your knowledge of the Bible. To view a portion of the video for this week, go to https://catholicproductions.com/blogs/mass-readings-explained-year-a.Here is what you missed from this week’s 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time session:

Notable Quote:“But Jesus is saying the new law that I'm giving goes way beyond that. It actually enjoins excessive generosity in the face of evil, in the face of harm, in the face of injury. Let’s see what that means. Jesus says “but I say to you, do not resist one who is evil.” Now that's the problematic verse that usually throws people off. Is Jesus giving license here to abuse? Is He trying to call His disciples to be doormats to be walked all over by everyone? It is understandable that it might sound that way, unless you put the verse in context. In other words, if you want to know what an open-ended saying like that means, you should look at the examples that Jesus gives. So, He doesn't go on to say “if your husband is beating you, let him keep beating you.” That's not the image that He gives there.Let's look at each one of the examples that He gives. The first image. He says this, “if someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.” What does this mean, to strike on the right cheek? Well if you go back to the book of Job 16:10 or the book of Lamentations 3:30, you will see that the imagery of striking someone on the right cheek is like the gravest form of insult you can give someone. It's a kind of public humiliation of another person. So what Jesus is saying here is that if someone insults you or humiliates you, how do you respond to that? You give them the other cheek as well. So, it's a kind of totally unexpected and radical response to being insulted by another person. You’ll see this is also another example of – we’ve seen this before in the Sermon on the Mount – hyperbole, where Jesus is exaggerating in order to make a point. Stay with me and you'll see what I mean.”

Gain a much deeper understanding of ALL THREE Mass readings by video presenter, Dr. Brant Pitre, a Professor of Scripture at The Augustine Institute, with the Sunday Mass Readings Explained sessions. You will thoroughly enjoy his commentary and get more out of hearing the readings and the homilies than ever before. We have 2 sessions each week for your convenience (see below for more details).Cost: FREE – All materials are provided. BEWARE OF PHONY EMAILS AND TEXTS – During the past few weeks, there have again been numerous phony emails sent to unsuspecting persons (clergy, teachers, parishioners, others) from alleged priests of the Diocese requesting funds to purchase various gift cards for alleged charitable and pastoral reasons. Please be aware that there is a new scam using text messages to convey similar requests. If you receive any kind of communication, please contact the person directly to verify the authenticity of the solicitation or, at least to notify the person that a scam is underway using their identity. Thank you.

PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, ongoing initiatives and enhancements.Last week was a short week for the school (Presidents’ Day) giving the Facilities Team an opportunity to address some minor school plumbing issues, install a classroom smartboard projector and work on the parish kitchen in the school cafeteria. The Knights are revising their processes and expanding the menu to take full advantage of our new fryers and ovens during the Lenten Fish Frys. Our artist continues work on the Sanctuary murals and he has been adding detail to the angel paintings as well. The upper latticework paintings are now in process and our Nativity will be moved to his studio where the long process of restoration can begin. The Nativity restoration is estimated to cost close to $10,000.00 for the fourteen statues. Similar to our Stations of the Cross restoration, there is extensive reconstruction and sculpting required prior to painting. When they are finished, they will resemble the finish on the Stations - true pieces of art. If you would like to contribute to this project, simply mark your check or envelope to be directed to the Nativity. Your support is greatly appreciated. We mentioned last week that work had started on tightening the kneeler pads. The work has proven to be much more time consuming than we originally thought. The process will continue over the next couple of weeks. We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected].
