IN OUR PARISH
Friends,
As you may know, the priests of the diocese will gather this week for our Convocation. I realize the sacrifice this entails for all the people in our parishes. Thank you for your understanding. Would you be so kind as to remember us in prayer this week as we gather in prayer, reflection, collaboration and building each other up in the service of the Gospel? Your prayers always sustain us and so I turn to you in this special time. Strengthening the bonds of our communion as priests, we seek to serve you better that we might all be brought closer to the Lord.
Sincerely in Christ, Bishop Brennan
Please note: The Serra Clubs of Columbus have organized a prayer vigil so our priests and our bishop will be covered in prayer for the entire duration of the convocation. Would you sign up to keep vigil in front of a tabernacle for an hour or more during this time? Follow this link to sign up for as many prayer slots as you'd like: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0D48ACAF2AA2FA7-pray.
Dear St. Matthew Parishioners,
I share with bittersweet emotion that my last professional day at St. Matthew is October 4 and after that I will begin work as the Event Coordinator for the Office of Development and Planning with the Diocese of Columbus.
In my six years of ministry work here at St. Matthew, I have learned more about the love of Jesus Christ than I could ever imagine. I will miss greatly my daily interactions with staff and parishioners and look forward to worshipping with you on the weekends. Please keep me and all of our staff in your prayers during this time of transition. Thank you for your collaboration, dedication, and the countless ways you have supported my work here.
In Christ, Jenna Zins, Staff & Mission Manager
PLEASE NOTE: NO DAILY MASSES TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3 – Please note that there will be no 6:30 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. daily mass October 1-3 due to the Priest Convocation. Liturgy of the Hours will be said at those times instead.
ST. MATTHEW CHURCH GAHANNA, OHIO
LEARN THE PLOT OF SCRIPTURE…IN AN HOUR!
One of the most significant losses in the modern era is that the biblical narrative is no longer in the hearts and minds of most people. Scripture is the history of the human family, told in story form by God Himself. He tells us how and why we were made and why, as well as what happened to make things the way they are today. Why do we experience infinite longing though we live in a finite world? Why do we struggle with sin? How can we be rescued from sin and death? How can we find true satisfaction? The biblical narrative answers all these questions and more.God, like any good father, tells us our story and asks us to pass it on to our own children. To know our story is to understand ourselves in relation to God, the world, and others. Although it has been called “the greatest story ever told,” most people no longer know the details of the story. As a result, they are detached from the reality the story mediates. Many are adrift in a world of little meaning—or competing “meanings”—with no way to sort it all out. They have few answers to the most basic questions about the meaning of life, the role and meaning of suffering, our ultimate destiny, and so forth. Without the story, life loses its meaning. It’s time to rediscover the story of salvation, your salvation through Jesus Christ.Join us for this FREE presentation on• Sunday, October 13 after the 8:00 a.m. Mass
(9:00-10:00 a.m.)• Meet in the St. Raphael Room• Refreshments will be provided• Families are welcome!

ONLINE GIVING NOW AVAILABLE - We are excited to announce that we are now able to accept weekly offertory and special envelope donations, in addition to Charitable Works donations, through our new online giving system! We are grateful for the ongoing support of our mission and ministry from St. Matthew Parishioners, and we are pleased to be able to offer this user-friendly system, which allows individuals to control all aspects of how and when they give. For detailed information about how to take advantage of online giving, please see our website: www.stmatthew.net/giving.
BOOK OF THE DECEASED – Throughout October we remember loved ones who have died. You are invited to write the names of your loved ones in the Remembrance Book, located in the Gathering Space in the Church and they will be remembered on the Feast of All Souls on Saturday, November 2 at 8:30 a.m.
VISITING MINISTRY – Saint Matthew Parish has numerous care facilities for the elderly within its boundaries. In these care centers as well as in private homes, there are numerous parishioners who could enjoy a visitor every once in a while. When I go to visit or to take Communion, these elderly are so appreciative. Please consider becoming a part of our Visiting Ministry and sharing a half hour of your time each week or every other week with someone who is lonely. If you are interested, please contact Carol Ann Lombardi at 614-478-4328 or [email protected].
CALL TO PRAYER FOR OUR NATION – We can help our country turn back to God through prayer. It can change hearts, our families, our communities and the whole world. We are joining the nationwide prayer campaign, Rosary Coast to Coast, to pray simultaneously across the country on Sunday, October 13 at 4:00 p.m. This date is also the 102nd year anniversary of the Fatima Miracle of the Sun. We will pray at the Mary Garden. Everyone is welcome. For more information, please visit RosaryCoastToCoast.com
IN-HOME EMHC NEEDED – We are in need of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to minister to the homebound on Sundays. Recently, two assisted living facilities have opened in our parish area, which has put a strain on our existing InHome EMHC, requiring the need for additional EMHC. If interested or want to learn more, contact Max Maksimoski at [email protected].
WORSHIP + SERVE + EVANGELIZE: 60 YEARS OF SPREADING THE GOSPEL PROGRAM – Thank you to all parishioners who have completed and submitted your Commitment Card to the church. For those parishioners who have not yet had the opportunity to submit their card, a letter will be mailed to you portant that all parishioners complete a Commitment Card as we will be mailing out a Summary Report of the program and need all commitments accounted for in this report. If you have any questions, please contact the Church Office. We also encourage all parishioners to consider our electronic giving method and to setup your reoccurring offertory gifts electronically. To set up Online Giving, simply go to www.stmatthew.net/giving.

Romans:The Gospel of
Salvation(8 sessions)
Paul’s letter to the Romans has been at the center of reflection, conversion, and controversy from the very beginning. Romans: The Gospel of Salvation provides an authentically Catholic, comprehensive, and simple way to understand the overarching theme of Romans – salvation.Romans: The Gospel of Salvation explores the ways in which Jesus is the fulfillment of Israel’s prophecies, which leads to the universal, “Catholic” family of God.

CAN YOU NOT WATCH ONE HOUR WITH ME?Over 100 Benefits of Eucharistic Adoration: Over 100 Benefits of Eucharistic Adoration: #107: "Know also that you will probably gain more by praying fifteen minutes before the Blessed Sacrament than by all the other spiritual
exercises of the day. True, Our Lord hears our prayers anywhere, for He has made the promise, “Ask, and you shall receive,” but He has revealed to His servants that those who visit Him in the Blessed Sacrament will obtain a more abundant measure of grace. (St. Alphonsus Liguori)

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 29, 2019
PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, on-going initiatives, and enhancements. We would like to thank all who attended the Parish’s 60th Anniversary celebration last Saturday with Bishop Brennan. There was a great turnout for an enjoyable evening of fellowship and wonderful food. A special thanks to those who helped to make it happen and those who stayed behind to help clean up and put away tables and chairs. As a reminder, the life size marble angels in the Gathering Space are there temporarily. Drawings are being made of proposed enhancements to the altar to see how they will look if placed on either side of the Tabernacle. Possible configurations include an elevated Tabernacle platform and the angels raised on bases for better visibility. The new speakers mounted near the ceiling on either side of the Altar have now replaced the large brown speakers in the front of the Sanctuary, which will be removed. We received mixed reviews last weekend, mostly positive. Adjustments will continue to be made until everyone can hear clearly. The last change will be the removal of the speakers on the front Sanctuary columns replaced with smaller more powerful speakers mounted higher, like the back-side speakers.Last week the four youngest children of our beloved deceased janitor, Agnes Akahowashema, by court order are now officially under the guardianship of Agnes’ oldest sister, Diema. They will soon depart for Sweden to live with their aunt. Ketsia, Agnes’ oldest daughter will remain in Columbus at Columbus State until it is determined if she can transfer her credit hours to a Swedish university, or stay and graduate here next year. Your support has helped make all this possible for these dear children. Thank you.We appreciate this opportunity to provide these updates and welcome suggestions for facility enhancements. Please contact George Harvey at [email protected].
NURSERY HELP NEEDED – The Parish nursery is in need of adult and student volunteers to staff the nursery during each weekend Mass. Volunteers are typically scheduled once a month and we can work around your schedule. We are currently looking for adults for the 12:00 Mass, and both 5:00 Masses. Please contact Maria Ohalek at [email protected] if you are interested in joining this ministry.
COMPUTER CYBER SECURITY FOR EVERYDAY PEOPLE Come learn how to protect yourself in the Cyber World. Fellow parishioner Allen Perk of XLN SYSTEMS, will explain, in non-computer terms, how to recognize Phishing Scams from emails and the phone. Other subjects to be discussed include "passphrases" (instead of passwords), freezing your credit, the Internet of Things – IoT, using wireless networks and banking online more safely. This free educational event will be held in the St. Anthony Room this Wednesday, October 2 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Please RSVP to [email protected].
CALL TO COME HOME – If you’ve been away from the Church, are drifting away, feel confused, hurt or angry, have questions or concerns, this is an invitation to talk with us. Please contact Pat Martin at [email protected].
THE MAIN EVENT – Plans are underway for the 23rd annual celebration of the Main Event, the festive and much anticipated silent auction dinner party held each fall for the benefit of St. Matthew School. This year our event will be held on Saturday, October 19 from 6:00-10:30 p.m. The proceeds from the Main Event support the goals of the St. Matthew Home and School Association and will directly benefit each student. If you are looking for a great way to support a worthy cause and get maximum exposure for your business in our community, please consider being a Main Event Sponsor! You could also give a shout out to your family with a Mustang Sponsorship. Sponsorship levels range from $250 to $10,000 and include advertising in many of the Main Event communications. If you are interested in any of these sponsorship opportunities or donating goods, services or cash to the event, or would like additional information about attending the event, please contact Katie Ference at 614-218-1613 or [email protected]. Any and all offerings will be gratefully accepted! Thank you!
