The Word of God in Scripture blesses us this week with a reminder of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. I know that as my faith in Christ was rejuvenated and I turned to follow God’s calling to ministry, these words in Scripture gave me strength as God’s love and grace became clear to me.

I pray that as you read and hear these words again, or for the first time, you too may experience and be rejuvenated by God’s love and grace made clear in Jesus Christ..

Gathering and Praise

ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE Sweet Hour of Prayer William Bradbury

*CALL TO WORSHIP

Have mercy upon us, O God, according to your loving kindness.According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out our transgressions.

Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew a right spirit within us.As we come to worship, let the Holy Spirit surround us and guide us.

Be present with us, Gracious Lord, in this time of worship and as we go to be your hands and feet in the world.

You have called us to be your disciples. May all we do bring glory to God!

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing No. 400

*OPENING PRAYER

O God, our Guide and Guardian, you have led us apart from the busy world into the quiet of your house. Grant us grace to worship you in Spirit and in truth, to the comfort of our souls and the upbuilding of every good purpose and holy desire. Enable us to do more perfectly the work to which you have called us, so that we may resign into your hands the tasks which you have committed to us. From this, may we worship you with our lips at this hour, and also in word and deed all the days of our lives; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word

TIME WITH YOUNG DISCIPLES Laurie Harrell(11:00 - Children, ages 2-4, may go downstairs for Extended Session.)

*GOSPEL Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30 NRSV“But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for

such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

I waited for the Lord, He inclined unto me, He heard my complaint, And heard my complaint;O bless’d are they that hope and trust in the Lord.

(11:00) Come to the Water arr. Jack Schrader

O let all who thirst, let them come to the water. And let all who have nothing, let them come to the Lord: without money, without price.

Why should you pay the price, except for the Lord?

And let all who seek, let them come to the water. And let all who have nothing, let them come to the Lord: without money, without strife.

Why should you spend your life, except for the Lord?

And let all who toil, let them come to the water. And let all who are weary, let them come to the Lord: all who labor without rest.

How can your soul find rest, except for the Lord?

And let all the poor, let them come to the water. Bring the ones who are laden, bring them all to the Lord: bring the children without might.

Easy the load and light: come to the Lord, come to the water.

New Director of Youth Ministries

It is with great pleasure that I announce that we have hired Emily Newman as our new Director of Youth Min-istries. Emily has served as our Associate Director of Youth Ministries for six years. She has been a cornerstone with our youth ministry and is universally beloved. Before coming to HB, Emily earned her BA in Psy-chology and Religious Studies at UNC-CH. Additionally, she spent eight summers at Camp Don Lee, including two years in staff leadership posi-tions. Emily’s love for HB and our youth is undeniable. The out-pouring of support for her to assume this position was amazing. We are excited to see her blossom as the leader and face of our Youth Ministry, while providing much needed continuity and stability. Emily will assume her new role on July 24.

We are in the process of forming a search team to find an out-standing Associate Director of Youth Ministry. Please continue to pray for Emily and the search team as we strive to continue a thriv-ing youth ministry. Greg Weaver, Chair of SPRC

Summertime Stewardship

The summertime offers a lifetime of fond memories for our church family members through beach vacations, worldly travel, and mis-sion trip opportunities. We prayerfully remind you to maintain your generous support to Hayes Barton UMC although you may be away some this summer. While we vacation or take a break from work, the expenses to maintain our lovely church and its ministries con-tinue without interruption. Pledge receipts historically trend down in the summer months; and your ongoing and generous support is appreciated year-round. God has blessed us with a special place to worship and carry out our mission to offer Christ, community, and compassion. Thank you for sharing your resources for the greater glory of God.
