FOCUS ON WORSHIP ADVENT WREATH: A wreath of four candles, used during the weeks of Advent. The Advent wreath,
which probably originated among early Lutherans in Germany, is a symbol of waiting and watchfulness
during the weeks of Advent. The Advent wreath is customarily placed near the Gospel side of the altar
(the left side as the congregation faces the alter). It is removed from the church at the conclusion of Advent,
prior to the Christmas celebration.
CHRISTMAS: The word “Christmas” is Old English for “The Mass of Christ.” Christmas is the celebration
of the Nativity of Our Lord, when the Word became flesh (John 1:14) through the birth of Jesus the Christ.
The celebration of the birth of Christ is preceded by the Advent season, a four-week period of preparation
for the Nativity of the Lord. In contrast to the subdued and austere mood of Advent, Christmas is
characterized by grateful praise and festive joy.
CHRISTMAS SEASON: The 12 day period celebrating the Incarnation of Christ begins December 24
(Christmas Eve) and ends on January 5 (the eve of the Epiphany of Our Lord). Christmas adornments
and decorations remain in place and Christmas hymns and carols are sung throughout this season. The
appointed color for this season is white.

Pastor Fred’s
Christmas Message
To Whom Shall We Point?
When I was in seminary I did my internship at a church out in the country of rich
farmlands. The church was built by the people with modest incomes so that when it
came time for considering stain glass windows there simply want the funds to
purchase real stained glass. So the settled for glass panels that were painted with
pastel colors depicting various biblical events.
One of the windows was of John the Baptist kneeling and pointing up to a painting of
Jesus. In many ways this scene is the culmination not only of John’s work in salvation
history but of all the prophets before him: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight
his paths’. All four of the gospels bear witness to John’s purpose and every Advent we
hear one of the gospel texts read concerning his purpose in God’s salvific plan.
But here is our problem. We are no longer waiting for a Messiah. For us it is a past
event even though we listen to all of the Advent scripture we already know what is
going to happen as we celebrate Christmas day. Add to all of that two thousand years
of world history with its wars and often sad performance of the church and we may
wonder if what we yearn for in life has any parallels in what we hear in the ancient
gospel texts.
However, as the saying goes, human nature never chances. Every generation looks for
something outside of themselves that verifies why they are born, why they even take
up time and space. To be sure the world has seen more than enough fake ‘messiahs’
who promise some sort of leadership only to be not be a disappointment or worse to
be destructive.
As such it becomes critical for all of us to ask ourselves; to whom do we point to as
the ultimate force in our lives? Whose life is it that has endured throughout the ages
that people pointed to as the fulfillment of humanities deepest longings? The whole
approach to Christmas is the opportunity for each of us to assess our lives and to ask
that critical question: to whom do I point to as the one who not only defines me here
and now, but who also points beyond my mortality to the essence of eternal love?
Blessed Christmas,
Pastor Fred

Tidings of great joy - Christmas is coming - let the singing begin!
For almost two months, choral music is heard everywhere during this time of year. It may be because my college had “choir” as it’s middle of the name (Westminster Choir College) that I never get tired of hearing Christmas music. I be-lieve Christmas carols pour out of everywhere imaginable. Imagine my surprise a few years ago, when I was walking past the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas dur-ing the holidays when I heard my favorite Bach chorale: “Wachet auf” (“Awake O, sleepers”) blaring from the outdoor speakers - right there in sin city! I don’t know if it was played ironically but I felt spiritually uplifted (and not just more awake and ready to gamble - what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…) At any rate, I hope that you enjoy the seemingly endless singing. Speaking of endless singing…
Choir Ministry: We Never Close
Choirs may be a bit like a church in miniature. Sometimes, a choir forms a sub community with an identity that is defined and enduring. Sometimes, the choir is a floating society that leads the singing whenever necessary. Sometimes, the choir is a seasonal visitor.
I believe that we are blessed at St. Luke Church to have choirs (vocal and hand-bell) and instrumentalists that are a living ministry, a ministry which enhances our prayer and helps lead us into the presence of the Holy One.
So, as we ponder the coming of Christ and hear the ceaseless singing know that the musical community at St. Luke Church will always be there – singing!

10:00am Christmas Lessons and Carols
The season of Advent began Sunday, November 27. This year we have a
slightly different devotional waiting for you in the church narthex. It tells the
story of Advent as a story of hunger. A people’s hunger for salvation, the
fleeing holy family’s hunger for safety and the world’s hunger for a new
dawn. It tells the story in a weekly format. Feel free to read each week
episode all at once or split it into small segments each day.
There is also a December calendar sheet which gives daily Bible verses for
the season of Advent. Choose your favorite or use both. May you be blessed,
enriched and challenged by these Advent resources, and may the stirrings of
the season take root within you.

St. Luke Memory Tree
Everyone is invited to prepare a white dove in memory of a loved one. The doves are available in the narthex.
Write your loved one’s name on the dove and place it into the Memory Tree basket in the Narthex. One name per dove please. The white doves will be placed on the tree
after the angels are removed. They will remain until Epiphany , Jan. 6, 2017.
A CAROLING WE WILL GO!
All kids and “kids at heart” are invited to go Christmas Caroling on Monday, December 12.
At 6:00pm we will meet at the church and carpool to Sitter-Barfoot Nursing Home near the
VA Hospital. At 6:30pm, we will do some Christmas Caroling to the residents there. Whether
you’re 5, 15, 25, 50 or above - you’ll have a great time bringing Christmas memories to the
homebound!
On Sunday, December 18, following the service, we will go Christmas Caroling at ManorCare Nursing Home.
Everyone is invited! Please come and join us as we spread the joy of the Christmas season.
And the angel said unto them, "Fear not! For, behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all
people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this
shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
Luke 2: 10-12
May the wonder of that first Christmas, the joy of God's abundant blessings,
and the peace of Jesus' presence be with you always.
With our best wishes for a joyful and Christ-centered Christmas and new year,
Tammy Rich Jo
The Angel Tree Collection for Manor Care residents
Please help us spread some Christmas cheer this year!
Each year, St. Luke partners with a local nursing home, to help give their residents gifts to lift their spirits during the Christmas season. This year we are again giving to Manor Care on Hilliard Ave. Please help us keep this time honored tradition alive with your love and generosity. To participate, please pick up an Angel from the Angel Tree located in the Narthex. Each Angel has information about items needed for one resident of Manor Care. Buy and wrap the presents requested. Then return and place your gifts underneath the Angel Tree by Sunday, December 11th. We wish to thank everyone that participates every year and thank you to our new gifters. Please contact Dana Wiggins at 475-0077 if you have any questions or if you lose your angel. Thank you for participating again this year!

Dear St. Luke Lutheran Church Members,
As we enter our Advent Journey towards Christmas - Christ's Birth, God's
gift to all of us, it is our custom to present a cash gift to our dedicated
Church Staff - Pastor Fred, Tammy Hammond (Church Administrator),
Rich Barnett (Director of Music), Jo Blandford (Christian Education &
Youth Consultant), Vickie Pyle (Nursery Attendant) and Naim Abdelshahid
(Custodian). This is one small way to show our appreciation for the ministry and
services they provide to each of us individually and as a Church Family.
Please consider placing a check or envelope marked "Staff Christmas Gift" in the
offering plate over the next three Sunday's so we can present the staff with a well-
deserved Gift from ALL of US. You can designate the gift to one or more of the staff
members or by indicating a percentage. Gifts that are not designated will be divided equally. Thank you.

The Outreach Committee
Would you like to be part of our Worship Service?
Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services, Altar Bread Bakers, Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members, Musicians and many other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy. If you are interested in serving and would like more information about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship Ministry, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Pastor Fred Marcoux or Vince Reedinger for more information. You’ll be glad you did!
Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the
Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are
used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God
and those who attend worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of
God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor
of” a special person, an anniversary, birthday,
birth, baptism or other special event. More than
one person may find a certain date important so flowers may be
given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday
service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly
from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered
to the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service
that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or
homebound members. Please sign up on the flower chart located in
the fellowship hall.
Please contact the church office or Jean Stewart if you have any
questions. Thank you.
The 2017 Flower Chart is up in the fellowship hall.
If you haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so ?
Please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or Jean Stewart at 804-276-2690 if you have any questions or would like more information.

Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study is a scripture discussion every Wednesday morning, from 10:30am - 11:30am. He will continue using a variety of study methods so we can delve into the text to discover new insights in how the words speak over the centuries and into our own time. There is no need to bring a Bible - we have plenty here to work with. Classes will continue every week at 10:30am on Wednesday mornings. Please come out and join us!!
Sunday School for all ages!
This year we have classes for preschool, elementary, confirmation, youth (middle & high
school), and Adult Forum. Pre-school thru youth will begin Sunday mornings with 15 minutes
of music with our new Director of Music, Rich Barnett - so don't be late!
Please come join us!
ADVENT ADULT FORUM SERIES - SUNDAY’S AT 9:00AM Advent Adult Forum Series: The Child in the Cradle becomes the King on the Cross
In “Because of Bethlehem”, a four-session video Bible study, Max Lucado explores how the One who made
everything chose to make himself nothing and come into our world. Jesus’ birth gives us the promise that God is
always near us, always for us, and always within us - and that we not longer need to have marks on our record.
DECEMBER 4 “Because of Bethlehem” Session 2: Worship Works Wonders
DECEMBER 11 “Because of Bethlehem” Session 3: God Guides the Wise
DECEMBER 18 “Because of Bethlehem” Session 4: Every Heart a Manger
Please join us Sundays at 9:00am for all or part of this series. The classes are led by Vince Reedinger.

St. Luke Wonderful Women
Dear St. Luke Family,
We all know the wonderful people we have at our church and the many blessings we
get from the worship and fellowship. Thanks to your generosity the teachers and
students from NMS, Enipein, Wone and Rohi do also. For five months I lived in Kitti
and worked in these elementary schools each day.
They do not share many of the worldly goods that our children do but that is about the only difference between
children. They laugh, smile and seldom complain. They enjoy learning and deserve good teaching and materials
Every little bit helps and its a joy to see the teachers divide the goodies for their kids.
On behalf of these wonderful people I sincerely thank you. I have moved into the district center for the last half
of my tour. These schools however remain first in my heart and I visit/help them whenever responsible. Thanks
again for your gifts.
John A Olson PCRV
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!!
And please......
