Is this what we want?

Scissors, scissors and hits for public education By: Sergio López

The new government has made the biggest cuts in the Spanish democracy. They have attacked aspects of our lives which seem to be untouchable. They have reduced the budget in schools and universities while they continue supporting and encouraging private education and giving money to the Catholic Church.

Why does the government want to destroy the basis of a prosperous society? Without a good education, the future for Spanish students and future workers will be stormy. These cuts include the dismissal of 2,500-3,000 teachers while the number of students is increasing.

The decrease in resources for education will have huge consequences such as:

• Loss of extra support and reinforcement • Loss of classrooms • Increase in the number of students per class • Decrease in the elective subjects • Decrease in the out-of-school activities (trips, excursions…) • Decrease in the library hours • Decrease in the hours in the computer room • Less teachers for guard

With these reductions the government plans to collect approximately 485 million euro.

!

Editorial

Page 5: Worldwide Y2

If you think these cuts are only going to occur in primary and secondary education, you are mistaken. Universities aren´t safe either, the universities will have to pay up to 10% more for their first registration from 15% to 25%. Students can expect to pay up to 540 Euros upon their first registration. If this isn´t enough the students who repeat will have to pay between 30% and 40% for the secondary registration, between 65% and 75% for the third registration and between 90% and 100% for the fourth registration.

Barcelona.

Why attack the education, the country´s future, the children´s future? When probably the money collected will be end up in a

bank or lost?

!

However, both the university and secondary students and teachers have gone to protest against rising tuition costs.

POOR ECONOMY IN SPAINBy: Pablo Millán Muñoz 2C

This year there have been a lot of cuts on education in Spain.

Parents are very worried because they think their children won’t have good public education.

We’re very affected by this. In high school there is a lack of teachers, we do not have outside activities and we have no more split lessons. When a teacher is sick we have the risk of been alone in the classroom.

Also the teachers are affected. Their salaries are decreasing and their work is increasing. They have to assist more classes.

Due to all of this, and to the economic crisis next year there will be new cuts. However, the teachers are not waiting for time to go by. They’re going on strike whenever they can, although their salaries decrease more for each strike.

Cuts in Education

More Children per Class

Dear Editor,

This year many cuts in education have been made. Teachers and students went to Madrid to protest against it. But the new government has decided to consolidate the classes and to increase the number of children per class.

School trips have been limited this year, and a lot of teachers were dismissed because of the cuts in the budget. Some teachers had to give classes in subjects they didn’t know too much. I think this is not a good way of teaching in our schools.

On May 22, teachers and students went to Madrid’s center to protest. Many students didn’t have class because the teachers were on strike. It’s time of exams, so this strike affected the students.

Poster May 22 Next year classes

The government announced that next year there will be more students per class. I think this will delay the school year, they will be distracted and they will talk more. Finally in my opinion, these cuts won’t be good for education.

Sincerely,

BEATRIZ Cuevas

Letter to the Editor

Page 8: Worldwide Y2

Dear Editor,

In the first place I would like to tell you that I am a faithful reader of your newspaper. I would like to give my opinion about Camacho´s article.

Antonio Camacho (former coach of Spain) said that in the Euro Cup of 2012, Spain is the favorite to win, although there are other important rivals like The Netherlands or Germany. Spain is the favorite team because of its players but this year maybe there will be less players than expected. Players like Puyol and Villa will be absent

In my opinion, everything that Camacho is saying is true because I think we have the best players in the world and it can be seen in our league, envied around the world. I think Germany has more possibilities to win than The Netherlands because of the results in past years.

Finally, I would like to say that Camacho could return to the Spanish league because China´s league is not very good and he can give more in our country.

Sincerely,

Adrian Yebenes Nuñez

THE TITANIC

100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE TITANIC !

By: SERGIO PARRÓN DE LA LLANA

This year, 2012, the TITANIC celebrates

its 100th anniversary. There are events, festivals, and celebrations to commemorate this anniversary and to remember what happened during the last hours of the Titanic as it sank in the cold waters of the Atlantic, 100 years ago.

HISTORY:

The Titanic was the most luxurious boat of its time and a lot of people wanted to sail on it to have a new life in the United States. However, the majority of the people, 1514, died in this catastrophic crash with an iceberg on April 14, 1912.

There is a project that consists of building a new replica of the Titanic. If this is true, the “TITANIC 2” will be finished in 2016.

There have been some films created to demonstrate what happened, before and after the crash. The most famous is “Titanic” by James Cameron, which was awarded with 11 Oscars.

In conclusion, the Titanic was the greatest boat of its time and its crash became one of the greatest marine disasters ever, taking 1500 lives. Therefore many people commemorated the 100th year anniversary.

A FANTASTIC FAIR IN SAN FERNANDO By: Silvia Pascual de la Calle

This year the fair has been very exciting. It was a fun weekend and nothing stopped the people from enjoying themselves.

The fireworks, attractions, concert, evenings with your friends... The weekend of San Fernando's fair was incredible. Although the fair was only one weekend some people arrived the weekend before

This year there was one attraction less. Some people say that it was because there was not money enough, but there are some rumours about a 15-year-old girl who had an accident and now she is in a coma.

The fireworks were amazing, a lot of people met all along the parks to watch the. They were very colourful and they made many different shapes. It took about 5 or 10 minutes. In the end, everyone was astonished by them and some people took photos and videos. When the fireworks finished, most people come back to the fair.

We could see people laughing, dancing, singing... Everyone was having fun in San Fernando's fair and enjoying the live concert of Nach and the fireworks. That weekend was unforgettable. If you didn't go to the fair, don't worry, this weekend is Coslada's fair and I'm sure it's going to be as perfect as San Fernando's.

The crisis is a problem that is affecting a lot of people in Spain and in the world. In Spain there are 4.500.920 unemployed people.

Spain has the highest rate of unemployment. Young people cannot find a job, and many have had to leave the country. Others don’t have money, and they have lost their homes and have to live on the street.

I know some cases about friends that their parents have lost their jobs and don’t have enough money to survive through the month. It is bad luck because some people live very well and others very badly.

Finally, I think that when someone is an unemployed person, they don’t find work and the young people have to survive off of their parents money.

The Crisis visits Spain

By: Olga Aldecoa

The crisis in Spain is a serious problem. Economic crisis is described as a situation in which the country experiences a sudden downturn brought on by a financial crisis. One of the biggest consequences that the crisis brought is a high number of unemployed people (4,714,122 in 2012).

In 2012 the president (Mariano Rajoy) and the government have made cuts in education and health care. They have increased the number of students per class, with less teachers. Some important strikes took place in Spain, like the 15-M, to protest these cuts. The 15-M movement started on May 15th 2011. It consists of a series of peaceful protests against the cuts on education and they try to promote a more participatory democracy. A slogan of the strike was ‘’We are not puppets in the hands of politicians and bankers’’ For example in the high school Manuel de Falla, there have been cuts that implied the reduction of 12 teachers and many strikes took place in this high school. Now, the crisis is affecting us, the students, the young people, because all these cuts on education are affecting our future. Many graduates in engineering, and architecture have migrated to other countries in search of jobs and

opportunities, mainly they have migrated to Germany. The German

Chancellor, Angela Merkel, has provided thousands of jobs for Spanish who wish to migrate to Germany, because they need to incorporate between 500,000 and 800,000 specialized employees, especially in the field of engineering and telecommunications.

Finally, many people wonder, how long will this crisis last? They length of the crisis depends on the measures taken by: The European central bank, the US federal reserve and the government of Spain. The consumers’ confidence seems to be a key piece in the recovery of the markets.

15-M movement in La Puerta del Sol, in Madrid.

So, this crisis is affecting all of us, young and elderly, making us pose these questions: what will our future hold? Will we have to migrate to find a job? Or will Spain recover completely?

Q- What was the first thing that caught your attention about Spain?

A- Honestly, I was overwhelmed by everyone talking so loudly.

Q- Why did you make the decision to come here?

A- I wanted to know how a bilingual school works because in Texas, where I live, I would like to teach Spanish. Even today there’re not bilingual schools there.

Q- What was your first important experience when you arrived?

I remember two things: I arrived late on Sunday, and on Monday I started work, so I didn´t have time to visit the city. Also it was very hard to find a flat.

Q- So, where do you live?

A- At Diego de León, I’m sharing a house with a Spanish girl.

Q- Do you miss your family?

A- Yes, but I went to Texas for Christmas and two months ago they came to visit me, so I don’t feel very far from them.

Q- Have you met anyone outside of highschool?

A-Yes,I have French, German and Spanish friends. My Spanish friends have introduced me a lot of people. I often go out with other teaching assistants.

Q- What have been the advantages of this experience?

A- I have learnt a lot of things about the Spanish culture, and B- I have met a lot of new people.

!"#$%"&#'("&)*+&",$)*-$*.&))&*I have interviewed our English teaching assistant, Paige, who has been in Madrid (Spain) since last October. She’s from Texas (United States), and she got a “Fulbright scholarship” to help children and teenagers from other countries to improve their English, while she’s practicing and learning how to work in a bilingual school.

Profile

Page 15: Worldwide Y2

Q- And what were the main problems?

A- The main one was that I don’t speak Spanish very well, so it was very difficult to do easy things like, knowing what food to buy, because here the food is different from the one in the US.

Q- Have you adapted to Spanish schedule?

A- Yes, now I lunch and I have dinner later.

Q- Hera in Spain we have a very bad habit, to talk louder to non Spanish- talking persons. Did that happened to you?

A- I didn´t notice, but I felt them get closer when they speak.

Q- Do you travel?

A- Yes, I have visited Germany, Italy, France, Morocco, Portugal… But I know TAS who have travelled a lot more, almost every weekend. I wanted to spend more time in

Madrid. With my family I visited a lot of places in Spain.

“I think this has been the best experience of my life. Now I’m more independent, and I communicate better in Spanish. My perception of Spanish people has changed for better.”

Paige’s Interview By: César Hernandez

Today we are going to interview Paige Miller. She is one of our teaching assistants from Texas (USA). She has a Fulbright scholarship.

Int: Do you think it has been a good idea to come to Spain?

Paige: Yes, I think the most important thing about my time here

is that I have improved my Spanish.

Int: Of all the Spanish traditions, which one do you like best?

Paige: my favourite Spanish tradition is being outside with my

friends drinking something.

Int: What are you going to do when you finish you studies here in Spain

Paige: I’ll go back Texas. I plan to do a master and keep studying Spanish. I want to work in bilingual education in Texas.

Int: Has it been difficult to adapt to Spanish culture?

Paige: No it was easy but it has been hard to be away from home. Also I don’t speak English here to much.

Int: What do you think about typical Spanish singers like Ramoncin?

Paige: Honestly, I don’t listen Spanish music too much.

Int: Do you like Spanish food like Paella?

Paige: Yes, I like all Spanish food and I don’t think only Spanish food is Paella. I have tried everything.

Int: Do you notice the difference in accents from Seville and Madrid?

Paige: Now, I can definitely notice the difference, but the first time studied Spanish, I only heard the Seville accents. Here in Madrid it’s easier.

Int: What was the best experience that you have had here, in Spain?

Paige: the best one was that I learned how to live alone.

Digital Twinspace

By: Alba García Lucas & Silvia Domínguez Rodríguez 2ºA

Twinspace it’s a website in which you can exchange information with people from other countries. This year, the students of 2nd year from the bilingual programme at I.E.S Manuel De Falla have been interacting with students from an English school. The main purposes of this website is to introduce ourselves in a section called Welcome to our world. They are learning English but also learning about different aspects and views of English people. They have done several activities in which all of the students have shown their opinions.

Ex: Being British/Spanish:

In this short activity, students from both schools, have made their own presentations about what they think being British/Spanish means. They have discussed aspects like food, culture, sports, behaviors, etc.

Another important element of twinspace is chating. You can talk with others in real time. You can share a public conversation or a private one. In this way, students talk and improve English in an interactive and fun way.

We have done a short interview to one of 2nd year A. from I.E.S Manuel de Falla (Coslada) Her name is Ana.

-What do you think about this new project?

-“I think that it’s a very good project where you can learn more about English culture and talk with some new people. I’m not very sure about the progresses about this project because we have been doing it for few weeks. I would like to make a kind of exchange with them next year.”

Webber in the middle of the picture very happy.

By: Javier Rojo 2A

Last Sunday there was an exciting F1´s race, which lasted for nearly two hours and the first 6 positions weren´t decided until the end. Due to its urban circuit the streets are very narrow. Consequently since the start of the race there were plenty of accidents that made the race even more interesting. Webber the Australian driver of Red Bull won the Pole position on Saturday. So he was the first in the start of the race. He had a perfect race without any mistakes and he wasn´t passed by any driver in the whole race. A curious fact of this race was that the first 6 drivers in the race were in less than 6 seconds. The distance between the first (Webber) and the 6th (Massa)

was less than 6 seconds. It was a very interesting race. It was reported in the news that this race had more than 5 million spectators. With Webber´s victory there has been a different winner in the 6 different championship races. Nobody has won two races. Due to this the championship is with a very high and even level.

he Spanish national team is facing now the most difficult challenge: winning all these matches because they are the

nowaday’s football bosses.

By: Juan Álvarez Moreno

Spain’s scrimmages were very bad, for example, they only scored 1 goal against China, and I think that a Champion would score more than 1 goal on a team like China.

The favourite teams to win are Germany, Netherlands, France and Spain. In the World Championship, these teams were in the final rounds fighting, and in the recent scrimmages they seemed very prepared and played well.

About the “Pulpo Paul” I think there will be something but with another pet because Paul died and we are waiting for something original and surprising.

The European Championship is going

to start and we hope Spain will win it.

The players that the coach has already

chosen aren’t good enough to be there.

Many people are very disappointed (like me)

and I say that Raúl should be in.

This amazing settlement is taking place

in Poland and Ukraine and it started last

Friday 8 June. In 2016 this Championship

will be held in Brazil, but Spain was also

fighting to organize it.

Anti-Smoking Law Does anti-smoking law make us really think about the importance of our health? Has anti-smoking law a clear future in Spanish culture?

By: Alba Garcia Lucas

12 million people from the Spanish population smoke so, can we consider Spain as a “smoker” country? The anti-smoking law, established in 2006, obliged public buildings to have designated spaces for smokers and non-smokers. This law was annulled after the introduction of a new one.

The new anti-smoking law was established at the beginning of 2011. The law forbids smoking in public spaces as well as public buildings such as restaurants, pubs, public transports, etc.

Year after year, the number of smokers is decreasing, but it it’s still a serious problem both for the person who inhales the second-hand smoke. After a year and a half living with this law, we can notice the different changes that this law has caused:

Negative: One of the most negative problems of this law is the economic cost because many businesses have suffered a loss in clients. Also, many restaurants have placed heaters on their terraces for clients not to get cold.

Positive: The reason why this law was introduced was for a health purpose. The main objective was to decrease the number of passive smokers and even the number of smokers. During this year and a half many smokers have reconsidered the idea of smoking and they have managed to stop doing it, probably, thanks to anti-smoking law.

But, does this new anti-smoking law have a clear future in Spanish culture?

Mariano Rajoy has reopened the old debate about anti-smoking law. The PP lider has considered a possible reform for anti-smoking law.

But Rock in Rio is not only a huge concert. Rock in Rio has a project called “For being a girl” which fights against the discrimination of small girls who live in poor countries. To solve the problem, we only have to give to these girls one year more of education, and that will increase the money that they earn up to 20%.

THE HUNGER GAMES Here’s some advice-Stay alive.

Happy Hunger Games, may the odd be ever in your favor!

By: Irene Losada

The Hunger Games, the anticipated adaptation of the best seller by the same tittle writing by Suzane Collins became the highest film earing of the year. In its opening weekend in the US, it earned more than $152 million at the cinemas. The Hunger Games is a must-see film if you want to know everything about the cinema.

The main character is Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, a young actress who won an Oscar to her performance in Winter’s Bone. However, the rest of the cast of The Hunger Games is one of the highlights, especially the love triangle that develops between Katniss, Peeta and Gale. Josh Hutcherson, a young actor known by his performances in Viaje al centro De la Tierra, Un Puente hacia Terabitia and Zatura, una aventura espacial, play the first. And Liam Hemsworth plays the second. What really caught the attention of film lovers is the rest of the cast that includes some great actors like Stanley Tucci, who plays an egocentric TV presenter; Ponald Sutherland, who takes over the role of the president of Panem: Wooday Harrelson, is the alcoholic mentor of Katniss and Peeta who won one od the editions of the Hunger Games. In addition, we also see the musician Lenny Kravitz and other familiar faces like Wes Bentley, Elizabeth Banks and Tuby Jones.

The public really liked this highly anticipated film. The reaction was really amazing but everyone agrees that the book is better.

In the MTV Movie Awards 2012, The Hunger Games won 4 awards (Best actor, best actress, best fight and best transformation) and also was nominated for the best film 2012.

This film is fascinating, imaginative and frightening.! It is a thrilling trilogy, with action and well-drawn characters. The greatest success of the movie is to bring together the essence of 1984, the intensity of ‘’La naranja mecánica’’, the fantasy of ‘’Las Crónicas de Narnia’’ and the invention of ‘’Harry Potter’’.

"#$%&'"()!Another “paranormal” science fiction film by Josh Trank in 2012!

By: Pablo Jiménez

hronicle, has become a new blockbuster in U.S. This science fiction film tries to

show how money, or in this case, how power can change people.

I think the plot was quite good; the film presents the adventures 3 teenagers from high school, Matt, Andrew and Steve. The whole film is recorded by Andrew´s video camera. The film starts when they receive telekinetic powers by chance when they were in a forest. At the begging they used them for personal gain, very careful, but, with the pass of the time, these powers made them more ambitious and Andrew started to use them for dark porpoises.

I liked a lot the transformation of the main character, Andrew and how he looses his innocence to become stronger and even a kind of evil. Andrew´s friends played also a very important role in the film, because they helped Andrew every time, even when he was a kind of evil.

I liked the film very much and although some movies critics had said that “it was another science fiction film”, I think it was very original. Also I think that the factor of

the video camera gives the film a little bit more of thriller.

In conclusion, I would recommend this film to all the people who likes going to the cinema, especially to teenagers and to people who likes thriller and science fiction films. I don’t mean that all of you would enjoy it, that’s impossible, but I think that most of you will do it.

LOW QUALITY PROGRAMS Do you really know what effects some programs have on our society?

By: Silvia Dominguez Rodríguez

Nowadays there are many low quality programs, which have negative consequences on society.

Most of the people who what these programs are children and teenagers. They spend a lot of time in front of the television and don’t do any sports or exercises.

Children, who are devoting so much time to television, get worst marks at school and can’t get on with other pupils very easily. This isolates children who instead of playing games with other and going to the park, stay at home watching T.V.

They don’t increase their vocabulary or improve their spelling. Also they don’t develop any thinking skills because they don’t have to pay much attention.

Watching a low quality program is a passive action. The only effort viewers make is to press a button on the remote control.

Yesterday we spoke with a teenager called Maria, and she shared with us how her brother has changed his attitude due to these programs and how she is trying to help her brother. At first Jalman only watched T.V one hour. But after two or three months he started to watch almost four or five hours of television each day. Now Maria is trying to show her brother that watching so much television has produced negative changes in his life. She is tying her best and is making progress, but her job isn’t enough if Jalman doesn’t make an effort.

An example of low quality program in Spain is Sálvame, because the fundament of this program is based on the criticism, they are disrespectful to the viewers and also to the people they talk about and all those things for only some money.

So, why don’t we think over about watching these programs that don’t have any fundamental? All depends on us, and with our effort we could manage, and they will be no low quality programs only good ones.

Do you want a place to visit this summer? You have a lot of options, but if you want a sunny and funny place, we recommend you go to Torrevieja.

Torrevieja is a city in Valencia. It has a lot of things! A beach, a fair throughout the summer, a place for diving, a great variety of restaurants, lots of places to stay at, and many people to meet.

First, about where to stay-- You have three main options. You can stay in one of the many hotels, from two to five stars. To stay in an apartment, there are fewer options, but since people usually don’t stay there, you could find one easily. And the last option is to stay in a housing development. All of them have a swimming pool, so people like it more.

Next, we offer some suggestions to organize your timetable. We recommend you go to the beach in the morning, which is the best hour. In the afternoon you can go diving or to the swimming pool. And at night you can have dinner at a restaurant and then to the fair. People usually like doing this.

PRAGUE: A GOOD PLACE FOR YOUR HOLIDAYS

The Czech Republic´s capital has a lot of history and one of the most beautiful monuments in Europe, but it is also is very unknown. By: Jaime Antonaya If you ask someone about London or Rome, they will know where they are, but not everyone would know where Prague is. The most visited places are the most populated and with the most history. Prague has history but is not very populated. In Europe the majority of the people only follow the news from Germany, France, Italy, and UK. Prague has very interesting monuments like the astronomical clock, which is located in the most important square. The clock was first installed in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working.

If you go to Prague you can't use the euro because they have a different currency called CZ. The hotels are good. A suggestion: if you're traveling in winter, don't stay on the highest floor of the hotel because the heating is very high so all the heat goes up and gets trapped. The food is very bad because the weather is cold which has negative effects on cultivated food. There are some good restaurants where you can drink and eat very well. Also there's a Cubist cafe where you must make reservation. So if you want to go these holidays, why not?

The one million dollar car and the fastest car ever. Now we are going to learn more about this car.

By: Alejandro Martin Cañadilla

Bugatti Veyron is a brand of the German company Volkswagen that bought this company. Originally it was Italian.

The Bugatti Veyron is the fastest car in the world with 1001 of horse power and a motor of 16 cylinders and 4 turbos that makes this beast pass from 0 to 100 km/h in 2,5 seconds and reach a speed of 407 km/h. This car also has a lot of troubles because of the price of construction. It costs 5.5 million to be produced and is sold from 1 to 1.9 million dollars. Another problems is its weight of

2000.The supersport edition (the most expensive) is made up of carbon frame . Only a few wallets can buy this car and only see it would be like a dream, but is far better if you are inside feeling thee v16 motor roaring in tour nape. Ferrari is a poor peasant compared with this beast.

As a conclusion there´s no one in the world, the only one that can

face the Bugatti Veyron is the koenigsegg ccxr.

Technology today has advanced a lot in only a few years; the best examples of this are smartphones and tablets. Technology has changed our lives. Now with 3G you could enter to internet anywhere. Technology has saved lives and helped in important investigations for example artificial hearts and x-rays.

SMARTPHONES

Smartphones have changed our way of using mobile phones. With smartphones you can install applications for any use. (The term smartphone refers to the ability of be used as a pocket computer).

There are many brands of smartphones today but only two operative systems: Android designed by Google and iPhone designed by Apple. In Android you can use Google play where you can install applications through your computer and in Apple you can use iCloud were you can share applications music photos and other documents with iPads or iMacs.

Conclusion: both operative systems are good but if you want a cheap mobile phone I recommend you Android. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

ONE DIRECTION By: Marta Barragán Losada

One Direction is a British-Irish music group formed by 5 members: Harry Edward Styles, Louis William Tomlinson, Niall James Horan, Liam James Payne and Zayn Jawaad Malik.

They all auditioned for the British show, X Factor, as solo artists, but they didn´t make it through to the judges. Simon Cowell, their mentor, thought that they had too much talent to be eliminated so he decided to put them in a group. They finished 3rd on the X Factor in 2010.

They made a documentary called “A Year in the Making” that shows their journey on X Factor and how they have been traveling around the world to met their fans.

Their first single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” has been number one in the UK and has won a Brit Award. Then they released two more singles, “Gotta Be You” and “One Thing”. Their first album is called “Up All Night” which is number one in the UK and the US.

Personally, I like them because their music is catchy, beautiful and you can dance to it. I think they have a long way to go and that they are going to be very successful.

Be Fashionable ! If you want to be fashionable, follow these instructions:

• MODERN CLOTHES:

Nowadays, people are very interested in fashion. We wear very colorful t-shirts and shorts, but people also wear patterns, like leopard or zebra stripes.

• SUMMER CLOTHES:

This summer, the clothes that people are going to wear are: colorful t-shirts, shorts and sandals. The bright t-shirts have a lot of colors, like fuchsia, green, blue and yellow… the shorts are pink, green, blue and white… and sandals also are grey, black, white and brown…also there are many dresses.

The dresses are mainly white, but there are many different colors.

!!!!!

I recommended wearing white shorts, a fuschia t-shirt and white sandals. This is a casual outfit. You can feel fresh outside and at the same time you are fashionable.

I also recommend wearing a white dress with a brown belt and with brown sandals. This outfit is for a momento that you have any event or special occasion and also you are fresh.
