6th Annual Columbia University/ ICOI Dental Implant SymposiumDr. Dennis Tarnow and Dr. Kenneth Judy moderated a spectacular 6th Annual Columbia University-ICOI Dental Implant Symposium. 10 CE hours and a day and a half program at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, December 11-12, 2015. Dr. Judy immediately gave full credit to Dr. Tarnow for sourcing and organizing the educational event titled “Technology, Trends and Techniques in Implantology”.

A roll call of nations showed delegates from a number of nations: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, Germany, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, South Korea, Syria, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Venezuela and Vietnam.

Dr. James Doundoulakis was the organizing force for the 2nd World Implant Expo of the Greater New York Dental Meeting, November 29 – December 2, 2015. It is one of the largest meetings in the world, with 1,600 exhibitors and over 53,000 attendees from 137 countries. Both the ICOI and AAID worked together to present an eight session implant educational event. The concept will be utilized next year, i.e. World Expo 3.

Dr. Scott Ganz organized ICOI’s part of the program. The entire program included presentations in different formats by the following clinicians: Drs. Bart Silverman, Paulo Malo, Jack Piermatti, Jack Krauser, Renzo Casellini, MDT, Kenneth Kurtz, Suheil Boutros, Aeklavya Panjali, Dennis Tarnow, Robert Eskow, Barry Goldenberg, Joseph Leonetti, Cheryl Pearson, Avi Schetritt, Shankar Iyer, Scott Ganz, Peter Pizzi, CDT, and John Minichetti.

Needless to say, the ICOI/AAID cooperative educational event provided a multi-national, extensive, implant educational opportunity for all who attended. I am sure everyone will be looking forward to next year’s (2016) event.

Each presentation was followed by a Question and Answer participation from the audience. Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez’ lecture “Facial Reconstruction and Tissue Transplantation” was absolutely riveting.

On Friday evening the ICOI hosted a faculty dinner attended by Columbia’s Dean, Dr. Christian Stohler. On Saturday, at the end of the scientific program, several individuals received ICOI Advanced Credentials.

AroundThe WorldCAMBODIAAs Bright as a Sunrise at Angkor WatThe 18th ICOI Asia-Pacific Section Congress in Siem Reap Cambodia, November 13-15, 2015 was a shining example of global success in teaching and learning.

The hospitality of the Dental Implant Society of Cambodia and its President, Dr. Poch Sophearoth, was evident as attendees from Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, China, Cambodia and Korea participated in the hands-on workshops, the main podium presentations, the exhibits and the poster presentations.

The program Chairmen are to be congratulated. Dr. Sophearoth worked with ICOI Asia-Pacific President, Dr. Shohei Kasugai, in having an outstanding varied group of international speakers.

A brief, but powerful, video introduction that described the global nature of the ICOI was given by Dr. Kenneth Judy.

Then, Dr. Paul Yu spoke about Advanced Ridge Augmentation. He was followed by Dr. Takanori Suzuki (the official/unofficial photographer supreme) who spoke about the Problems with Excess Cement in Implant Dentistry. Dr. Sang-Choon Cho (who is also Chair of ICOI IDREF) delivered material on the complex topic of Surgical Tunnel Technique for Horizontal Ridge Augmentation and Esthetic Soft Tissue Management in the Atrophic Maxilla.

Other topics that were well covered included the research done by Dr. Yasunori Ayukawa (a Senior Editorial Reviewer for the journal Implant Dentistry) on the persistence of osseointegration and of peri-implant soft tissue sealing. The ever-present concern of peri-implantitis was approached by Dr. Nikos Mattheos regarding its prevention and its management.

Dr. Someth Hong of our host country was informative and entertaining with his topic ‘When Implants Go Bad and Patients Go Crazy’. An informative presentation on piezosurgery in conjunction with implant surgery was given by Dr. Hyeon-Min Kim.

The mind-filling presentations were continued on the next day. In the evening attendees were given a break with an outdoor gala dinner at Kravan Temple in the shadow of the Angkor Wat Temple Complex.

Outstanding Cambodian cuisine was augmented by entertainment by beautifully clad traditional Cambodian Dancers. These inspirational performances were interspersed with the Cambodian martial artists who gave it their realistic all with, and without weapons.

The presenters the very next day continued to be international caliber. Dr. Konstantinos Valavanis covered the must-see topic of implant therapies in the esthetic zone. Dr. Shohei Kasugai presented on the critical topic of the avoidance of problems in various aspects of implant treatments. Dr. Ady Palti spoke about the many aspects of sinus elevation from techniques, materials and instrumentation. He entertained questions which he answered in a very professional manner. Dr. Fred Bergmann covered a sophisticated subject that related augmentation techniques in the 3-dimensional reconstruction

of the severely atrophied alveolar.

All of this was followed, in the evening, by the Awards Ceremony that brought joy to the recipients and their families. The combination of education and camaraderie brought this symposium to a successful conclusion. It fulfilled the ongoing outreach, inclusion, and high standards of dental implant education for which the ICOI is known.
