Any business anytime anywhere has to generate cash surplus, popularly called

“Profits”. No successful business can afford to spend more than what it earns. Earning more than what is spent has to be necessarily a continuous process. Sustainance from a long term point of view is the key to any successful business enterprise.

This process will ultimately result in accumulated cash surplus which will act as a safety valve for an unexpected downturn which cannot be totally forgotten. There is nothing constant except change. Good days do not last forever. Any business has to be ready for set-backs. Hence “Financial Reserves” have to be compulsorily created to face such sudden set-backs.

However, one need to understand that making profits is certainly good but indulging in “Profiteering “ is a sin. One certainly can expect descent returns for the product sold or the services rendered. What is indescent is crossing all limits and trying to loot customers. This is unethical and may not even last long! Being extra smart in today’s highly competitive business scenario is acceptable but being unethical and getting earnings out of innocent customers is grossly unacceptable and should be looked down upon.

Doing any business ultimately involves

social service, service to society and above all service to humanity. Any field of business activity certainly has an impact on our fellow human beings. A good business conducted with noble intentions makes humanity happier. The basic purpose of life then gets satisfied.

Let us understand what our worthy forefathers did and how their business took care of the humanity at large. R.M. Lala in his book “For the love of India-The Life and Times of Jamsetji Tata” mentioned the following:

“One day a telegram came from Jamshedpur that there was not enough money for wages. R.D. Tata and Sir Dorab Tata (who was knighted in 1910) struggled to raise funds. In November 1924, the Steel Co. was on the verge of closing down. Sir Dorab pledged his entire personal fortune of Rs.1 Crore including his wife’s jewellery to obtain a loan of the same amount from the Imperial Bank of India”.

This sacrifice by the Tata Family was made not only to save just one Company but was made to take care of its Employees, Suppliers, Customers, Lenders, etc. In short humanity in general was the main focus.

Several of our ancestors like Tatas, Wadias, Godrej, Jeejeebhoy and Petits used their

wealth for the benefit of humanity. They all had a soft corner for their fellow human beings irrespective of their caste, creed or culture.

Jesus warned us “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. You cannot serve both God and money”.

We mortals do not seem to heed this warning. How disheartening it is to read what a Parsi Doctor (Dr. Noshir H. Antia) mentioned in his book “A Life of Change – the Autobiography of a Doctor”. His words are pertinent and need to be noted with serious attention.

“The health industry which is controlled by pharmaceutical and instrumentation companies is one of the fastest growing industries that has turned into a social disease – the rich are overmedicalised, the middle class is pauperized and the poor are just left to themselves”.

Let me end on a thought provoking note and that is the Business of Business is to ultimately serve the humanity; and then act upon what Swami Vivekanand mentioned years ago ………

“How long is this life for? As you have come into this world, leave some mark behind. Otherwise, where is the difference between you and the trees and stones? They too come into existence, decay and die”.

WZCC Vancouver BC Chapter arranged an interesting program on “Mentorship”. The program was held at Arbab Rostam

Guiv Dar-e-Mehr, Burnaby, BC. The Speaker, Mrs. Fi Dastoor was introduced by Mr. Kayras Irani.

Since a young age Fi Dastoor has volunteered for a variety of projects and activities. Fi has been associated with CYBF (Canadian Youth Business Foundation) since 2003. CYBF is now called Futurepreneur. She was introduced to CYBF via CESO (Canadian Executive Service Organization) which she joined in 1988. Her career spans over thirty years in the technology industry. In the latter years she has her own business - Dastoor Consulting doing a variety of projects from the medical industry to the technology industry. Fi was associated with the telecommunications industry for many years.

With Futurepreneur, Fi has mentored quite a few young entrepreneurs who went on to run their own successful businesses.

Her other volunteer activities include being an Ambassador to the Vancouver Opera and assisting them in any office/technology related work.

PRESENTATION ON MENTORSHIP:

What is a mentor, how does one become a mentor and what is involved in mentoring young business entrepreneurs?A mentor is a person who has expertise in a specific field and enjoys assisting someone with their venture in this specific field. A mentor is also a person who enjoys helping young entrepreneurs (age range 18 to 35 years) with their business. Businesses, for example, could range from fitness studios, events planner, restaurant, ballet studio, setting up shops, setting up a daycare, starting freelance work etc. Getting in touch with Futurepreneur and submitting a resume is the first step involved in becoming a business mentor.

What are the steps involved for a mentor with Futurepreneur (business mentor)After an interview with Futurepreneur a seminar is arranged as introduction and what is expected of a mentor. The seminar can be done on-line at one’s own pace and time. Most mentors have to have some business knowledge and basic accounting experience. If a mentor does not have experience in certain areas that is required for a specific business, Futurepreneur will try and find a person who has the expertise and is available to assist. This is a volunteer position and the time devoted to any project is mutually agreed upon by the mentor and mentee.

How does a mentor and protégé (mentee) negotiate a good fitWhen the on-line course is completed, Staff at Futurepreneur will

then set up the mentor with a mentee who is starting up a business. A mentor can also be asked to help an existing business in progress. The mentor will then set up an initial meeting with the mentee at a mutually convenient date. If both parties - the mentor and mentee - feel there is a good fit and they could work together, the mentor contacts Futurepreneur to say there is a good fit with the mentee. If it is not a good fit another mentee will be found for the mentor to assist in setting up of the business. Government of Canada provides a loan of $15,000 without interest for two years to mentee.

What is involved for the mentor to keep in touch with the menteeMinimum time required of a mentor to help a mentee is approximately 10 hours per month for a term of two years. In some cases more time per month maybe required and in other cases less time is required. Contact with a mentee can be done via email, phone or face to face meetings. Every three months a report is submitted by both the mentor and mentee showing any updates, time spent and achievement to date with regard to the business.

What constitute a successful business operationFuturepreneur deems a business successful if it is still in operation after two years and also when the loan of $15K is paid back. The loan is usually paid back when the business shows a profit and the owner of the business is able to make a minimum payment.

The term and length a mentor is associated with a menteeTwo years is the duration a mentor has to assist and help a mentee with their respective business. In order to assist with the business a mentor maybe asked for any type of involvement that is required to make the business a success. A mentor should advise and direct a mentee in the direction towards making the business a success especially if it appears that the business is going off the rails or not following the business plan.

Wrapping up a contract between mentor and menteeJust before two years, the mentor is alerted by Futurepreneur to inform that the contract is coming to an end. The mentor may be asked to submit a final report regarding the business and whether is shows signs of being a success and if the mentee can manage on their own. The mentor is then asked if they wish to start another project with a new mentee or take a little break.

The session ended with discussions, and question and answer session. Aubtin Yazdgardian offered a vote of thanks to Mrs. Fi Dastoor and presented her a book as a token of appreciation.

The New York Chapter of WZCC held its Summer Quarterly & Youth Meeting on July 9 at the Ravagh Persian Restaurant

There were bingo games, a silent auction, a raffle, and a stall with religious items, a Gatha book. A short reading of the book ‘Go Home’ by its Parsi Author Sohrab Fracis.

The mouthwatering menu at the gahambar was bhindi papeta, sali murghi, masala dar chawal, accompanied by sev, dahi, saria, rotli, kachumber and lagan nu achaar.

In conclusion, as mentioned earlier, The Central Florida Chapter, follows a technical Meeting with a Gahambar, which exposes WZCC activities to a wider audience, picking up

WZCC EXPLORES GOODS AND SERVICES TAX (GST)

RECENT EVENTS

Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been the hot topic in India since last few months. It is one of the major reforms which is

expected to transform India’s economy favourably.

It is the single biggest tax reform in independent India and provides one single framework to replace most existing indirect taxes and provide a single levy, seamless tax credit and streamlined administration with more emphasis on electronic based self compliance. GST is a value added tax based on the destination principle wherein tax revenue is attributed to the destination state.

WZCC Mumbai Chapter organized a GST Seminar on Friday 23rd June, 2017 at Kilachand Hall in Indian Merchant’s Chamber, Mumbai to provide an introduction to GST and explain the various concepts under GST. The hall was packed to its capacity. The seminar was conducted by Mr. Xerxes Dastur, Partner of V. S. Dastur & Co., Chartered Accountants and also the Vice Chairman of WZCC

Mumbai Chapter. He covered the significant aspects of GST including the impact and issues under GST and provided much needed clarity on an otherwise relatively unfamiliar topic.

After the seminar, there was a round of questions and Mr. Dastur provided insights and views on various questions and queries from the audience which proved more illuminating and interesting as the same brought out very clearly the practical aspects which need to be implemented in actual practice.

This talk was appreciated by one and all.

Subsequently, there was a request to conduct a similar program on GST from members who were unable to attend.

Taking that into consideration and in view of the continuous new developments and provisions under GST, WZCC Mumbai Chapter organized one more program for the benefit of all concerned.

This program was once again conducted by Mr. Xerxes Dastur on July 24, 2017at YIAMAS, The Experimental Space at Ballard Estate, Mumbai. He explained to the participants that “GST” is a consumption based tax levied on sales, manufacture, consumption of goods and services at a national level. This tax will be substitute for all indirect taxes levied by State and Central Government. Exports and direct tax like Income Tax, Corporate Tax and Capital Gain Tax will not be affected by GST.

He also covered the positive and negative aspects of GST, GST rates/tax slabs and the impact of GST compared to the current scenario. Some of the members who had already attended the earlier program also participated in this Seminar. There was active participation from the members and this program too was a huge success.

In his memory, the Government of Maharashtra named its first double-decker bridge the Bharatratna JRD Tata Overbridge at Kasarwadi Phata, Pune. Beside these awards, he has also received several International Awards for Aviation – the Tony Jannus Award in March 1979, the Gold Air Medal of the Federation Aeronautique International in 1985, The Edward Warner Award of the International Civil Aviation Organization, Canada in 1986 and the Daniel Guggenheim Medal in 1988. The French Legion of Honour was bestowed on him in 1983.

■ JRD Tata died in Geneva, Switzerland on 29 November 1993 at the age of 89 of a kidney infection. Upon his death, the Indian Parliament was adjourned in his memory – an honour not usually given to persons who are not members of parliament. He is buried in the Tata Family crypt at the famous Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris along with his parents, wife and siblings.
