WORLD WAR I BEGINS!!!

WORLD WAR I

The Two Fronts: (A front is where the fighting occurred)

Western FrontThe Western Front began with the German invasion of France. It was mainly fought in France. The Western Front was fought with a new military tactic called Trench Warfare.

Eastern FrontThe Eastern Front of the war was fought along the German and Russian border.

Global Conflict:World War I soon became a global conflict. Europeans began fighting in Africa and Asia over their colonial possessions.

The United States entered WWI on the side of the Allies on April 2, 1917. The main cause for the United States entering the war

was the unrestricted use of submarine warfare. German U-Boats (submarines) were shooting American ships out of the water.War Affects the Home Front:

The war also affected the people back home in many ways… Countries began participating in total war, where they devote ALL their

resources to the war effort. Resources such as steel, food, weapons and ammunition, fuel, clothing, etc.

Government began placing its citizens on a rationing program. Rationing is when people are allowed to buy only a certain amount of items needed for the war effort.

Countries also began to use propaganda to persuade public opinion about the war and gain support for the war.

Role of Women In The War:While the men were off fighting the war, women replaced them in the factories at home. Women were the ones supplying the soldiers with food, clothing, and weapons.

END OF THE WAR:Revolutions cause Russia to withdraw from the war in 1917.With the help of new American troops, Germany was forced to surrender. The Allies are victorious over the Central Powers. World War I officially ends on November 11, 1918.

Legacies of WWI:Millions of lives lostCost $338 billionCountries completely destroyed

The Treaty of Versailles:The “winners” of WWI met together at the Paris Peace Conference to decide on a plan for peace and punishments for Germany. The U.S. president, Woodrow Wilson, came up with a plan for world peace which included a League of Nations.
