Dear Industry Professionals, On behalf of Show Management, I would like to thank you for taking an interest in World Smart Energy Week. This report summarises the 12th installment of the show which was held early March 2016 at Tokyo. A total of 1,387 exhibitors and 63,423 visitors gathered under one roof, serving as the best venue to meet, network and share new ideas for smart and renewable energy business with a rich mix of professionals from across Japan and the world. I hope you will be able to get an idea of what the show can offer and be a good reference for both existing and prospective show participants. What is World Smart Energy Week?

World Smart Energy Week is the world’s leading comprehensive B-to-B trade show for smart & renewable energy held twice a year in Japan. (At the beginning of March in Tokyo and beginning of September in Osaka) The show aims to provide a platform for professionals from across Japan, Asia and the world to negotiate, share ideas and network for the future of renewable and smart energy business. Since the launch 12 years ago with FC EXPO, the show has continued to grow and now consists of 9 exhibitions and world-class conference sessions filling up Tokyo Big Sight – the largest exhibition centre of the country. Through the exhibition and conference, the business covered by the show ranges from power generation, storage, saving, transmission to distribution technologies. As well as strengthening business within individual sectors, professionals will be able to work on building connections with professionals from different and related areas of renewable and smart energy by participating in the show. To keep up with the changing conditions of the industry, this year the show further expanded its scale and the profile of the show by an addition of a exhibition specialising in biomass power generation which is attracting much attention from renewable and smart energy related professionals.

An ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the opening of World Smart Energy Week 2016. 56 leaders from the industry joined the event as dignitaries to show their support. (See next page for the full list of dignitaries)

“Since its start in 2005, World Smart Energy Week has grown into a cluster of world class exhibitions. With INT’L BIOMASS EXPO being added this year, we have a total of 1,387 exhibitors from 27 countries. The show is now one of the world’s largest smart energy fair. Exhibitions are globally recognized for the economic effects they create. I believe World Smart Energy Week is a good example of this. Through enriching the event, we strongly hope to contribute to the growth of the energy industry.”

Remarks by: Yasuhiro Matsuyama, Director, New and Renewable Energy Division, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) “As you know, we have made our energy mix policy last year. We are expecting smart energy to cover 22-24% of the entire energy by 2030. By restructuring the electricity system and promoting the energy to be used broadly, we will improve the environment and accelerate renewable energy throughout Japan. World Smart Energy Week is a great opportunity to solve our problems and generate new business. We Department of Energy will support from several aspects to develop renewable energy and accelerate the construction of new energy system.” Toast by: Xiangping Ruan, Minister-Counsellor, EMBASSY OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA: “It is my honor to invited to deliver a toast at this mega event. From China, 150 companies exhibit this year. We consider this event to be the best opportunity to expand new business in the renewable energy field. It is also an indispensable venue for Chinese engineers to find and compare the latest products at once. We China Embassy will fully support this event, and I am happy to network with everybody here.”

A reception was held on the first day during the lunch hours to facilitate networking between executives of the industry such as the policy makers, executives from exhibiting firms and organisations, speakers from keynotes and other conference sessions, politicians, etc. A total of 765 executives attended the event.

The World’s Largest Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Show For the ongoing commercialisation of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) and development of its infrastructure, hydrogen stations, storage tanks, sensing devices, dispensers and component technologies were highlighted at FC EXPO. Being the largest show of its kind in the world, FC EXPO was the must attend show for professionals involved in FC business to catch the latest materials, components, devices and technologies for the development of fuel cells. 252 exhibitors participated . At the Keynote, METI, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY, HONDA MOTORS and KAWASAKI HEAVY INDUSTRIES shared the strategies and prospects towards a hydrogen society.

Japan’s Largest Show for PV Business After the expansion of PV cell and module installations influenced by the generous Feed-In-Tariff, the business for solar in Japan is now shifting towards innovative technologies and solutions such as efficient manufacturing processes and cost reduction. Such products and technologies were highlighted at PV EXPO as well as cells and modules of leading firms from both Japan and the world. Japanese firms such as PANASONIC, SHARP, XSOL etc. showcased their “Total Energy Solutions”. Major firms from overseas also continue to exhibit such as TRINA SOLAR, YINGLI GREEN ENERGY, CANADIAN SOLAR, HANWHA Q CELLS, JINKO SOLAR, JA SOLAR, etc. Operation and Maintenance (O&M) for PV systems was a major theme at PV SYSTEM EXPO and the update of the latest trends and outlook of the business was discussed at the PV EXPO Keynote Session by METI, PANASONIC and U.S. Department of Energy. Overall, 431 exhibitors participated in PV EXPO and PV SYSTEM EXPO.

The World’s Largest Rechargeable Battery Show With the advancements of applications for electric vehicles, drones and robots, the R&D for next-generation batteries are accelerating. The latest systems for such batteries and capacitors were highlighted at BATTERY JAPAN. A new featured exhibit zone for “Battery Management Systems (BMS)” were also launched at this year's edition where BMS for the enhancement of safety, longer life and power efficiency of batteries were be showcased. As the world’s largest renewable battery show, BATTERY JAPAN was the best platform to seek the latest technologies and trends from experts across Japan and the world. 265 exhibitors participated. Other topics that were featured at the exhibition and the conference were LIB, capacitors, electric vehicles, stationary battery, security measures, etc. At the Keynote “The latest trends of EV and battery storage technologies towards a low carbon society” was discussed by NISSAN MOTORS, LG CHEM and TESLA MOTORS JAPAN attracting over 1,640 attendees.

Japan’s Largest Show for Smart Grid As IoT technologies advance, the latest ICT services, sensor technologies for wireless networks for Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) and Building Management Systems (BEMS) were highlights at INT’L SMART GRID EXPO. Key players in the field such as TOSHIBA, MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC, MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES, FUJI ELECTRIC, etc. exhibited their latest technologies and solutions. A total of 118 exhibitors participated at this edition. At the conference held parallel to the exhibition, TOKYO ELECTRIC POWER, MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC, SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES, TOSHIBA, HITACHI and other leading firms of smart grid business shared their visions of smart grid society, latest technologies for a stable power system and developments of smart cities in Japan.

Japan’s Largest Show for Electricity Retail Business With Japan’s liberalisation of the electricity retail market just around the corner from April, exhibits and conference sessions related to the topic was one of the major highlights throughout the show. The ENERGY MARKET LIBERALISATION EXPO Keynote Session was one of the most attended sessions at the conference where the major gas company of Japan’s capital, Tokyo Gas shared the detailed strategies for total energy business and services they will be providing as a new entrant to the market. The major electric power company already a monopoly of western Japan, The Kansai Electric Power also introduced their challenges and new services such as plans to target residential customers. There was a big crowd at ENERGY MARKET LIBERALISATION EXPO where entrants of the market were able to compare various IT solutions, services, package deals to utilise in their new retail business. 61 firms exhibited overall.

Japan’s Largest Wind Energy Show Increasing number of wind farm projects in Japan which has passed the 3-year environment assessment is now ready for business. As cabling and infrastructure between the capital and the northern region of Japan have also been installed, potential for wind energy is expected to grow. Various wind turbines, components, devices, O&M related services etc. were exhibited at WIND EXPO to aid the expansion of the business. Being the largest wind energy show in Japan, it was the perfect venue to negotiate and network with key players of the business. A total of122 exhibitors participated from across Japan and the world. Future perspectives of the business were shared by ENERCON, SENVION, GOLDWIND SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, and GAMESA at the WIND EXPO Special Session. Strategies and prospects were also discussed by major players in Japan - METI, Municipal National Council for Wind Power Promotion, Marubeni Corp. and MHI Vestas Offshore Wind at the WIND EXPO Keynote Session.

Japan’s Leading Show for Eco-friendly Homes & Green Building “Smart Wellness” and “Zero Emission” have been hot topics amongst the professionals involved in housing and building related business in Japan. Essentials for such homes and building such as Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS), air conditioning, energy generating devices, latest materials and components for insulation were showcased across the show ground. Special exhibit space, namely “High-efficiency Housing Equipment Fair “ and “Building Contractor Support Zone” were held for the first time this year. 82 exhibitors participated at this edition.

Japan's Leading Exhibitions for Biomass Power Generation As mentioned in the opening remarks of the ribbon-cut ceremony, INT’L BIOMASS EXPO was newly launched at this year’s show. The biomass power generation market in Japan is expected to grow with the influence of the liberalisation of the electricity retail market playing a part as well. Local governments across Japan are to expand the business of production and consumption of energy utilising local resources. The latest pelletising technologies, logistic services, fuel products and other related support services were explored by local governments, plants, institutions and media to catch the latest trends. 56 exhibitors participated overall.

During the show period, a Technical Conference was held in parallel to the exhibitions at the Conference Tower of Tokyo Big Sight. World renowned industry leaders from the 9 energy sectors covered by the show gathered to share the outlook of the industry, latest technology, market trends and various strategies for business and national and international energy policies.

Including 9 Keynote Sessions , 6 Special Sessions, Technical Sessions and Exhibitors’ Product/Technology Seminars, 227 sessions were held throughout the show period. As though to portray the show participants’ interest in the liberalisation of Japan’s electricity retail market, starting from April 2016, the ENERGY MARKET LIBERALISATION EXPO Keynote Session was one of the sessions that attracted the most attendees . Other sessions that attracted the most attendees include the BATTERY JAPAN Keynote, World Smart Energy Week Keynote and the PV EXPO Keynote. New Exhibition Starting in 2017 A new exhibition for advanced thermal power generation technologies will be added to the show line-up of World Smart Energy Week next year. Recently, efficient and eco-friendly ways to generate thermal energy have been grabbing the attention of the energy industry. To provide a platform for professionals to seek engineering technologies and components to build, maintain and operate such thermal power plants THERMAL POWER EXPO (1st Next-generation Thermal Power Generation Expo) will be launched with the support of the Thermal and Nuclear Power Engineering Society (TENPES) as the co-organiser with Reed Exhibitions Japan. Wind Energy to Bloom in 2017 WIND EXPO will continue to be held as Japan’s largest wind energy show at the upcoming show in 2017 but the next edition will be held with the officially support of Japan Wind Power Association (JWPA) as the co-organiser. In preparation for the expansion of Japan’s market potential, the show is looking to attract greater number of technologies and products to exhibit with the cooperation with member firms of the association. Many of the existing firms have already reserved to expand their booth size and Japanese and international firms who have not yet exhibited at WIND EXPO have also booked their exhibiting space. A specialised seminar for Offshore Wind Turbines will also be held within the exhibition hall to boost opportunities for wind energy professionals to share and build relations to support the growth of this booming area.

Concept of ECO HOUSE & ECO BUILDING EXPO to change ECO HOUSE & ECO BUILDING EXPO is changing its show concept and will be launched as “Int'l Building & Urban Development Expo”. For further details visit the official show website.

World Smart Energy Week 2017 to expand by 20% With the expansion of the show with growing potential for wind energy and the addition of THERMAL POWER EXPO, the show is expected to increase in scale by a further 20%. The extension of an additional hall space at Tokyo Big Sight, expected to be completed this autumn comes at a perfect time for World Smart Energy Week 2017. World Smart Energy Week will continue to serve as Japan’s largest comprehensive platform, contributing to further developments of smart and renewable energy business from March 1-3, 2017 again at Tokyo Big Sight. The Osaka edition will be held from September 7-9, 2016 at INTEX Osaka as World Smart Energy Week Osaka 2016.
