On 13 February 2012, Shohaday-e Radio hall of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) hosted an event celebrating World Radio Day. Verses from the holy Qur’an and the national anthem opened the meeting, which was then addressed by the Secretary General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, Dr Mohammad Reza Saeidabadi, who first and foremost explained the importance and status of radio in a rapidly changing and developing world. Referring to the rapid growth of communication and the emergence of modern information and communication technologies, the speaker emphasized the importance of radio as a means for communication to which many people have access, underpinning its important role in the exchange of knowledge and information, awareness raising among the general public, mutual understanding between nations, promoting cultural diversity and establishing peace. Following the address of the Secretary-General of the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO, the Persian translation of the joint message of the UNESCO Director General, Madam Irina Bokova, and the Secretary General of ITU was read by the Head of the Communication and Information Department of the National Commission, Dr Farhad Etemadi. The celebration of the first World Radio Day was received with lots of excitements by media practitioners, especially radio broadcasters and UNESCO CI Partners in Nigeria. In addition to the global objectives of the World Radio Day, the celebration in Nigeria was also used to draw attention to the importance of Community Radio for development with emphasis on the urgent need for government and its Agency, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to issue licences for the establishment of Community Radio in the country. The Day’s activities were hinged on the following three platforms:

i) Pre-13 February sensitization

ii) Live radio show (with listeners’ call-in facility)

iii) Press conference

i) Pre- 13 February sensitization

In view of the fact that this year’s celebration was the first one, awareness of the day among media practitioners and the public was extremely low, if at all. As a result, we sent a bulk email to partners and media organizations in the country intimating them with the declaration of February 13 as the World Radio Day. Attached to the mail was a background document which included ‘Why the World Radio Day?’. This culminated in some newspapers publishing some pre-event news items. In the same manner, there were promos of the live radio show that was to feature the Director & Country Representative on the morning of 13 February.

ii) Live Radio Show, “FACT FILE” on Ray Power 100.5 FM radio Network.

A live radio Talk/Interview show, called, ‘Fact File’ was organized for the Director and Country Representative, Dr Joseph Ngu, to articulate the importance of the World Radio Day. It was a 40-minute programme. The programme started at 8.00 am with the Presenter, Kunle Adewale, providing a historical background of Radio and a brief insight into ‘Why World Radio Day?’ Interestingly, phone-in callers on the programme were geographically spread across the country. We had callers from the North, South, East and the West. The programme ended at 9.00 a.m.

iii) The Press Conference

A Press Conference was held to provide further platform for the Direcor to formally present the speech of the Director General, UNESCO, Irina Bokova to the media. In addition to the DG’s speech, the Director also presented a speech that drew attention to challenges of community radio development in Nigeria. Partners in attendance included the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC); The Director General of the National Library of Nigeria; the Secretary General of the National Commission for UNESCO and the National Vice President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ). The media (Radio, TV, Newspapers and the wired service) were also well represented. N.B. Due to financial reason we could not produce a banner which we could have used as a backdrop during the Press Conference. We improvised with UNESCO Roll-up banners on other subjects.

PRESS COVERAGE Our activities for the World Radio Day were reported in the following media organizations: FRCN (The largest radio network in Africa); Voice of Nigeria; Aso Radio; Ray Power FM; TV Continental; AIT, The Guardian newspaper; The Punch newspaper; Leadership Newspaper; News Agency of Nigeria (NAN); Nigerian News Daily and a host of online newspapers.
