We have hosted this event at the Blackpool Imperial Hotel for the last five yearsand have developed a long and fruitful relationship with the sport of Pool whichis undoubtedly one of the most popular in the country.

This year’s event, like those that have gone before, has been organised by thehost country’s English Pool Association on behalf of the world governing body, the World Eightball Pool Federation, and I would like to thank both theseorganisations for their continued commitment and support.

This event is set to be the most exciting yet, with the Sky Sports cameras totelevise the later stages of the event, which will ensure those who will not behere in Blackpool have the same opportunity to enjoy all the action and excite-ment of the No 1 event in Pool – Barceló Hotels & Resorts World Eightball PoolChampionships.

The 2012 World 8-Ball PoolFederation Championshipspromise to be the most openworld tournament for anumber of years.

It is virtually impossible tonominate a red hot favouritefor the men’s singles titlethough the 20th anniversaryof these prestigiouschampionships will see a newname on the trophy.

That’s in part to the absence ofsome familiar names that havegraced the event down thedecades. But it’s also due tothe strength of the sport, notonly in the UK but throughoutthe globe. In addition to the top eightseeds, there’s scope foranother 10 or 12 players to liftthe trophy this week.

Australia nearly had their firstsingles champion in 12 yearsat the 2011 gathering as BenNunan reached the semi-finals.Sadly, Nunan hasn’t travelledwith the ‘Green and Golds’ thistime.

However, in John “Rusty”Wheeler - making his third ap-pearance on the Fylde Coast-Australia have a player whocould become the first winnerfrom Down Under since maver-ick Quinten Hann in 1999.The Aussies’ formidable squadalso includes Mick Delahunty, one of the all-time greats ofthe game, but still competingat the top of his sport.Closer to home there is

England skipper Lee Kendall, likely to be the only cue man tohave featured at every WorldChampionship. The Stokepotter has captured 10 teamtitles during his long career butunfortunately just missed outon the ‘big one.’However, he is a for merfinalist-losing to Irishman GregFarren-and even though wellinto the veteran stage, will beone of the favourites in manypeoples’ eyes.

Kendall currently tops the UKTour Premier League standingand with a Tour win under hisbelt already this season, he isenjoying some of the best formof his life.

England also boast two othermajor contenders for the titleand unlike Kendall (sorry, Lee)they are part of a new wave ofpotting aces. The first name tolook out for is Jack Pople, freshfrom his European title successin Dublin earlier this year.

Pople’s list of victims included:former World Masters winnerBen Flack, Thomas Morrow andMalta’s Clint Azzopardi.

The other home grown talent isa name that’s difficult to forgetand not that easy to get yourtongue round! So step forwardGuiseppe D’Imperio. We reckon sooner or laterGuiseppe will be worldchampion, perhaps even thisyear. Still part of the Under21’s squad, he is one of themost impressive newcomer the

men’sgame has seen in many years. The new European under 21champion swept all beforehim in Dublin defeating LeeShepherd 7-4 in the final. For good measure he disposedof current World Under 21champion Ashley Radford inthe quarter-finals as well asanother star of the future,Ireland’s Adam McMackin, inthe semis.

Ju s t f o r good measu re ,Guiseppe also won all 18 of hisframes in the team event.Indeed, his only defeat inthe entire tournament cameagainst Flack in the last eightof the main event.

The Welsh provide two of thetop eight seeds in Oly Bale andRussell Burgess. But they alsocan call on Tom Cousins, keento make an impact on thebiggest stage of them all.Cousins has won several majorprofessional t it les and iscertainly one to put yourmoney on for the title, it iswell within his reach this year.

The highlight of the past yearhas been the re-emergence ofScotland as a world force.Disappointed by their perform-ances at the European Cham-pionships, they have a firstclass team competing at theWorlds with an array of talent.Martin McIntosh is always athreat when anywhere near histop form and the word is thathe is playing really well in do-mestic pool.

However, the main threatmight just come from Pat

McCarron; no stranger towinning events with both theWorld Junior and World Under21 world titles to his credit.Aberdonian Pat is Nationalteam captain and the newsfrom north of the border is thatthey are expecting to see himin the TV stages.Previous semi-finalist RobMcKay is another contendervery capable of again appear-ing in the televised stages ofthe Sky Sports broadcast.Another contender is NorthernIreland’s Nigel Craig who wasin the 2009 World team. Hereturns to this year’s eventafter a two year absence. And what about the guys fromIreland? They might not bedoing too well recently in theindividual events but they arethe current European andWorld team winners.

All their players have proventhey can compete and win atthe very highest level. Per-haps, it will be an Irish nameon the cup for 2012?.Such is the cosmopolitannature of the championshipsthis year, we might just get asurprise from one of theAfrican contingent.Players from Uganda, Kenyaand Morocco will be verymuch of unknown quantity atthe Championships. But will wesee one of them rise to theoccasion at the 2012 Worldevent? It promises to be a fascinating10 days of competition with anelement of surprise guaranteedat every turn. Place your betson the identity of the newchampion.

Ladies Seedsfor the

World Championships 2012Name: Emma CunninghamSeed: OneIt’s been Emma’s misfortune trying to win trophiesin an era when Sue Thompson has dominated theladies scene. But the Newry born star is one of thefew capable of toppling the greatest female player ofall-time.In 2005, she became the youngest ever recipient ofthe title, beating Thompson in the final. And while itwas a long time between titles, Emma finally tri-umphed again in the ladies singles final 12 monthsago. Unexpectedly, her opponent wasn’t Thompsonbut Australian Renata Delahunty. And the NorthernIreland cue queen made no mistake and romped toan 8-2 victory after beating Welsh rival, ColletteHenriksen, in the semi-finals.Cunningham made her World Championship debut

Lives: Milton KeynesNickname: ‘Emz’back in 2003 when remarkably she reached the lastfour. In 2004, she progressed to the final but could-n’t stop Thompson lifting the trophy. DespiteThompson’s dominance, Cunningham is only one offour girls to have won the ladies world title since1993. In addition to her World 8-Ball Singles crown,Cunningham also collected another world title inBlackpool last year. She defeated Emma Wilkinson8-2 to capture the World Masters, ironically aftergetting the better of Delahunty again in the semi-fi-nals. Sadly, Cunningham’s talents haven’t been ondisplay on the Ladies International Pool Tour and itremains to be seen whether a lack of match practiceproves her undoing at the Imperial.Sister Mary is also a useful pool player.

Name: Sue ThompsonSeed: TwoSome things in life are predictable: a Briton failing towin Wimbledon, England losing a penalty shootout,a Britain's Got Talent winner never being heard ofagain. But when it comes to Sue Thompson winningthe World Ladies singles title, it's pretty much guar-anteed. However, the normal order was upset 12months ago. The Runcorn born left hander not onlyrelinquished her title but she didn't even make thefinal. Instead, Blackpool was rocking as Thompsoncrashed to a 7-5 quarter-final defeat against SharonDickson. And if that wasn't bad enough, the 'Queenof the Cue' slumped to a last eight defeat in theWorld Masters against Renata Delahunty. The hangover from Blackpool continued into the newLadies International Pool Tour season as Thompsonslipped to a last 16 defeat in Tour One against Amy

Lives: Kingston upon HullNickname: 'Thommo'Beauchamp. Unheard of! So, was the crown finallyslipping? Not a bit of it. Like the true champion sheis, Thompson bounced back in Tour Two at Leicester. And she did it in some style. In five matches shedropped only six frames-two in the final when beat-ing fourth seed Michelle Rooney 7-2. Sue, now livingon Humberside, has been winning world crownssince 1996. She arrives in Blackpool as top rankedplayer on the Tour with a 26 points lead over secondranked, Collette Henriksen. In total, Thompson haswon 10 world singles titles. A measure of herachievement can be gauged by looking at the his-tory books. The only player to come close to Thomp-son's record is Linda Leadbitter with four titles whileEmma Cunningham, of the current crop of players,is the only one with more than one to her name.

Name: Barbara TaylorSeed: ThreeBarbara has been a World Championship regular formore years than she probably cares to remember! And the tournament has provided plenty of high andlow spots.Indeed, she suffered the contrasting emotions in thesame match. The occasion was the 2008 ladies sin-gles final. Delight at qualifying for her first individ-ual showpiece turned into disappointment as localstar Lynette Horsburgh waltzed off with the spoils. The Kent stalwart also progressed to a last twoshootout of the 2010 World Masters only to lose 6-4 to Michelle Brown. Barbara, however, as numerousworld titles to her name as one of the pillars of theall-conquering England ladies team. One of those successes came 12 months ago as shesank the winning 8-Ball against Natalie Madden tosecure England's 7-6 win over Northern Ireland.

Lives: Rainham, KentNickname: ‘Babs’Also seeded three for last year's individualchampionships, 'Babs' lost 7-6 in the quarters toRenata Delahunty.'Babs' is seventh on the provisional Ladies Tourrankings, down by just one place on her 2011finishing position. She has reached the quarter-finals of both theopening two Tours, including the last event atLeicester, resulting in a 6-4 defeat to MichelleRooney. However, she overcame her last eight hoodoo bywinning last year's Champion of Champions ladiessingles title. She knocked out: Katie Henrick, LiesaConlin and Anne Rocca before beating Lynne Pinches6-4 in the final. And it's a good bet she will be at the business endof the Championships once more this year.

Name: Renata DelahuntySeed: Four

Renata took the Worlds by storm last year by reach-ing the ladies' singles final. In doing so she became only the second Australianfemale to progress that far after Natalie Froling 18years earlier. However, the 42-year-old from Adelaide suffered thesame fate as Froling against Linda Leadbitter in1993, losing to Ulster favourite Emma Cunningham. But she certainly left her mark on the tournamentdefeating: Anne Meadows,Kolbe Poole, CatherineBuckley, Barbara Taylor and Sharon Dickson.Renata, wife of top Aussie men's star, Mick, also gotthrough to the last four of the World Masters, in

Country: AustraliaNickname:

cluding victory over Sue Thompson, to complete amemorable 10 days.

Renata was Australian National singles champion in2009. She also reached the final again last year butlost out 9-6 to another familiar Blackpool face, SueBussanich.

Renata is seeded in the top four for the first time inwhat will be her sixth World Championship. She isalso captain of the women's squad.

No one begrudged EmmaCunningham her first Worldladies singles title in six yearswhen she beat Renata Delahuntyin the 2011 final.

Cunningham seemed to sufferalmost annually at the cue ofSue Thompson. But patienceis a virtue and the NorthernIreland international had herreward over Australian RenataDelahunty.

Thompson has dominated theladies scene in the sameway darts legend Phil Taylormastered his rivals on the Oche.At the last count, the formerScottish international hadamassed 10 singles titles. Butfavourites can be beaten as wasproved 12 months ago.In fact, the ladies tournamenttook on a new dimension 12months ago as Delahunty puther name in the frame forhonours.

The moral of the story is there is‘always hope’.And it is great to see the rise ofthe Aussies who travel from theother side of the world everyyear to compete in the greatest8-Ball event on the planet.

And there is plenty of girl powerattached coming from DownUnder. In addition to Renata,Sue Bussanich and Nicole Welshare two others who have startedto put their stamp on the toplevel of ladies pool.

The Aussie ladies won the Worldteam title in 2007 followed by asemi-final spot last year. So, willwe see one of them lift theindividual title at the 2012Worlds?However, there is another brightstar emerging in the NorthernHemisphere and her name isAmy Beauchamp.‘Our’ Amy is the new Europeansingles champion courtesy of a

7-3 victory over England skipperJackie Baker. She also enjoyedan equally impressive semi winagainst Collette Henriksen.

Baker is another World Champi-onship stalwart; a winner of 10team titles, European championherself in 2004 and runner-upthree years earlier.

She has played County pool forKent and London, has probablynever done herself justice in theWorld Singles. But she alwayshas the capability to test theleading contenders and maybethis will be finally Baker’s year.

Maybe there is a power shift atthe top of the game?

Henriksen, Baker and NorthernIreland’s Michelle Rooney -along with Delahunty - are jointfourth seeds. However, Renataclaims fourth because of herfinal spot last year.

Emma Cunningham and SueThompson are indeed the topstars of the ladies game. Butwithout doubt there are otherswho are now showing that theyare capable of taking the title.Henriksen, nicknamed the‘Smiling Assassin’, has appearedin two of the last three world

semi-finals and could just be thenext one to show her skills tothe Sky Sports viewers in thetelevised final.

Let’s not forget Scotland's andBlackpool’s very own, LynetteHorsburgh, who took the title in2008 and has regularly beenamong the top four seeds.

The ‘Pocket Rocket’ is now start-ing to get back to her brilliantbest while former Europeanladies champion, Sharon Dick-son of Wales, went all the wayto the semis in last year’sWorlds. She is another who hasexperience and the ability.

England have traditionally beenstrong in the ladies’ individualand have new blood in theirteam for this year’s event. How-ever, eighth seed Carly Smith, isstill in the squad to provide thatextra experience to the new-comers.

Kim O’Brien and CatherineBuckley are the Irish ladies’seeded players, both of whomhave reached the latter stagesof previous championships. So,watch out Emma and Sue-thecontenders are coming to getyou!

It gives me great pleasure to again sponsor the Junior World 8 Bal l Championships in Blackpool this year. Lastyear was the first year that we have sponsored this event and we are veryhappy & proud to be able to be associatedwith this important event again. I eagerlyawait to see who can pick up the trophythis year, will it be another new face? Orwill Mick Hill be able to successfully defendhis title?

We see this event as being hugely significant and extremely important torecognise the up and coming stars of thefuture. The pool is usually uninhibited, exciting and played with the confidencethat I am sure will generate future SeniorWorld Champions.

Strachan and Milliken have a long historywith cuesports in Blackpool dating back tothe days when the professional WorldSnooker Qualifiers were held at the Norbreck Castle in the 1990's. Since thenBlackpool has become a Mecca for EnglishPool and we have developed a strong bondand friendship with the English 8 ball eliteplayers and their governing bodies theEnglish Pool Association and the World 8Ball Pool Federation.

In these difficult financial times we see thepub industry having a very tough time ofit with pubs still closing down each andevery week in the UK. It is great to see

that despite these tough times the gameof English 8 ball strong and thriving at alllevels. This is down to the quality of thegame itself, the enthusiasm of the playersand also as a result of the tireless work ofthe various national and internati and theEnglish Pool Association.

The World Championships, which we seeas the absolute pinnacle of the sport neverdisappoints and continues to deliver unrivalled drama and excitement. We areproud to be associated with these championships for well over ten years andsupply very best 6811 cloth to give theplayer the best possible speed, touch andcontrol, all combining to give ultimateplaying conditions. The tournament package of Strachan Cloth, Supreme tables and Aramith balls make a perfectplaying surface for the finest players in theworld.

It just remains for me now to thank all ofthe players who play and train each dayon Strachan cloth and to wish all the players in this years World Championshipsall the very best of luck.

Enjoy your pool.Stuart GardinerEuropean Sales Manager.
