Chapter 13 : Midstream
Actuators
Actuators are devices which are
used to operate valves. Actuators for
midstream applications range from
cheap manually operated actuation
to high tech hydraulic or electric mo-
tors, though the majority of installed
actuators are manually operated.
Midstream actuators is a rela-
tively small market due to a small
installed base compared to upstream
actuators. The market for actuators
is directly related to the number of
valves, and in-turn, pipeline instal-
lations and stations. <41” diameter
pipeline is the most common globally
and hence % of expenditure was
focused in this diameter range in
2014.
Through the forecast, large diameter
pipeline expenditure will see the
strongest growth, with a CAGR
of % to 2019, due to number of
large-scale projects which are under
construction.
New midstream actuators installa-
tion is driven by midstream projects,
which are generally unaffected by
commodity price shocks due to long
lead times. DW expects expenditure
to see minimal effect from oil and
steel price decline in 2015, though a
small drop is expected in 2015 due
to a contraction in new liquid instal-
lations compared to 2014.

Chapter 11 : Fixed & Floating Production
Waste Heat Recovery Units
Waste Heat Recovery Units
(WHRUs) are large pieces of equip-
ment which capture excess heat from
process equipment or power genera-
tion and convert this into usable en-
ergy to feed back into other process
equipment. WHRUs offer a practical
solution to reducing the amount of
fuel necessary to run the production
system, thus reducing operating costs
and fuel storage.
WHRUs only see limited applica-
tion on fixed platforms, therefore
expenditure is heavily dominated
by floating production systems,
which will account for % of spend
through the forecast period.
Latin America is the chief driver of
WHRU expenditure, due to the num-
ber of high complexity FPSOs which
are expected to come onstream in
the coming years, namely for use in
Brazilian deepwater plays.
Africa, Australasia and Western
Europe see the highest growth rates
through the forecast period – %,
% and % respectively. This is
driven by a large number of high
complexity FPS installations for deep-
water projects.

Douglas-Westwood’s Drilling & Pro-duction (D&P) model is a key driver of this report. Research is conducted into the upstream sectors of 60 key producers and the number of wells to be drilled is predicted. This data both feeds models directly and drives foot-age, wellstock (active wells) and work-over models which indicate demand for oilfield equipment. Additionally, outputs from D&P feed into DW’s fleet models. These look at historical demand to determine the likely fleet size and hence the number of new units to be constructed in order to meet demand (includes ROVs).
DW’s in-house databases are also a key driver for the report. Databases for fixed platforms, FPS and land rigs are maintained by DW to ensure up-to-date drivers for asset-related oilfield equipment models. In addition, DW conducts primary research to sense check data entries and assump-tions, supported by selected use of third-party data.
All DW models associated with oil-field equipment are updated quarterly with the latest available driving data. All expenditure models feature a built-in inflation index generated from global economy, oil price, steel price and demand pressure data. Servicing expenditure constitutes routine re-placement of small parts, seals, drivers etc. but does not include inspection or labour costs.

Douglas-Westwood’s (DW) NEW quarterly publication the World Oilfield Equipment Market Forecast provides unique insight into the global oilfield equipment (OFE) market. The outputs include historic, current and future expenditure forecasts for 60 diverse oilfield equipment lines including blowout preventers, frac equipment, com-pressors, pumps, production trees and ESPs.
With a forecast through to 2019 and utilising a propri-etary methodology, DW’s World Oilfield Equipment Market Forecast provides granular analysis of a market which is ex-pected to steadily increase from $145 billion (bn) in 2015 to $180bn in 2019, after falling 19% year-on-year from 2014. The forecast includes a regional assessment of total OFE spending in addition to analysis of end users – break-ing out onshore and offshore spend by E&P operators and service companies & contractors. DW’s expenditure coverage includes, where appropriate, newbuild, mainte-nance and replacement expenditure.
Taking into account the latest macro-economic trends through explicit commodity price inputs to all equipment models – including oil price, steel price, global inflation and demand pressures – DW’s OFE forecast provides up-to-date analysis of one of the largest and most diverse markets in the oil & gas sector.
DW’s World Oilfield Equipment Market Forecast incorpo-rates a broad range of markets modelled including ROVs, helicopters, midstream, offshore rigs and floating produc-tion systems. DW’s World Drilling & Production Forecast (DWD&P) generates the wells drilled and wellstock forecasts which drive DW’s OFE forecast. D&P is updated quarterly, providing detailed hydrocarbon production and drilling data that covers 96% of global production. This
established foundation provides a base for the further modelling of footage, equipment fleet and the installed base for appropriate equipment, and is supported by DW’s renowned project-by-project data and models covering land rig markets, pipelines and offshore field development and operations.
The World Oilfield Equipment Market Forecast contains:• Oilfield equipment expenditure data – generated
in-house using models exclusive to DW; the OFE market forecast utilises DW’s own D&P models for wells drilled, footage and wellstock, in addition to a multitude of data sources including DW’s upstream & midstream construction data and rig fleet data.
• Full global coverage – the only product to provide regional analysis of the global OFE market.
• Detailed analysis – regional data and analysis of his-toric, current and future OFE spending by equipment in the onshore, offshore and midstream markets.
• Comprehensive experience – gained from 25 years of research, the forecast has been developed through extensive primary research and exposure to industry-leading M&A engagements as well as numerous diligence exercises conducted for oilfield equipment manufacturers worldwide, including in less visible markets such as Russia, Eastern Europe, China and the Middle East.
• Quarterly updates – for the highest level of accuracy, a subscription option is available for quarterly reports. DW’s models are continually updated, allowing for regular updates and detailed knowledge of expected trends in OFE activity.
• Contact us for analyst support – through DW’s network of global offices, DW can provide further regional specific information from local analysts.
