Responsible forest management in Stora Enso

• All fibre used by Stora Enso Packaging is legal, traceable, and sourced from responsible forestry

• Wood, our main raw material, is a renewable material if managed properly

• Sustainable forestry balances economic, social and environmental concerns to meet today’s needs while guaranteeing forests and wood for future generations

To demonstrate responsible forest management: • 100% FSC Chain-of-Custody certified fibre supply• 100% of our fibres are either FSC Controlled Wood or

certified

What defines sustainable forest management

• Binding– Forestry and environmental legislation– Other national regulations– Some EU regulations– International agreements (for instance Convention on Biodiversity, CITES

etc)• Voluntary

– Forest certification– Company policies and guidelines that exceed the legal requirements

• Stora Enso Principles for Sustainable Wood and Fibre • Procurement and Land Management

• Forest owner’s own management objectives• Local conditions

– Sustainable forest management can mean different practices in different countries/regions

Chain-of-Custody (CoC) certificationThe link from the forest to the end consumer

• The first link in the chain is always the Forest certification (FOR)

• followed by one or several further links in the “Chain-of-Custody” (CoC).

• Everyone who “takes over ownership” has to be certified (incl. converters etc.)

Sustainable forest managementFocus on biodiversity

• Ecological landscape planning• Identification and protection of key habitats• Protection of rare, threatened and endangered species and their habitats• Protection of water courses and riparian zones• Fire management• Retention of trees and groups of trees on harvesting sites• Protection of cultural sites• Promotion of environmentally friendly non-chemical methods of pest

management• Avoidance of oil spills and waste disposals • Natural regeneration of forests• Use of exotic species to be carefully tested and monitored• No or very limited forest conversion

Measures to improve biodiversity in northern Europe

• Boreal forest (Finland, Northern Sweden) – Restore fire regimes and fire-succession habitats – Increase amount of deadwood, large trees and late succession

stage– Increase proportion of deciduous tree species– Promote management practices that maintain or increase

continuous tree cover• Hemiboreal forest and nemoral coniferous and mixed

broadleaved coniferous forest (Southern Sweden)– Increase amount of deadwood, large trees and late succession

stages – Preserve veteran trees – Decrease nitrogen deposition – Promote management practices that maintain or increase

continuous tree cover– Increase protected forest area (with no or minimal intervention)

Stora Enso’s sustainable plantation management Southern hemisphere – Brazil, Uruguay, China

• Sustainable plantations are established on – Degraded lands – Converted from other intensive land uses– Not converted from natural forests

• Land ownership and tenure rights are important• Local livelihoods and socio-economic needs

– Planning with local communities and authorities– Engage local people

• Native ecosystems and vegetation – Ecological survey, mapping & management – Restoration of native forest

• Ecologically, socially and culturally important areas are identified and protected

Photosynthesis

• Plants absorb and transform CO2, water and sunlight into carbohydrates (cellulose) and oxygen

• Young trees absorb more CO2 than old ones

• For decaying trees, the process is reversed

• EU flagship initiative under the 2020 strategy• Decouple economic growth from resource use (land, material and energy) and

pollution (water, air and ground)• Which indicators to be used are still unclear, but is likely to reflect the areas above• Light weighting

– Stora Enso actively develops packaging board with lighter and stiffer characteristics to enable more packaging from the same amount of wood

• Energy efficiency– High share of bio-fuels used at our mills, e.g. Imatra mills: 84% and Skoghall mill:

91% (in 2010)– Continuous energy efficiency measures to reduce total energy need• Reduce emissions to water, air and ground

What does resource efficiency mean?

• The essential requirements of the Packaging and Packaging Waste directive (PPWD) sets design requirements on packaging, incl. material optimization and minimization of harmful substances

• Carton packaging can easily be material recycled, or energy recovered according to the CEN standards under the PPWD directive. Some grades are also compostable according to the same standards

• Efficiency of recycling depends on the infrastructure of national collection schemes and recovery systems

• Recycled fibre is a good raw material for new fibre based products, not waste• Stora Enso actively promotes and participates in recycling efforts and support the usage of

recovered paper• Stora Enso Barcelona operates a revolutionary UBC recycling facility, where fibre and aluminium is

material recycled and polymers are incinerated to generate heat to the mill

• Packaging is essential to enable transportation of products from producer to consumer

• A rightly designed packaging protects the product within, and thereby saves the far more valuable product from being damaged and thus wasted

Waste prevention

Air• Reduce SO2 emissions by 30% by 2013 from 2007 levels• Reduce fossil CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020 from 2006 levels

Water• Reduce process water discharge by 10% by 2013 from the baseline year 2005• Reduce Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) by 10% by 2013 from 2007 levels

Soil• Reduce waste to landfill by 5% by 2013 from the baseline year 2007
