3. U.S. helped Cuba fight Spain and battleships destroyed Spanish Fleet in Philippines. Rebels in Philippines fought with US for independence.

4. U.S. did not recognize independence and bought Philippines from Spain for $20 million. Crushed all rebellions but promised a slow transition to self rule. (Happened in 1946, almost 50 years later)
