World Environment Day celebrated at Tropical Forest Research Institute,

Jabalpur

Sensitizing on the theme “Beat Air pollution”, United nations proclaimed World

Environment Day was celebrated at Tropical Forest Research Institute (TFRI), Jabalpur.

Series of events were organized at the institute on 5th

and 6th

June 2019 by Dr. Avinash Jain,

Scientist and Program Coordinator. On 5th

June, various competitions like drawing and

painting, quiz and extempore speech were organized for school children, where they

enthusiastically expressed their creative thoughts related to environment, its protection and

combating air pollution. Dr Sumit Chakrabarti, Head Forest Ecology and Climate Change

Division showed audio video clips depicting importance of trees in fighting pollution

followed by awareness talk. Shri C. Behera, IFS, Head of Office, distributed certificates to

the winners and participants.

The valedictory ceremony on 6th

june was graced by Shri Rajesh Bahuguna, IAS, Divisional

Commissioner, Jabalpur; Shri Arvind Yadav, Joint Commissioner, Jabalpur and Shri S.N.

Diwedi, Regional Officer, M.P. State Pollution Control Board. Dr. Nanita Berry gave tour of

TFRI interpretation centre and arachnarium to the dignitaries.

Dr G. Rajeshwar Rao, ARS, Director, TFRI welcomed the guests and briefed them about the

mandate of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) for climate

protection and environment and association of TFRI with various PSUs and industries like

SAIL, NTPC, ADANI for upkeeping of their environmental responsibilities.

Shri Rajesh Bahuguna, Chief Guest, appreciated the institute’s efforts in celebrating the

landmark day for environment and spreading awareness among children and public. He

concluded by saying that it should be responsibility of individual and organisation to assess

their contribution in efforts to combat pollution.

Shri S.N. Diwedi, addressed the gathering on issues of climate change and global warming

and suggested measures like regular pollution emission check of personal vehicles, car-

pooling, composting of organic waste etc. He also claimed tree plantation to be the key

solution for the today’s crises of rising temperature and climate change across the globe.

Various scientists, officers and staff members of TFRI were also present during the

ceremony.

The program was concluded by plantation of saplings by dignitaries inside the TFRI campus

and distribution of saplings to farmers and children for plantation in their houses. The

program was compered by Dr Fatima Shirin and vote of thanks was extended by Dr P.B.

Meshram.
