ForewordI am pleased to lead a Nigerian Cashew Exporters Trade Delegation to Vietnam and India as part of a broader strategy to position Nigeria as a major supplier of Cashew. This first mission is crucial as Vietnam and India are the two largest buyers of Nigeria's Cashew. The delegation comprises Cashew Nut Processors and Raw Cashew Nut exporters as well as officials of the National Cashew Association of Nigeria, USAID-NEXTT and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has started implementing a Roadmap for the country's economic diversification – the Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP), developed by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment. The plan identifies 13 National Strategic Export Products (NSEPs), which include Cashew under the Agro Industrial Products. Owing to its geographical spread and high potential for export, cashew is a priority product of the government targeted at increasing Nigeria's foreign exchange earnings from non-oil exports. With this realization, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council is working with USAID NEXTT to fully maximize the potentials of the crop along its entire value chain. Issues that relate to its standards and quality are also being addressed under the arrangement. This year we will formalize our membership with the African Cashew Alliance (ACA) to enable Nigerian cashew become more competitive in the global market place.

In addition to increasing the potentials for foreign exchange earnings, the importance of cashew value is obvious as value addition in cashew creates jobs especially for women and youth, reduces rural poverty thereby creating inclusive socio-economic development.

We will also attend the World Cashew Conference in Dubai from 5 - 7 February 2015 to round off this mission. I am optimistic that we will build good trade partnerships and yield positive outcomes for the development of our cashew sector and non-oil exports.

Thank you

Olusegun AwolowoExecutive Director/CEO

The USAID Nigeria Expanded Trade & Transport (NEXTT), managed by CARANA Corporation and its consortium partners, is designed to promote inclusive economic growth and food security through implementing activities as part of an integrated approach to trade and transport competitiveness. The program builds upon Government of Nigeria (GON) and prior USAID efforts to stimulate investment in trade-related infrastructure and services – with emphasis on the transformation of the LAKAJI Corridor, an existing 1,150 km trade corridor running from Lagos in the South West, through Kano in the North Central Zone on to Jibiya in Katsina State into a free zone, reform trade policies and procedures, and improve the position of Nigerian firms to access global and regional markets.

NEXTT's corridor development work program activities will lead to further and lasting impacts in the form of reduced transport costs and increased speed to market, impacting food sufficiency as well as income and employment opportunities for Nigerians linked to agribusinesses exporting goods abroad. NEXTT embraces the pivotal role of women in the rural economy as agricultural producers, traders and entrepreneurs, and will consider opportunities to integrate gender into project activities and assessments across all components of its work, as well as promote women-led businesses and service providers for inclusion in policy advocacy and export promotion initiatives.

Within this Initiative, USAID is supporting establishment of a cashew processing cluster to catalyze investments along the corridor. Second, the NEXTT Project, the Nigeria Export Promotion Council, the National Cashew Association of Nigeria, and cashew industry stakeholders are working to implement a national cashew strategy that will chart a direction and focus for the sector. Implementation of the strategy will increase cashew processing by 50% within two years. Third, in partnership with the African Cashew Alliance (ACA), NEXTT is assisting cashew processors to acquire the ACA Quality and Sustainability seal. The ACA seal is an industry-accepted mark that confirms compliance with internationally-recognized standards of quality, food safety and social and labor standards. The seal increases market access for Nigerian cashew processors and as such more Nigerian cashew processors are working to acquire the seal.

Nigeria is one of the top ten Raw Cashew Nut (RCN) producing countries in the world. With a production figure of approximately 150,000 m/t, it is the 3rd largest producer in Africa after Cote D'Ivorie and Tanzania, and 7th largest in the world. (ACA) Cashew export is the third largest agricultural export foreign exchange for Nigeria. About $110million was earned by exporters from cashew exports in 2013, which represents about 10% of all agricultural export. In terms of processing, Nigeria process about 50,000 m/t, with export to Singapore, India, Vietnam, UAE, Hong.

Cashew Producing AreasCashew is grown in two thirds of the 36 States in Nigeria. The production distribution across the States are: Enugu, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi and Cross River States in the Eastern part of the country; Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and Ogun States in the Western part, as well as Kwara, Kogi, Nassarawa, Benue, Taraba, Niger and FCT in the Middle Belt and also Sokoto and Kebbi States in the North Western part of the country. The majority of export quality nuts come from the Western and Eastern parts of the country.

Cashew Season In NigeriaCashew nut setting begins in the middle of the dry season, while harvesting takes place mainly in February or early March. The entire harvest period occurs in approximately 16 weeks. In the Eastern and Western parts of the country, where quality cashew nuts are grown, nuts are allowed to drop to the ground before they are collected. After picking, the nuts are dried in the sun for 2 to 3 days, to reduce their moisture content to about 10%. Properly dried nuts are packed in jute bags and can be kept for 6 to 10 months.
