Welcome to our School

Cleveland Education & Training Centre (CETC) provides “catch-up‟ opportunities for at-risk students whose lives have been affected by unfortunate circumstances, and unwise decisions which have resulted in them undergoing periods in detention. When young people are brought to the Youth Detention Centre, most of them need support with their personal development and education. CETC staff endeavour to build trusting relationships with the students and encourage them to achieve success and develop self-respect. The students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own decisions to progressively acquire essential educational skills and knowledge, and learn how to mix harmoniously with other students and adults. With assistance, students develop their own plans to gain skills and complete certificates and qualifications which will help them gain employment. The Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women (CSYW) assist CETC with ensuring the holistic aim of all programs is to improve the life chances of students, decrease recidivism and to assist students to improve their literacy and numeracy skills.

On October 25th Cleveland Education and Training Centre celebrated the talent, compassion, creativity

and kindness of our teachers.

CETC support staff had the opportunity to thank them for the time they spend making a positive difference every day in the lives of our students. Of course, this meant food, and lots of it! With plates piled high and cake disappearing fast, it was an afternoon to reflect on how important our teachers are to the successful transition and well-being of our students. World Teachers’ Day was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank

all teachers for the important role they play both inside our class-rooms and out in the community. This year, World Teachers’ Day will celebrate teachers with the theme, “Young Teachers: The future of the Profession.” With a special focus on new and emerging young professionals, and their vision for a brighter tomorrow. We appreciate our teachers, and all that they do for our students and staff in the Centre. Happy Teachers’ Day!

FAMOUS TEACHERS

Oprah Winfrey always said that if she wasn't a talk show host, she would be a

teacher! She finally got her chance when she opened The Oprah Winfrey Leadership

Academy for Girls in South Africa. Oprah teaches lessons by using a web cam and a

computer. Other famous people who became teachers before they were stars include

comedian Billy Crystal, Spike Lee, Steve Miller, Gene Simmons, and Wyclef Jean.

Mr. T, Hugh Jackman, Sheryl Crow and Sylvester Stallone!

Born in Darwin, Danzal Baker grew up in the

Arnhem Land communities of Millingimbi and

Maningrida before studying at Shalom Christian

College in Townsville. Miss Lorraine, a former

teacher from Shalom, remembers Danzal well.

“He was the most focused, goal

oriented student I had. When he first

arrived at Shalom he didn’t like it, not

one bit, but he wouldn’t let anything

get in the way of what he wanted to

In Control &

The effervescent teen danced and sang his way into

the hearts of many in the Townsville community

before moving to the Aboriginal Centre for the

Performing Arts in Brisbane. He graduated year 12

in 2012, and performed locally to an ever growing

fan base, and soon it was his time to shine as Baker

Boy.

In 2017, he attracted national attention as the winner of the Triple J Unearthed

National Indigenous Music Awards Competition after releasing the singles “Cloud 9”

featuring Kian, and “Marryuna” featuring Yirrmal. In the same year, both singles

were featured in the Triple J Hottest 100 countdown of 2017.

He has performed at festivals such as Bigsound, Groovin’ the Moo Festival, the

Woodford Folk Festival, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, WOMADelaide, and Golden

Plains Festival. In 2018, he performed with acts such as Yothu Yindi and Dizzee

Rascal. His third single, “Mr. La Di Da Di” was released in April 2018.

On January 25th this year Baker Boy released his latest single “Cool as Hell”. On the

same day he became the recipient of the Young Australian of the Year Award. In his

acceptance speech, Baker Boy spoke about rapping in his Yolngu Matha language,

as well as English, “to honour and respect [my] culture and mark the importance of

the international year of Indigenous language”.

Baker Boy awarded Young Australian

of the Year in 2019.

“Because my ancestors are not the last

Australians, they are the first Australians,” he

said, speaking briefly in his native tongue be-

fore expressing his thanks in English.

“I see this as an important moment,

not just for me, but for my people

respecting the strength of our culture

and value of knowledge and power in

music and voices,”

“It has to unite us. This message goes out to

my fellow young Australians, Indigenous and

non-indigenous girls and boys in every corner

of the country. It’s important that, no matter

what, no matter the struggles and the pressure

society puts on you, stay strong, healthy and

positive, you will get through. Every single one

of us matters, our stories, our voices matter.

“With love and respect, we have the power to

shape the future. I’d love to see that change, I

think it’s really important,” he said. “I get to

perform in front of a lot of people, different

races as well. When I’m on the stage I use that

as a time to educate through music.”

Things aren’t slowing down any time soon for

the “Fresh Prince of Arnhem Land”. His new

singles “In Control” and “Cool as Hell” were

released earlier this year, and his Australian

tour will continue in 2020.

You can follow Baker Boy on Facebook for tour

dates and bookings.

C.E.T.C Book Review

Written by Jon Scieszka, “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” is a comical retelling of the classic fairy tale, as told through the eyes of the Big Bad Wolf. Not surprisingly, his version of how the tale unfolds is very different to that of the pigs’, and he’s not bad, just misunderstood! The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs is the chronicle of Mr Wolf and his quest for a cup of sugar. What begins as a normal day turns into a similar series of amusing, yet unfortunate events that shaped the classic fairy tale. This delightful story is a favourite among the students as they are remind-ed that things aren’t always as they seem!

“Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus!” This is the only instruction from the bus driver before he leaves the reader at the mercy of this quirky and charming little pigeon. Will you let him drive? Written by Mo Williams, this brilliant little book creates an interactive narrative between the reader (or listener) and the pigeon. In a witty to-and-fro, even reluctant readers are drawn into the pigeon’s quest to drive the bus. This story is a favourite among our students and teachers alike. Cleveland Education and Training Centre value the gift of literacy. It is a joy to experience our students discovering the rhythm of books and engaging with others about their favourite stories.

CLEVELAND STUDENTS TAKE THE RAAP Road Attitudes Action and Planning drive home important lesson about road safety

Deadly consequences: guest speakers Adrian and Michael

make an impact on Cleveland students.

Students at the Cleveland Youth Education Training Centre had some ‘real world’ realities explained to them recently by QLD Fire Emergency Servicemen (QFES), Michael and Adrian, when they attended the centre. They hosted the RAAP program (Road Attitudes Action and Planning), an initiative set up by the QFES. With over 20 years combined experience in emergency services, our speakers had the students highly engaged as they learned the true aftermath of the Australian Road Toll.

CETC students heard first-hand accounts from survivors and families of victims who have died on Australian roads. RAAP is directed at teens and young drivers as they prepare to hit the roads on either their Learner or Provisional licenses. The aim is to reduce the disproportionate number of young people killed on the roads compared to the overall population of drivers behind the wheel in Australia. The students discussed some of the major contributing factors to car accidents, and spent some time working on ways to be able to better stand up to peer pressure and make thoughtful decisions regarding their own actions. One of the most impactful moments of the program was when the young men watched case study videos of survivors of car crash tragedies. They witnessed the raw emotion and effect car accidents have on families who have lost young people on the road. CETC supervising teacher Mr. Joe identified the RAAP program as a small but valuable step in assisting the students in becoming safer community members.

Some teenagers and young adults can be more focussed on the “now” and “me”, and thinking about consequences of their actions is a skill that many are still grappling with. The RAAP presentation really seemed to resonate with our students and provided them some real life learning moments from people that were relatable, allowing them to feel the impact of reckless decisions.

CYTEC always appreciates collaborating with different community groups and organizations who can help assist our young people on paths towards becoming

Art with Heart

This term CETC art students and teachers collaborated with CYDC Programs and Cultural Health Education to raise awareness of Rheumatic Heart Disease. Each piece highlights the impact of this disease, and how easily it can be treated and prevented.

Once the pieces are completed, they will be displayed as part of a community exhibit before they are donated to medical centres chosen by the students, including Yarrabah, Cairns, Horn Island and Townsville.

RHD is a complication of Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF), and is most prevalent in rural, remote and indigenous pacific island and Maori populations.

ARF can be prevented by practicing routine hygiene practices, such as regularly washing hands and covering coughs to inhibit the spread of infection.

ARF begins with a sore throat. If treated at this stage, the infection will not progress. If left untreated, other symptoms will appear, includ-ing:

Fever

General feeling of being unwell

Painful or swollen joints

Chest pain, difficulty breathing or rapid heart beat

Jerky movements and difficulty walking

Easy Steps to Prevent the Spread of Acute Rheumatoid Fever

An example of students’ art work which will be displayed and then donated to a nominated medical centre to spread awareness of RHD.

Your Essential Guide to the

Silly Season!

Live by the list. Make a list and do the shop-ping a little at a time. Avoid impulse buys and don’t buy yourself anything if it’s not in the budget.

Count your blessings. Write them down, remind yourself daily that you have something to be thankful for.

Be Realistic. You cannot be everything to everyone. Don’t be afraid to delegate and share the load.

Have a pre-Christmas cleanup, things you may no longer need you can either sell online or swap for other things. This way, not only you can earn some extra cash, you might also find Christmas presents for your loved ones!

There are currently 78 people named S. Claus living in the U.S. -- and one Kriss Kringle. (You gotta wonder about that one kid's parents) Weight of Santa's sleigh loaded with one Beanie Baby for every kid on earth: 333,333 tonnes. Number of reindeer required to pull a 333,333-tonne sleigh: 214,206 -- plus Rudolph. To deliver his gifts in one night, Santa would have to make 822.6 visits per second, sleighing at 3,000 times the speed of sound. At that speed, Santa and his reindeer would burst into flame instantaneously!

Presents don’t always have to cost money – you can also give of your time or experience. Whatever matches your skill set and the time you have available. For example, offer to baby sit / give massages / service a car .

Christmas can be a lonely time for some people ; seek out community, religious or other social events so you can surround yourself with a community. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships.

Christmas this year for you might be away from the family or loved ones this year for various reasons. Please remember that it’s OK to take time to cry or express your feel-ings.Plus, you can’t force yourself to be happy just because it’s the holiday season.

Did You Know?

Just for laughs

What do you call a

Christmas Find-a-Word

The first artificial Christmas tree wasn’t a tree

at all. It was created out of goose feathers that were dyed green. The first artificial Christmas trees were developed in Germany in the 19th century, due to a major continuous deforestation. The feather trees became increasingly popular during the early 20th centu-ry and finally made their way to the US. https://www.pastbook.com/txt/12-fun-christmas-facts/

Ginger Bread Star-Tree A fun gingerbread treat to make with the family over the Christmas season!

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180C. Sift flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, spices and a

pinch of salt into a bowl. 2. Using an electric mixer, beat butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add honey and egg.

Beat until combined. On low speed, beat in sifted dry ingredients until mixture comes together. Divide dough in 1/2. Wrap separately in plastic. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, trace 19cm, 15cm and 10cm stars on to cardboard and cut out. For 7.5cm and 4.5cm stars use cutters.

4. Roll out dough halves between baking paper until 4mm thick. Using star templates and 7.5cm cutter, cut out 3 stars of each size from dough. Using 4.5cm cutter, cut out as many stars as possible from remaining dough.

5. Place same sized stars together, 3cm apart, on baking paper-lined oven trays. Bake larger stars for 8-10 minutes; smaller stars for 5-7 minutes or until deep golden. Stand biscuits for 5 minutes. Transfer to wire racks to cool.

6. Meanwhile, place eggwhite in a bowl. Stir in icing sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, un-til combined.

7. Once the stars are cooled, cover the top surface with prepared icing and allow to set. 8. Stack the stars from largest to smallest, using a small dab of icing to seal the stars

together, creating a tree shape. Allow icing to set before adding another star. 9. Leave tree to set for 1 hour. Serve dusted with icing sugar and sprinkled with silver

and coloured cachous.

Coolburra Cup Eight weeks after being postponed in Townsville, the much anticipated

women’s rugby league match for the Coolburra Cup Memorial Shield was

held on October 4 in Palm Island between the Palm Island Skip Jacks and the

Townsville Walkabouts.

This annual competition was founded in 2008 as a way

to bring Queensland and Palm Island communities

together through a mutual love of football. It is played

in honour of Palm Island Elder Uncle Bill Coolburra, a

soldier, Tunnel Rat, mentor and community leader who

was passionate about educating and encouraging

young people to live healthy, happy lives through sport.

It’s well-known that Uncle Bill was an avid supporter of

the Palm Island Skip Jacks, a club that is now more

than 80 years.

This year marks the 12th game between the two sides,

and the Skip Jacks were ready to use their home

ground advantage against the Walkabouts, scoring the

first try of the match. However, the Walkabouts

weren’t so easily beaten, and finished the day with a

14-4 victory. This continued their winning streak and

they took home the Edna Coolburra Plate, named after

Uncle Bill’s wife of forty-two years before his passing in

2009.

The history and intention behind the Coolburra Cup

celebrates a shared passion in our communities, and

the true meaning of mateship, sportsmanship and

mutuality.

It’s Christmas time again and it can be easy to forget the true meaning of the season. As we busy ourselves wrapping gifts and seeing family we often forget why we do these things. Christmas at its heart is the celebration of the Birth of

Jesus Christ, the everlasting and fulfilling act from a loving God. The coming of Jesus Christ is the true gift of Christmas given freely to all. So as we move closer to Christmas we should remember to love and support one another in our times of need, and to give freely just as we have received.

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a

Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11
