FTTH Technology: Multifarious Challenges and Innovative SolutionsRoom K 21

Organised by: Deployment & Operations Committee, FTTH Council Europe

In many countries, the deployment of FTTH is a fact. But, even these real-life FTTH deployment projects still encounter a number of challenging technical issues:

• Which technologies should be selected for both today and in the future?• How to plan the FTTH network with a highly techno-economic efficiency?• What innovative deployment methodologies could be used, possibly with existing infrastructure?• How to solve the last bottleneck – “fibre in the home installation” - in a quick and reliable way?• Which technical solutions are applied to provide service delivery, such as Video over GPON etc., over FTTH?

In this workshop, speakers with extensive experience with international FTTH projects will cover the above topics and much more. They will give in-depth views into the different issues and present appreciated best-practice technical solutions. The workshop encourages an open discussion with the audience.

Optimised Planning and Execution of FTTH Deployments: How to Increase the Success Rate of Your FTTH Project

Room K 11

Organised by: Alcatel-Lucent, Comptel, Comsof, GE Smallworld, iToolsOnline and TE Connectivity

Whilst the opportunities associated with FTTH deployments are now too big for most network operators to ignore, the benefits of solid planning and execution are often left unexplored due to timing or budget constraints.

Ill-prepared operators run the risk of overspending on both CAPEX and OPEX in the long run, due to poor strategic deci-sion-making, inefficient operational processes and low quality network documentation.

This workshop will show network operators how to avoid some of the main pitfalls of FTTH deployments and quantify the bene-fits (in time and money) of making the best financial and operational decisions at each step in the process.

12.00 – 13.00 Welcome Lunch

13.00 – 14.30 SeSSion 1:

Optimise your end-to-end FTTH roll-out using integrated design and build management solutions to maximise return on investment: Part 1. Project Management, Strategic & High-Level PlanningThis session will guide the audience through the first steps of the planning process. After introducing our virtual operator we will walk through the initial strategic decision-making process, demonstrating how different options can be evaluated and the right choices made. Once decided on where and how to deploy the FTTH network, we will setup the project plan to ensure optimal quality and performance management is maintained throughout the project.

Smart Cities and Smart Regions Need FTTHRoom K 24

Organised by: Smart Cities Committee, FTTH Council Europe

“Smart” is the actual buzz-word for policy makers that want to market their cities and regions as “intelligent & connected”. But a smart city or smart region connected by FTTH can make a real difference in services, applications and energy consumption. Smart traffic control and smart solutions that allow employees to work a few hours from home before leaving for the office can reduce traffic jams. Smart sensoring can perfectly manage energy consumption and provide security services for a better quality of life.

Join this workshop to learn about and discuss the real impact of smart cities and regions that are connected by FTTH !

Regulatory and Economic Challenges of High-Speed Fixed Broadband Networks in Europe

Room m 201

Organised by: Analysys Mason, Giessen University, and Huawei

The deployment of fixed broadband access networks is considered by policy makers as an important component of the industrial policy in countries that promote innovation. Fixed broadband networks have evolved over time and the transmission capacity that can be provided has increased. However, several countries in Europe have still not reached the level of deployment of fixed broadband access infrastructure made in other regions, such as Asia.

The purpose of this workshop is to contribute to the broadband debate in Europe by addressing a few key topics related to the roll-out of fixed broadband infrastructure in Europe. These topics are frequently discussed by policy makers, operators, investors, analysts and other stakeholders and experts.

Real World Lessons on How to Build the Right Strategy, Business Case and Deployment - What Works and What Doesn’t

Room K 16

Organised by: Ventura Team LLP

The workshops draw on experience from starting up our own operation in the ultra-competitive Swedish FTTH market (it was recently sold to TeliaSonera but was ranked #4 in the world for broadband service value and #1 in the Swedish market for open-access), as well as leading the work on the World’s first 1 Gigabit ‘everywhere’ incumbent network, creating multi-billion euro investment cases across four continents, planning/implementing millions of homes passed and creation of a mini-NBN from concept to implementation management. We’ll share what makes money and what doesn’t. We’ll also share how deployments lose money through bad decision making and focusing on the wrong things.

The sessions include discussion of some of the biggest errors and missed opportunities in deployments - as well as how you can change the rules in some deployments to create a viable business case in the toughest of situations. This learning also includes feedback from dedicated workshops for operators, regulators and investors as well as for the FTTH Councils in Europe and MENA.

The sessions will be highly interactive and participants are invited to share their own questions and problems with our team.
