ThisworkshopincludesallofthetopicsincludedintheLevel I lecture, as well as an in-depth demonstrationofactualrepairprocessesandtechniques.Daltonwillshowyouhowtocutabridge,refitfrictionpegs,andproperlyfixandsetupthesoundpost.
The presentation also will cover tips on installingstringsand tailguts,basicmaintenance, andpotentialrepair needs. “Quick-repair” of uneven nuts, bridges,and loose fingerboards will be demonstrated. Daltonwillalsocovergluingopenseamsandrepairingbrokennecksininexpensiveinstruments.
Students are encouraged to bring in instruments forclose examination and potential repair during theclass. If possible, depending on the class size and iftimeallows,studentswillhaveahands-onopportunityto“up”afallensoundpost.Coursematerialsandtoolswillbeavailableforpurchaseatthebeginningofclass.

Length: Three part, seven-hour course

This is a three-part course that covers the same materialas the previous levels except that the first three hours areessentially theLevel II course compressed intoan intensive3-hour segment. The rest of the time is devoted to acompletely hands-on intensive violin, viola and cello repairandadjustmentworkshop.“Firstwatch,thendo”isthebasicmethodforimpartingthemostcommonlyperformedrepairandmaintenanceprocedures.Theworkshopwillcoversetupandperformanceissues;fittingnewbridges,soundposts,andpegs; gluingseams;andchanging tailpieces, tuners, stringsandchinrests.Daltonalsowillcoversome“insider tips”onhow to achieve acceptable playing conditions in emergencysituations. Procedures for repairing broken cello and bassnecks and other stubborn and expensive repair challengeswillbecovered.
This isavery intensive, fast-paced,onedaycoursethatwillenable most strings teachers, band and orchestra directorstoacquirethebasicskillsnecessarytomaintainthestringedinstruments under their care. By the end of the day, eachstudent will have fit at least one bridge on either a violin,violaorcello.Additionally,eachstudentwillhaveresurfaceda fingerboard, re-cut and re-glued a nut, reset an existingsoundpost,learnedthebasicsofmeasuringandcuttinganewsoundpost,andentirelysetupaninstrumentbythemselves.
Kitchentableviolinrepairscanbeamessyprocess,sostudentsareaskedtowearclosedfootwearand“stainable”clothingorsmocks. Students or their sponsoring schools are expectedtopurchasetherequisitetoolsandcoursematerialsfortheirownpermanentuseandownership.Toolsandmaterialswillbeavailableatthetimeofthecourse.
Please Note:Becausethisworkshopinvolvesusingsharptoolsandmaterialsthat can be dangerous if mishandled, all participants will berequired to present a liability release form signed by both thestudent and a representative of their sponsoring organizationbeforestartingthecourse.Studentswithoutthereleaseformwillnotbeallowedtoparticipateinany“hands-on”activities.
This lecture provides an overview of the history andcareofstringedinstruments.Includedinthediscussionis an analysis of how violins, violas, cellos and basesare constructed including the materials used as wellas varying styles of construction, history, countriesoforigin, andhow thesevariablesaffect theneed forregularmaintenance.
The presentation will cover what common productsaremosteffectiveforthecontrolofhumidity,keepingthe tuning pegs working smoothly, and the basicsof soundpost adjustments, bridges, and the variousdifferent kinds of strings. There will also be a reviewof bows, bow maintenance, and differing styles andmaterialsinvolvedinbowconstruction.
Finally,therewillbea10minutequestionandanswerperiod that is open to audience discussion of repairtopics. The presentation also will include insider tipson shopping for instruments and an overview of theeffectoftheinternetonthemusicbusiness.
