ABOUT CPRICentral Power Research Institute(CPRI) was set up in 1960 by the Government of India to function as a National organization for applied research in power sector and to serve as an independent body for the testing and certification of power equipment. It is a premier research and testing institute in the field of power sector meeting the expectations of industries and the Nation. CPRI laboratories have modern testing equipment to meet the testing requirements as per National and International standards. CPRI also provides consultancy services on various needs of power sector. It has been extending its services for over five decades to the power sector in its quest for innovation, new product development, quality assurance etc. CPRI is accredited by many International bodies and test reports issued by CPRI are accepted at worldwide. CPRI is member in UCA IUG (Utility Communication Architecture International User Group), USA, DLMS UA, Geneva and others. CPRI has a vast experience and expertise in the areas of material characterization, simulation, diagnostic, calibration, system analysis and several other areas. The Head Office and the main set-up of the institute is at Bangalore and our units are at Bhopal, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Noida, Guwahati and Kolkata.

ABOUT POWER SYSTEMS DIVISIONPower Systems Division, CPRI is engaged in automation activities for about a decade. The division has established laboratories for Relays and Substation Automation. The Substation Automation lab is equipped with the facility for Conformance Testing of IEC 61850 server devices. The test facility is accredited by UCA IUG as Level ‘A’ (Independent Test Lab with certified ISO 9000 or ISO 17025 Quality Systems). Certificates issued by CPRI for IEC 61850 conformances are accepted worldwide. This division also undertakes consultancy on SCADA, DAS, Smart Grid, Protection Audit, Power System Studies, etc.

EVOLUTION OF SUBSTATION AUTOMATION SYSTEM

The evolution of SAS rests on the strong technological development of large-scale integrated circuits, leading to the present availability of advanced, fast, and powerful microprocessors. The result was an evolution of substation secondary equipment, from electro-mechanical devices to digital devices. This in turn provided the possibility of implementing SAS using several Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) to perform the required functions (protection, local and remote monitoring and control, etc.). Substation automation is essential in order to maintain an efficient and reliable electrical Infrastructure.

NEED FOR IEC 61850 STANDARD

As a consequence of SAS, the need arose for efficient communication among the IEDs, especially for a standard protocol. Specific proprietary communication protocols developed by each manufacturer had been used, requiring complicated and costly protocol converters when communicating with IEDs of different make.

The experiences had demonstrated the need and the opportunity for developing and using standard communication protocols, which would support interoperability of IEDs from different manufacturers, in an unified communication environment.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

CPRI is a leading provider imparting training and continuing education to the personnel of utilities and industries in the power sector. In this context, a three days workshop on “IEC 61850 in Substation Automation” is organised inviting International speakers and experts in the subject. This workshop is meant to disseminate the knowledge and experience in the field of Substation Automation and IEC 61850 protocol. The programme consists of lectures by experts followed by demonstrations, discussions and visit to the testing laboratories.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Most of the topics from Introduction to the in-depth of the Standard will be covered by Mr.Christoph Brunner during Day 1 & 2. Also, there will be other topics including the utility experience, Manufacturers experience and testing related topics covered by eminent speakers from the utility, manufacturer and CPRI officials.
