About the Workshop

This workshop will focus on the theoretical and the practical aspects of structural dynamics, structural health monitoring and energy harvesting using smart materials. In theory, the workshop will begin from the basics of single degree of freedom systems and take the attendees through complex multiple degree of freedom systems and introduction to the concepts of domain transforms, base isolation and transmissibility.In experiments, it will provide hands on demonstration of the modern tools and sensing technologies necessary for health monitoring/energy harvesting of structures. The concept structural health monitoring (SHM) has been rece iv ing cons ide rab le attention worldwide as well as India. SHM enables prompt identification and localization of damage before it attains serious level.

This workshop has been especially designed to cover the basic concepts and application of SHM based on the principles of structural dynamics with the aid of smart materials.

The speakers will cover a detailed introduction about structural dynamics, available sensor technologies (accelerometers, strain gauges, piezo - transducers and fibre-Bragg grating sensors), with case studies chosen across the world.The workshop will cover practical sessions for hands on experience of the participants with existing as well as the new sensing technologies developed by Dr. Bhalla's group in the Smart Structures and Dynamics Lab, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Delhi.
