Brief History of APEC Engineer

Year Activities

1995

APEC Leaders’ Meeting, Osaka agreed on a proposal from Engineers Australia, EA and Institute of Professional Engineer New Zealand, IPENZ on needs for mobility.

1996 January

APEC Human Resources Development, HRD Ministers met in Manila, Philippines.

1996 January

APEC Human Resources Development Group, HRDWG met in Wellington, New Zealand.

1997 JulyLaunch of the APEC Engineer Coordinating Committee

Attended the CBN meeting of the 36th APEC HRDWG in Ningbo, China to discuss a Concept Note on “Strengthening Mobility and Promoting Regional Integrity of Professional Engineers in APEC Economies-Workshop on Centralized Data Bank.”

A Concept Note, co-sponsored by 13 Economies, was submitted to the APEC Secretariat in July 2014

Approved in principle by the APEC Budget and Management Committee in September 2014

Proposed project is to conduct a two-day workshop to discuss the “feasibility and implementation of a centralized Data Bank on APEC Engineers”

The proposal was in line with the Joint Ministerial Statement issued at the 6th APEC HRD Meeting in Hanoi on 6 September 2014

The data bank will create a

framework of professional engineer

supporting system

to maximize the utilization of human

resources

to share technology available in the region

to shorten learning curves of skilled workers

in developing economies

APEC ENGINEERSAs of end of April 2015, more than 7,000 Professional Engineers from 14 APEC Economies are on the APEC Engineer RegisterThe 14 Economies are: Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, USA.Seven of the 21 APEC Economies have yet to join the APEC Engineers Register, including: Brunei Darussalam, Chile, China, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Vietnam
