BASQUIAT ’S DINOSAUR
Street Art is art that's created in a public space, sometimes without permission. It can be
made using a variety of materials including spray paint, house paint, stencils, posters,
installations and sculpture.
Jean-Michele Basquiat (1960 - 1988) was an American Neo-Expressionist street artist. He
incorporated many symbols and figures into his artworks, which often carried a political or
social message.
Left: Jean-Michel Basquiat. 1984. Self Portrait. [Synthetic polymer paint and oilstick on canvas] Collection of Yoav Harlap, Israel.
Right: Jean-Michel Basquiat.1984. Pez Dispenser. [Acrylic and oilstick on canvas].
ACTIVITY: Follow the step-by-step instructions below to DRAW your dinosaur. Then using
coloured pencils or textas, COLOUR in your dinosaur and then your background (you can
overlap colours and don’t need to stay completely in the lines - this makes your artwork more
expressive). Now WRITE your name under your dinosaur with a Copyright “©” at the end!
EXTRA CHALLENGE: DRAW your favourite animal with a grey lead pencil, then add some
elements of Basquiat’s style into your picture such as a crown your animal's head, repeating
words along the sides of the page, overlapping lines and colours, and your name followed
by a “©” at the bottom of the page.
