• What does USA PATRIOT stand for?

• This stands for United and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act.

Chapter Preface

• Supporters of the USA PATRIOT claim that with this act, tools are given to law enforcement to fight counterfeiting, smuggling and money laundering. Also this act gives the US intelligent community the ability to share information. It is a deterrent to potential terrorists because of penalties.

Opponents of the USA PATRIOT Act

• It defines terrorism in very broad terms so much so that it could possibly include anti war demonstrators, and citizens engage in civil disobedience.

• This act also lets the government detain and deport noncitizens.

• Government can conduct secret searches, for example looking into business records without evidence of a wrong doing.

• The government can eavesdrop on Internet communications.

• Question 1. The most troubling provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act are:

• the greatest threat to our freedoms is our own government.

• The Bush administration has overridden our constitutional liberties in the name of freedom.
