Burn-outs are a common worldwide problem and the number of cases continues to rise. It is time for action.

Elizabeth Nelson, PhD candidate Biomedical Engineering at the University of Twente, and Wouter Oosting, Senior Director Workplace Strategies & Design at CBRE, believe

that the business community plays a decisive role. It is not only the collaboration between science and business that makes this research special, the composition of the

Healthy Offices Reseach team is also a part of this. These different perspectives (neurocognitive psychology, biomedical

engineering and international economics) were combined for the first time for a holistic

study on the health of office workers.

OUTSMART YOUR COMPETIT ION IN THE WAR FOR TALENTWITH A HEALTHY OFFICEIn many sectors, the shortage of professionals with the right talent and skill set is greater than ever before. Companies are really struggling to recruit and keep talented individuals. CBRE places the working environment at the heart of this heated struggle.

Wouter Oosting:

”BE THE EMPLOYER WHO SAYS: YOU ARE INCREDIBLY VALUABLE TO US,

WE WANT TO DO OUR PART AND MAKE A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION TO YOUR QUALITY

OF LIFE. THIS INCLUDES A WORKING ENVIRONMENT THAT ALLOWS YOU TO BE AS

HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL AS POSSIBLE.”

Organisations rarely care for the health of their employees, just look at the number of employees with burn-outs and burn-out symptoms. We need to create a workplace where people enjoy spending time. Where they feel comfortable and have the opportunity of making healthy choices while at work, and where they can perform to the best of their abilities.”

2

In 2014, we already expressed the expectation that automation and the introduction of robots will eliminate the need for almost 50% of all professions. What remains are the jobs that require a lot of creative, social and emotional intelligence.1 These employees will, more than ever, benefit from a healthy, energetic and inspiring work environment.

HEALTHY OFFICE: WAY SMARTER THAN SMART

Combining data from activitytrackers and sensors allows us to personalise notifications based on behavior. For example, did you not sleep well? Then an app can advise you to work in a quiet area with plenty of daylight so you can concentrate better. And have you taken 1,800 steps today? Then you will get the advice to take the stairs or take a walking meeting this afternoon instead of sitting.

1Smartphones and activitytrackers provide a wealth of information about ourselves. This so-called Little Data, for example, tells us exactly how much we sleep and move. It also gives us the feeling of being in control of our own health.

2 Motion sensors analyse and optimise space usage and measure the physical activity of participants during the day.

The following visuals show the physical activity of participants at the beginning (left) and at the end (right) of the Healthy Offices Research period. The green dots show that, as the research period expired, participants moved significantly more.

3

Wouter Oosting:

“SMART OFFICES CONNECT BRICKS (BUILDING), BYTES (TECHNOLOGY) AND

BEHAVIOUR (PEOPLE). BUT WHAT DO ALL THESE SENSORS AND INTERNET-

CONNECTED DEVICES REALLY DO FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WORK AT AN OFFICE, EXCEPT MAKING LIFE A BIT MORE COMFORTABLE? IN A HEALTHY OFFICE, TECHNOLOGY IS

USED TO HELP EMPLOYEES IMPROVE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE AND GET THE

BEST OUT OF THEMSELVES.”

In a Healthy Office it is not only about the building or technology, it also addresses the needs of the people who work there.
