Engineering and innovation

Finding the safest, most effi cient and cost-effective temporary solution for a project is what we do best. Our dedicated team of engineers and designers worldwide cover a range of disciplines and are chosen for their ability to generate safe, innovate solutions that solve problems, pre-empt complications and ultimately save you money.

Innovations can involve new ways of using old methods, new applications for existing products, or something completely new and radical. Harsco Infrastructure has the global breadth to apply a solution developed in Prague to a project in Penang, with immediate cost savings and no ‘reinvention of the wheel’. The fl exibility of our product range increases our versatility, and we are always adept at fi nding practical, intelligent solutions for the most complex projects.

Using state-of-the-art technology including advanced CAD technology, 3D drawings, walkthroughs and prototypes you can be sure all eventualities are covered.

Examples of innovations and product developments can be seen below and on the next page;

One of the largest spans constructed in Europe– Completely free-standing 55m span scaffolding and roofi ng solution which imposes no load on the fragile building. Access scaffolding to the roof and chimney stacks is suspended, with no intermediate support, from the temporary roof beams. The base of the free-standing scaffold had to be supported on temporary concrete strip and pad foundations cast around the perimeter of the building.

Clear scaffold hoardings – To allow for easy inspection of the scaffold base and provide greater security in public environments. Purpose designed hoardings can be delivered to site, painted and fully constructed to customer requirements. The impact resistant and environmentally friendly hoardings are fi tted tight to the tower and are typically provided with inspection panels.

Bespoke solutions – A unique approach to problem solving is vital to Harsco Infrastructure. Extensive knowledge, an unrivalled product range and worldwide capability ensures the right solution can be engineered to suit the project and customer requirements. Utilising the full range of equipment enables Harsco Infrastructure to design bespoke solutions. Including engineering new uses for products and combining the range in situations where standard applications will not suffi ce.

Mesh deck for industrial applications – To allow air to circulate a sealed unit when removing asbestos lead paint, the mesh deck system also improves controlled de-contamination cleaning of the system after completion.

Standardised temporary deck – A solution which standardises a previously bespoke requirement for supporting temporary roofs or decks. This allows customers to reduce night works in sectors such as the rail industry by simplifying the design of the towers by using light weight, heavy duty components instead of traditional scaffold and allowing them to be built off site prior to works commencing.

Bridge solutions– Building a reinforced concrete arch to support a road deck required a solution to deal with very high vertical and horizontal loads. The arch and sloping soffi t required complicated formwork engineering to ensure the weight of the later pours would not pull the arch out of shape. Introducing horizontal props and running a frame analysis for every pour made sure that the loads going back into the arch structure at each stage were acceptable.

Ecommodation units– A temporary building that not only meets the zero-carbon requirements, but can exceed them! The solar-powered buildings are so smart that a new Energy Performance Certifi cate with a A+ rating had to be introduced to refl ect their effi ciency. Including a remote monitor and diagnostic system, they offer fast support and full data analysis of power use, as well as tracking for security. Meeting the latest in Government legislation and environmental regulations.

Insight onsite™

Power Station, Peterborough

Harsco Infrastructure devised an access solution for the painting of the main supply pipes to the cooling grid without affecting the normal operation of the Power Station. Access from below is made diffi cult by the fragile condenser panels which extend out at an angle below the pipes. Heavy scaffolding was also impractical due to the light-weight structure of the cooling grid which cannot support heavy loads.

Harsco Infrastructure’s solution was a pair of specially designed mobile steel gantries supporting conventional powered cradles. The cradles move both vertically and horizontally along the gantry, whist the gantries can be winched along the pipes on guide wires. The gantries are mounted on 2 sets of off-set, jack-up wheels which allow them to ride over the pipe ribs. The cradles can be lowered to the walkway at the base of the condenser panels for easy access. Once work on each pair of pipes is complete the entire gantry/cradle assembly is craned to the next row.

Jubilee Campus, Nottingham

To meet the challenging access requirements set by this eccentric array of angles for the University of Nottingham, Harsco Infrastructure used a mix of CUPLOK® and traditional tube & fi tting - the CUPLOK® being designed to cantilever towards, but not touch the building. Most notable, though is a specially confi gured mast climbing work platform. The building face has a 25° incline, and a required working height of 27m, which ruled out any form of scaffolding. However, Harsco Infrastructure resolved the problem by using a specially designed MASTCLIMBERTM - the fi rst time in the UK that the product has been erected for use at such a demanding angle.

A total of 21 mast climbing work platforms were used to clad the complex elevations and atrium. With masts up to 100m high, more than 3km of mast sections were used.

12

Victoria Hospital, Fife

Harsco Infrastructure specifi ed a series of scaffolding and access equipment services to contractors building the new 49,000 sq m wing to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife.

The eight-storey structure is notable for its elegantly curved façade enclosing an internal courtyard area. But while this is an important feature of the design, it represented a signifi cant challenge to contractors working on the project, including Harsco Infrastructure.

Harsco Infrastructure were required to install scaffolding to the building’s façade including the external perimeter, internal walls and lift shafts to permit the installation and erection of brickwork, masonry, cladding, curtain walling and render fi nishes.

Three different methods of access were identifi ed as providing suitable collective protection for this project and the most appropriate one selected before each section of scaffolding commenced.

Earls Court, London

In order to refurbish and reglaze the Victorian station roof, Harsco Infrastructure designed and constructed an access structure which spanned the four sub-surface railway platforms. Using a carefully selected range of scaffolding, aluminium beams, MKII soldier shores and steel beams, the completed structure allowed roof work to progress whilst the busy station operated normally below.

The project was erected during night time possessions with many of the materials delivered by train and erected using a mobile, track-mounted crane. Harsco Infrastructure’s designers worked constantly with the client to ensure that the supporting structure had minimal impact on passenger fl ow and posed no hazard to station operation.

Insight onsite™

Robert Clack School, Dagenham

A 1250 sq m, two-storey science block constructed from 36 modular bays designed to fi t onto an available plot in the school grounds was ready for occupation just 14 weeks after the order was placed.

The building included air conditioning, fume cabinets, gas supply, IT and data projection equipment. In addition to this, the building also incorporates a roof plant room, disabled access lift, large circulation area with double staircase atrium and a bespoke ‘gull-wing’ porch.

Modular construction meant that the entire building was craned into place over a single weekend, minimising disruption to school life.

Royal Sussex Hospital, Brighton

Harsco Infrastructure installed a bespoke two-storey modular building consisting of 26 bays as part of the redevelopment of the Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton. Strict space and time restrictions meant that Harsco Infrastructure had to design and install the building to fi t into the narrow space available whilst still leaving space for a fi re tender to access the back of the hospital, not to mention the building having to be complete and operational in just four months.

Measuring 32m x 9m, the new addition to the hospital houses 16 clinic rooms, a plaster room, large waiting area, admin and secretarial area.

The Hive, Manchester

The £11.5 million, 110,000 sq ft sustainable offi ce building in Stephenson Square is designed to meet the needs of a new breed of commercial market that demands low environmental impact and optimum fl exibility of tenancy.

Working directly with HKR Architects, Harsco Infrastructure engineers developed a design which optimised the TOPEC® panel layout and using a small volume of traditional formwork to express the structural grid around the column penetrations they successfully achieved the concrete quality fi nish specifi ed, where large areas of soffi ts were left exposed on the completed building.

Dearden, Southport

Harsco Infrastructure ensured that critical construction schedules were met on three wastewater tanks in Southport.

The three tanks, with varying dimensions up to a total diameter of 42m, needed to be formed in just 12 weeks to maintain the customer’s build schedule.

Harsco Infrastructure’s truly circular LOGIK® 360 panels were adjusted on site to fi t the radius for circular construction and, once the radius was set, pours took place at a rate of up to one a day.

The panels were adjusted for each tank and poured in two stages in height - the fi rst up to a height of 4.8m and then, once the panels were raised, the second level was poured up to 9.4m.
