Not getting a response from all the help-wanted ads and networking you’ve tried?

Maybe you should try some old-school job hunting. See, employees change jobs all the time and managers are always on the lookout for new replacements. The key is to contact the manager before she advertises the job opening and attracts all of your competitors.

Here’s the plan:

1. Start by assembling a list of 25 employers that you would like to contact this week. Include plenty of small, medium, and large employers. The idea is to target 5 employers each day, Monday through Friday. That’s 25 employers a week—100 a month. Small, medium, and large employers. The idea is to target 5 employers each day, Monday through Friday. That’s 25 employers a week—100 a month.

2. Visit each employer’s website and check their staff directories. You want to find the name of the manager in to find the name of the manager in the department where you would like to work. The department managers are the hiring managers for their department. If you want to work in the office, get the office manager’s name. In sales,

get the sales manager’s name. At a small business or practice, get the owner’s name.If a website doesn’t have a staff directory, call the company and speak with the receptionist who answers the phone. Receptionists are usually glad to help.Be sure to get the department manager’s full name with precise spelling, title, full mailing address, plus phone number and extension.

3. You’re going to mail each manager a letter and resume through the U.S. Postal Service. Unlike a pesky email or a text message, most people like to receive letters—and they do enjoy opening them. So, mail each manager a copy of your resume and a short cover-letter explaining what makes you different from all the other job hunters out there—are you a recent graduate? Do you have some special skills or accomplishments? Are you a hard worker who gives more than the minimum effort? Say so and ask for a job interview.

4. Now, if a manager hasn’t called or texted you after a week, call the manager to see if she received your letter and resume. Always be friendly and polite on the phone. Managers are attracted to friendly cheerful people and your voice

projects a personality. and polite on the phone. Managers are attracted to friendly cheerful people and your voice projects a personality.

• If a manager says she didn’t receive your letter, ask if you can send another. Be sure to confirm that you have her correct address.• If she says she did receive it, ask if you could schedule an interview. You could schedule an interview.

• If she says they’re not hiring, ask if you could check again in a month or so to see if things have changed.

• Next month, send another letter reminding her of your conversation and include another copy of your resume.

• A week later, call to see if she received your letter and resume Again, ask if you could schedule a job interview.

5. A polite persistence pays. A great salesman once told me that, “Most sales people move on after three or four contacts with a prospect. But it’s usually the fifth or sixth letter, email, phone call, or visit that gets the sale.

successstories

HUDGENS

THE CHALLENGE Brayann Hudgens dream had always been to become a Registered Nurse (RN) in wound care. After high school she wanted to start working towards her dream by pursuing the appropriate education to get her Associates Degree in Nursing. Finding an education program that suited her best was only half the battle. Along with that, she soon found out that the financial burden of going through education was more than she expected while supporting herself. Hudgens needed help. She was already familiar with WorkOne as she was involved in their youth programs while still in high school. Always knowing that assistance was there when she needed it, she kept in touch.

THE SoLUTioN Hudgens received three years of career counseling from WorkOne both during and after she completed her education for nursing. While she was working towards her degree she received financial assistance, tutoring, and supportive services to help her stay on track for graduation. She graduated from Ancilla College with an Associate of Science in Nursing. She took and passed the NCLEX RN exam obtaining her RN license just one month after gradu-ation. Finally, it was time to begin her search for employ-ment. Staff and Hudgens worked together on revising her resume, improving her interviewing skills, and job searching.

THE oUTComE After applying for and attaching her resume to open positions over several job search platforms, Hudgens fulfilled her dream of being an RN in wound care one month after she earned her RN license. She is happily working for Healogics as they go through the process of opening a new wound care center clinic at the La Porte Hospital. Hudgens was especially pleased with the staff at the WorkOne Knox office as the staff pulled together to help her live out her dream, “The staff were extremely helpful and nothing but respectful towards me. They were my extra boost when I needed it most.”

WETHiNGToNTHE CHALLENGE After working for the Chicago Tribune for 32 years, with the majority at 24 years spent as a Production and Press Supervisor, Mark Wethington suddenly became unemployed due to company downsizing. As a supervisor he was skilled in managing employees and improving production outcomes. His skill set was easily transferable giving him the opportunity to shift his job search to production and supervisor positions in manufacturing. There was only one setback for him. He had been out of the job market for so long that needed assistance with resume building and interviewing skills to get the type of job he was looking for. Luckily WorkOne was here to help!.

THE SoLUTioN Wethington worked with a Career Advisor to get a working resume together so he could confidently apply for jobs when the time came. Next, he attended an individualized workshop on “How to Get a Job in Manufacturing” to learn more about what local employers were looking for in potential candidates. He participated in mock interviews to improve his interviewing skills. Finally, it was time to get out there and find a job. He worked with a recruiter to begin profiling him with manufacturing employers while he also applied for jobs daily.

THE oUTComE Wethington applied for a few positions with different manufacturing companies to start off and had two potential offers within one week! He ended up accept-ing the position as a Shift Supervisor with ArcelorMittal at their Burns Harbor location. He started his new job at the beginning of May and is happy with his decision.

FrEibErG THE CHALLENGE William Freiberg never got the chance to complete his high school education. Instead, he had to quit school to begin working to help support his family. He worked odd jobs to provide a steady income. Sometimes Freiberg had to work jobs that were some distance away from his home or even out of town. As time went on he was able to find a job that provided him with the opportunity to complete training in Electricity and Auto-mation of Overhead Cranes. Although he landed a job that exceeded his expectations, he still felt something was missing. He decided it was time to get his High School Equivalency (HSE).

THE SoLUTioN Freiberg came to the Hammond Adult Learning Center where he continued working and attending basic adult education classes as often as he was able to. When he felt he had brushed up on the skills he needed he was ready to challenge the test.

THE oUTComE As of January 2018, Freiberg successfully completed the test and in turn earned his HSE. Aside from com-pleting his goal he also received a six thousand dollar bonus from his job for completing the program.
