    WORKING PROCESS IN WHEEL SHOP-

In the wheel shop the machine commonly used are wheel press machine, vertical

turret lathe, c.n.c surface lathe machine, bearing instructor machine ,etc .A

large section provides convenient open departmental storage for wheels ,axles

and shafts.Materials is handeled by overhead electric crane trucks through

doorways directly to boring mills or lathes for the machine work.Mounted wheelthat come from the truck overhauling or repair deparments are handeled by

overhead crane and enter and leave the section at the wheel lathe end.

While one wheel is bored another is picked and held in position by one of thecranes to be swung on the table of the mill, as soon as the boring of the wheel in

the wheel is completed the other jib crane with previously finished wheel in

suspension deposits it on a truck placed alongside.

From the boring mill, wheel to be mounted on axels go to the hydraulic press

machine. This machine is used also to press gear on and off. The double pressure

heads make it possible to dismount both wheels from a trailers axles without the

necessity of removal,, after one wheel is pressed of in order to turn the axel forpressing off the remaining wheel. In mounting wheels it is the practice to have

both wheels on the same axel of the same tape size. A special type of gauge isused for gauging wheels. It is possible to support the wheel at the rim for pressing

    off.

When the wheels removed from the trucks are received in the wheel shop , they

are checked carefully with gauges to ascertain dimentions and defects. Also check

the axles carefully and to measure them to determine whether truing up isneeded or not and also to make certain that the bearing fits on the trued up axlesare above the scrapping limit. The wheels are directly rolled into the position un

the lathe on a track. Each axle is carefully inspected and tested to detect any

minute cracks that would be liable to result in breaking later. To get an idea of

depth crack the axle was turned down to different diameter. After testing axles

with wheel mounted are stored on racks to keep them off the floor until they are

removed to other departments or shops for mounting in bogies.

New axles have bearing seats in the rough oversize when received from

manufacturers. They are turned and ground to accurate sizes in the wheel and theaxle department.Bearing fits are turned in the lathe to larger than standard. Then

they go to the grinding machine and are finished accurately to exact size. Asa

result of thethe use of these rapid production lathes the time necessary to finish

axles has been reduced to one-forth of that necessary with ordinary engine

    lathes.

    CONCLUSION

Railway being a very strict organization requires a very strict and effectiveadministration in its working railway workshop and more importantly a

mechanical workshop take care of proper functioning of the coaches and in turn

play a very crucial role in the safety of thousand of passenger travelling everyday.

Today railway is using different methods of testing and measuring which are

obsolete and less accurate. During our study project, we came across certain

irregularities prevailing in the workshop .
