Workhouse Arts Center Course Policies (Students should save this page.)

Instructors: Our instructors are professional working artists and educators with years of experience and education in their fields. For more information about our instructors please visit our website (WorkhouseArts.org).

Skill Levels: Classes are described by skill level, grade and/or age appropriateness. Skill levels include beginner, intermediate and advanced. Ages for youth classes are 5-15 unless otherwise specified. Young Adult is considered 16 years of age. Adult classes are for ages 16 and above. If your child has a special need or learning disability, we ask that you please notify the Education Department before registering. Dependent on the severity of the child’s needs, we recommend that a special needs child be accompanied by their parent or a guardian while attending a Workhouse Arts Center class.

Supply Lists & Materials Fee: Where possible, supply lists are kept on file at the Workhouse Art Supply Store. Classes and workshops will indicate a materials fee to be paid either at the time of registration or at the first class meeting.

Cancellation Policy: The Workhouse Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any class, workshop or camp that does not meet its minimum enrollment at least one week prior to the start date of the class or workshop. If a class, workshop or camp is cancelled, enrolled students are entitled to transfer to another offering without penalty (applying their paid tuition towards the new class) or may request to receive a refund. Please register early to ensure that your favorite class will meet enrollment minimums!

Important course policies below. Please read!

Class Refund Policy: Class refunds are given (minus $20 cancellation fee) if the refund request is made at least three days prior to the first day of a class. Refunds are not given after the second class meeting. There are special visiting artist classes that do not qualify for a refund. Those ineligible for a refund may request an acknowledgement from the Workhouse Education Department of a tax-deductible contribution in the amount of the unused tuition.

Workshop Refund Policy: Workshop refunds are given (minus $20 cancellation fee) if the refund request is made at least three days prior to the first day of the workshop. Refunds are not given for workshops if the student does not attend. It is not the responsibility of the Workhouse to accommodate individual student schedules. There are special visiting artist workshops that do not qualify for a refund. Those ineligible for a refund may request an acknowledgement from the Workhouse Education Department of a tax-deductible contribution in the amount of the unused tuition.

Late Enrollment, Transfer Fees, Missed Classes: A $20 registration fee will be assessed for any class, workshop or camp registration received after its first meeting. (Late registrations are only allowed for classes that do not have full enrollment.) A transfer fee of $20 will be assessed for each transfer from one class to another, unless the transfer was the result of a Workhouse administrative decision. All transfers must be made prior to the third meeting of the class. Should a student miss a class due to personal conflicts, sickness or prior engagement, the Workhouse instructors are not required to offer make-up lessons to that student. Neither the Workhouse nor our instructors are responsible for a student’s personal schedule and how that may affect the student’s class attendance.

Workhouse Policy: Students or participants enrolled in classes, camps and workshops are required to obey all safety standards and policies established by instructors and/or program directors. Some classes and media carry inherent hazards, which will be discussed by instructors before or at the first class meeting. The Workhouse is not liable for any personal injury or loss of property, including art work belonging to any student. No student will be denied admission on the basis of race, sex or ethnic origin. However, because of the need for group cooperation in classes, the Workhouse reserves the option of refusing admission to any person deemed incompatible with any class group due to disruptiveness, or for any impediment to the learning process of the group as a whole.

Weather Policy: The Workhouse Education Program follows the inclement weather policy for Fairfax County Public Schools. If FCPS has implemented inclement weather action, please check our website (WorkhouseArts.org), call the Workhouse Arts Center office line (703-584-2900), watch your local TV channel or listen to WTOP radio (103.5FM, 103.9FM and 820AM) for the latest in cancellations.

Workhouse Education Holidays: New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. These holidays, weather-related closures, or any additional days designated by the instructor may have make-up dates to be scheduled with students.

Payment Methods: Cash, check, money order, VISA, Master Card, Discover and American Express are all accepted by the Workhouse Arts Center.

An example of how to read our course listings1) In this example, "Young adults" are considered 16 years old. Please make sure to note the skill level and age appropriateness before registering for any class. Some classes specify age, some grade level, and some require both an adult and a child to register together.

2) The "(Meets in W-5)" means the class will meet in Building W-5. Please note the map to the left of this page to find your class building. Some buildings have multiple classrooms in which case the classroom will be listed as follows: (Meets in W-7, 702)

Save That Artwork!Did you know that each year the Workhouse Arts Center hosts a faculty and student art show? Students that have taken classes during the year are given the opportunity to exhibit their work in the main gallery! Artwork may be shown for sale or simply for exhibition purposes. All students and instructors that have attended or taught a class during the year are eligible to participate.

Rules1. Open to all 2013 Workhouse instructors, students and staff.2. No wet work.3. 2D work must be properly framed with screw eyes and secure hanging wire.4. All art must have a label attached with artist’s name, title, medium and price.5. Works that arrive damaged or do not meet the specified conditions for exhibition may be disqualified.

Helpful Tips for Website Navigation and RegistrationOnce on the website (www.WorkhouseArts.org), select Register for Classes. This will take you directly to the registration site.

If you are a returning student, simply select ‘LOGIN’ on the top right corner and enter your email address (username) and password. If you are new to registering online, click on ‘Create Profile’ on the right hand side of your screen. You will be asked to provide all the necessary information to create a user profile, which will include an email address to be used as your username. The password you choose must be at minimum 8 characters and must contain one number. Don’t forget your password! Once your profile is created and you have logged into the site you may begin registering for classes. To browse the classes in a given category, use the yellow category tabs on the left hand side of your screen.

Once you find the Class or Event you are looking for, you may purchase admission by clicking the “register” link. From there, you will be taken to a calendar screen and the website will guide you step-by-step through the registration process.

Be sure to check back often, as classes, workshops and ticketed special events are regularly added to the site!

Attention All Public School Teachers!Is it time to renew your Virginia State Licensure for Teaching? Did you know that the Workhouse Arts Center has been helping teachers earn continuing education units (CEU) towards relicensure since we opened our doors in 2008? Many of the weekly classes the Workhouse has to offer are geared toward the intermediate to advanced student and art educator. We understand how difficult it can be to find an inexpensive way to renew, so the Workhouse is now extending a 20% discount on all weekly class registrations for public school teachers. Let us help you earn points the fun, artistic way by enrolling in a weekly Workhouse Arts Center class today!

Rules:1) When a weekly class meets its minimum enrollment of four students, the discount of 20% off tuition can be awarded. The class must be a weekly class. This discount will not apply to workshops.2) The teacher must provide a scanned copy of his/her teacher ID card upon registration to qualify for the discount.3) Any teacher wishing to use a Workhouse Arts Center class as professional development points towards recertification must submit a letter of intent to the Workhouse Arts Center Education Department one week prior to the start of the class and have prior approval of his/her school administrator.4) Upon completion of the course, a letter explaining professional development goals met, and a receipt of registration will be mailed to the teacher. It is then the teacher’s responsibility to submit the letter to his/her school administrator for acceptance.

Creatively Fit Painting MarathonAll Skill Levels, Ages 10-14Instructor: Kathy StraussLet’s Paint Your Power! This class is a great vehicle for creating change about how people think about their own creative powers! The purpose of this creative marathon is to help strengthen our right brain muscle – our “creative body”, so that we can create the change we want to see in our world. It is also an exercise in letting go and accepting change. As we learn to have no fear on the canvas, we start making our mark, bolder and bolder, on the canvas of our life!During the course of this creativity workout, you will be given the subject or inspiration for your painting. You will be painting 9 new creations – each one building on the next – and each new piece will be created on the same canvas, painting one “mile” over the “mile” before it. Of course, for each new creation – a photographic record will be kept of it so you can track your progress. Just a note, for those participants that truly love the “painted mile” they created, they can start a new canvas for the next one. Introduction to Creative Model Building in Art and Architectural DesignBeginners (Grades 3 through 6)Instructor: Mikhail BolkhovitinovThe purpose of this course is to introduce model building as a universal design method in art and architecture. The main goal is to develop specific “dimensional” thinking through creative hands-on modeling experience. The course progresses from the building of simple abstract compositions to the construction of more complicated models like houses and high-rise buildings. All the models will be built of ready-to-use paper and cardboard elements, without using dangerous tools or equipment. Salt FreeYou’ll need to know how to cook without salt and what foods to avoid in order to regulate sodium intake. CeramicsThe Workhouse Arts Center Ceramics Program is a collective and highly dynamic environment with the goal of promoting Ceramic Arts through research, education and outreach. The Ceramics Program, housed in Building W-8, is a state-of-the-art, expansive, and open-aired facility with two indoor kiln rooms, an outdoor kiln yard with 32 cubic foot gas shuttle kiln, Raku kiln, spray booth, 21 Brent CXC wheels, a fully equipped raw materials lab with AMACO ball mill and blunger, a clay storage/mixing room with clay mixing equipment, slab rollers, extruder, extensive shelving and workspace for either hand-built or wheel-thrown work.

Our studio facility is also home to six private and shared resident artists’ studios and a retail gallery for the exhibition and sale of Resident and Associate artist works. As a part of our commitment to the promotion of artistic and cultural creativity, the Ceramics Program at the Workhouse Arts Center offers students the opportunity to learn more about studio practices, studio management and the ability to increase their technical knowledge by participating in the Workhouse Ceramics Work Study Program. This program involves training in various areas of our ceramic studio operations for beginning through advanced students wishing to help with daily operational activities in exchange for open access to the studio during non-class times and/or tuition reductions.

Beginning CeramicsClasses for students who have no previous clay experience or would like to extend their basic skills. Students will be taught how to create basic cylindrical and bowl forms through the instruction of either hand-building and/or wheel-throwing techniques. Focus will be on process and the enjoyment of exploring, working and creating with your hands in clay. (Ages 17 and older)

Intermediate CeramicsClasses for students who already possess the basic hand-building and/or wheel-throwing skills and are able to move on to more complicated forms. This class is designed to encourage students to perfect their sense of craftsmanship and continue exploration and use of various surface decoration and firing techniques. (Ages 17 and older)

Advanced CeramicsThis class is designed for students with advanced hand building and wheel throwing skills that would like to increase their technical, firing and surface decorating knowledge. Focus will be on the continued development of design, with either functional or non-functional forms, as well as construction, glazing and firing processes to bring forth their own ideas, influences and personal style. (Ages 17 and older)

Ceramic SculptureAll Skill LevelsStudents of all skill levels will learn to use clay construction techniques including pinch, coil, slab, press mold, extruding and surface enrichment to create ceramic sculptures. Students will participate in critiques and study the styles of contemporary ceramic sculptors. Focus will be on expressing ideas through handbuilding in clay and developing a personal style.

Wheel-ThrowingAll Skill LevelsWheel-throwing involves the use of the potter’s wheel as the tool of choice for creating vessels or objects in clay, whether functional or non-functional. Students are encouraged to create a variety of forms from basic cylinders and bowls to more complex forms (i.e., mugs, pitchers, casseroles and teapots).

Hand-BuildingAll Skill LevelsTry a totally low-tech approach to clay with a handbuilding course. Students will explore all aspects of hand-building from primitive pinch pots and coil building to slab work and extrusions. Students will learn to create simple to complex forms, as well as various decorating and surfacing techniques.

Surface It! Surface Decorating WorkshopsAll Skill Levels, Ages 16 through AdultInstructor: Resident or Visiting Artist

These workshops are for anyone 16 years of age or older interested in expanding their experience or knowledge of various surfacing techniques. Workshops are offered in China Painting, Ceramic over-glazes, slip decorating (leather hard or greenware pieces required), brush-making or use of non-traditional surfacing materials on clay. Students will also be provided with information on the history of the subject; resources for any technique or materials used and access to reference materials for use in planning their piece. All skill levels of potters, hand-builders, sculptors, painters or china painters are welcome. Perfect for K-12 teachers for professional development. Class limited to 12. Open StudioRegistered Students OnlyCome work side by side with friends and classmates. This open studio is designed to allow students to practice, trade ideas and create in a relaxed, social atmosphere. Students must be currently enrolled to be eligible for open studio use. With more than 20 hours per week dedicated to Open Studio, students are sure to find the right time to create!

Raku Firing WorkshopsGet fired up (!) for a great time and learn all aspects of the Raku Firing process at the Workhouse Ceramics Studio. Workshops will be led by a Workhouse Ceramics Instructor and/or guest artist(s).

Requirements: 7-9 pieces of pre-fired Bisqueware. Participants must wear proper clothing consisting of long sleeves, long pants, closed-toed shoes and long hair tied back.

Cost: $80 for all, no discounts. Cost includes use of glazes and firing(s).

Flame WorkingOpen Studio All Skill LevelsMust be enrolled in a Glass class to participate.Come work with friends and classmates of all levels and trade ideas in a social atmosphere! Participants must be currently enrolled, have a basic knowledge of flame working and be able to work independently on a dual-fuel torch. Students will learn to test tile and other tesserae to determine feasibility for exterior application. Direct Set MosaicsExperienced Beginner, Young Adults & AdultsInstructors: Bonnie FitzgeraldUpcycle. Repurpose. Green art. Using collections of natural and man-made materials you are guided through the creative and technical process to embed materials into a setting bed. This is a wonderfully spontaneous and freeing approach to mosaic creation. Works are not grouted. You will learn about preparing your various materials, nipping, cutting and tool use, good design methods and technical considerations. Site Specific Fine Art Photography Workshop SeriesIntermediate to Advanced Photographers, AdultsInstructor: Craig RudlinTake your camera on the road for a photographic adventure, discovering new perspectives alongside seasoned fine art photographer Craig Rudlin. Designed for intermediate to advanced photographers, these weekend trips adapt each itinerary to help you create fine art photographic images. We arrange special photo shoots designed to help you capture the essence of the site. The series combines discussions on technique and edit-and-critique sessions with photo shoots in the field. Every month a new site is chosen to visit. Sites could include but are not limited to the Workhouse Arts Center grounds and buildings, Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Old Truck Depot, Weston Psychiatric Hospital and more.

Fall-Spring Sessions: One weekend a month you will travel to a site-specific photographic location and shoot all day. Approximately one to two weeks following that trip you will reconvene at the Workhouse Arts Center for a presentation, edit and critique session. Schedule is subject to change. This is mind-body medicine in a nutshell.Today, there is renewed interest in age old traditions such as yoga and meditation. No longer viewed with suspicion, mind-body programs are now established at prestigious medical schools in the United States and around the world.

Classes in this program follow continuous eight week sessions, and most classes may be joined at any time- no need to wait for the next session to begin! There are classes for all ages, and since most classes are self-paced they are appropriate for all skill levels. New classes and workshops are always being added and the schedule may change every eight weeks. Designed as an ongoing practical forum for master teachers, researchers and movement artists to share the wealth and depth of knowledge that is found in historical traditions and fight techniques from around the world. The intent is to develop a physical journey while exploring the creation of a “collective educational format” that will serve the project participants through personal growth, scholarship, technique and process. Art of MovementYogaHatha yoga focuses on asanas, or poses. A person who practices yoga goes through a series of specific poses while controlling his or her breathing and incorporates meditation and relaxation. Yoga improves flexibility, strength, balance, stamina and mental clarity, while reducing anxiety and stress. Yoga is about creating balance in the body through developing strength, flexibility and the mind-body connection.

Gentle YogaA chair based low impact yoga that improves strength and coordination in the body. It is appropriate for any type of mobility, whether wheelchair or ambulatory.

PilatesPilates is a unique workout that focuses on core stability while using controlled movements to condition the body. Emphasis is placed on breathing and quality of form. While abdominal and postural muscles are strengthened, the body also improves in flexibility. Regular practice of Pilates exercises dramatically improves strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, posture and the mind/body connection.

Gentle PilatesGentle Pilates is a chair based low impact movement that will benefit posture and alignment in the body. This class is appropriate for any type of mobility, whether wheelchair or ambulatory.

Strong, Graceful BodyDesigned for the student, fusing training techniques with traditional movement disciplines such as Pilates, Yoga and fitness. A fun, invigorating workout to develop core strength, muscular endurance, dynamic balance and flexibility without the use of equipment. This class keeps you moving and motivated with amazing music. It's a body blasting workout that leaves no muscle untouched.

Tai Chi (yang style)Tai Chi is a self-paced system of gentle exercise with stretching using Qigong “Eight Pieces of Brocade” as part of the warm-up. Tai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion” because it promotes serenity through, while reducing stress. Anyone, regardless of age or physical ability, can practice Tai Chi. You will learn Tai Chi 24 Movement, 8 Movement, 32 Movement, 8 Pieces of Brocade (Qigong) and Tai Chi Fan.

Nia “Nia” (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) is a fusion of movement that draws upon the expressiveness of dance, the martial arts, and the healing arts. Nia delivers cardivascular and whole-body conditioning, modern dance mized with heart-pumping karate kicks and subtle therapeutic suggestions and visualization techniques helping you develop awareness and heighten sensation.

Hulau Hula O Ke Anuenue Punahele(Hula Instruction)The student learns to appreciate hula, music, history, culture and traditions. Hula embraces the physical, mental and emotional aspect of the dancer. The cultural history of each mele (song) will be discussed, emphasizing on how background is embedded in the dance vocabulary and style.

Children's HulaHula classes for children (keiki) from ages 3 to 15 years old. New students must be able to participate in the class by themselves. Basic hula steps and hand motions are taught separately, using Hawaiian language words, games and chants to focus and practice. Hawaiian stories and sometimes crafts are incorporated to learn about the Hawaiian culture. We have a circle time for getting to know all hula sisters and brothers, and learning Hawaiian language and songs.

Hula Hoop Fitness Hooping is a total body exercise that focuses on strengthening core muscles, toning arms and legs and providing a cardiovascular workout that can easily burn 200 calories in 30 minutes!

Ballroom Learn how to cha-cha, waltz, foxtrot, swing and more! Learn the first five basic steps of each dance in the beginning ballroom and then learn the rest of the steps in intermediate ballroom. Feel your confidence grow as you move, step, swirl and spin around the floor! This is a great class for singles, couples beginners or those who need a refresher!

Pilates BarrePilates Barre is a beginner/intermediate class. This class combines the principles of Pilates & Ballet Barre work to ensure that you gain an awareness of your core and body alignment. The Ballet Barre and Pilates Props are incorporated into a flowing movement routine to challenge your strength and stability while increasing stamina and flexibility. Pilates Barre is a great way to add variety to your Pilates and Ballet routine while toning your entire body.

Zumba! An exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired calorie-burning dance fitness program. Zumba has become a global phenomenon with more than 12 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages joining in on the fun. Private Pilates ClassesThe Pilates studio features state of the art equipment from Stott Pilates. A series of 500 resistance exercises are performed on Stott Pilates V2Max Plus Machines, Barrels, Cadillac, Spine Corrector, Stability Chair and an array of small equipment. With the Pilates emphasis on core strength and precise form, these effective pieces of equipment help the body move more efficiently.

*Before a NEW student can register for a Pilates Equipment class, they must take one 55 minute private lesson which will include the following:•Static or Dynamic Postural Analysis•Introduction to Pilates Basic Principles •Introduction to Equipment and Basic Workout

After the client’s first session, a specific exercise program will be written for them for the following sessions. This program will be monitored and changed as the client progresses. At any point in time you may ask for a static analysis or movement analysis to compare progress.
