WORKER EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM

To provide safety and health training that is both site specific and trade-specific in view of the fact that DOE sites are complicated, featuring a combination of nuclear, industrial, demolition, and construction activities

To ensure that DOE site workers are prepared to work safely in hazardous environments

To provide workers with sufficient knowledge to identify hazardous situations and to take appropriate actions to protect themselves, fellow workers, and the environment.

WORKER EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM

DOE/NIEHS Training Delivery

• Over 30,000 DOE workers are now trained annually at over 30 cleanup sites

• Last year nearly 8,000 workers trained at both Hanford and Oak Ridge; 4,000 at Los Alamos; 1,400 at both INEL and Paducah; and 1,200 at Savannah River

• Wide range of hazardous waste & emergency response classes offered

• Across the DOE complex 5,764,681 contact hours of safety and health training were delivered by the NIEHS/DOE awardees between 1993 and 2011.

• Awardees trained 421,741 workers and presented 29,722 classroom and hands-on training courses.

• In 2010-2011, 31,236 workers received 405,556 contact hours of training in 1987 classes.

Though training was conducted at 30 different DOE sites in 2010-2011; it was concentrated at:

Hanford (25%)Oak Ridge (25%)Los Alamos (12%)

Savannah River Site, Idaho Falls, Paducah and Nevada Test Site (4%)

What is a Trainers’ Exchange?

WORKER EDUCATION AND TRAINING PROGRAM

• DOE/NIEHS Trainers Exchange – Knoxville, TN May 7-8, 2012

• Goal: To share best practices and new techniques, to increase training effectiveness across the DOE complex through a series of workshops conducted by the trainers themselves.

• Trainers from the eight consortia, funded by NIEHS through the DOE Nuclear Worker Training Program, as well as partners including the DOE Hammer Training Program at Hanford led four workshops blocks— advanced training technologies, instructor development, training challenges, and technical updates.

• Approximately 18 different Instructor development workshops provided up-to-date information about recent changes in training requirements, and other pertinent trends and issues related to safety training at DOE sites.

• Significant attention was allotted to discussions and exercises related to hazard identification, systems of safety, the hierarchy of prevention and control, and strategic preventative measures to address areas of concern.

DOE NTC/NIEHS Collaboration Update

• Radiation Worker Training Reciprocity Program

– Voluntary program for the acceptance of radiological training

– Centralized through the DOE National Training Center (NTC)

– Infrastructure, processes, and procedures to provide reciprocity of RWT (I and II core modules) for participating sites

• Global Harmonization of Training Curricula

– Improve Hazcom training to include modules for workers on GHS at DOE sites
