There are, however, a few guidelines you can follow to make yours look more artful than accidental. Because your recycled finds are likely to vary in size, try making cardboard scale models, so you can experiment with fitting everything together. A couple of years ago, this was a typical closed-off 1930s kitchen. But Dutch architecture firm i29 was given a brief: incorporate the kitchen into the living area, while adding lots of working and storage space. The results are striking, but practical. Cutaway cabinetry stores everything it needs to, while making items easily locatable. Of course, glass would have achieved the same thing – but where would the fun be in that?

When the architects at Bratislava-based Gut Gut were faced with this tiny kitchen, shelving and cabinetry quickly became their primary concerns. This cute and compact bench system from Ikea fitted the space perfectly – while distracting features like handles were replaced with cutouts to prevent the room from looking smaller.

mOdeRn family The family kitchen doesn't have to revolve around a big wooden table.

This Robin Caudwell design, which won the NKBA Supreme Kitchen Design Award last year, is a case in point. The blackboard wall is well used by the whole family – as is the table. Dropping down from the island bench, it allows for simultaneous cooking, eating and catching up better than a heavy oak dining slab ever did.

6mOdeRn glamOuRLuxury is making a kitchen comeback. Brass, bronze and gold fittings, marble, and two-pot lacquer finishes are all creeping into the home's

prime congregation area. Add some glossy black or glass mosaic tiles, stainless-steel appliances, and a gooseneck tap, and you can achieve an opulent aesthetic without spending a fortune. Finally, a glass-topped table will balance out all the black and metal, preventing your kitchen from looking too heavy.

markets; nights scouring TradeMe; afternoons shoving it all into cupboards. Get around this nonsensical, yet all-to-common occurrence, by spending a bit more time out there looking for great shelves. Group your favourite possessions into collections, based on a theme, colour, or just because they work well together, then stand back and let your treasured finds be appreciated.

THe MINIMuM PAyMeNT TRAPWant to get out of debt in the most expensive way possible? Just make the minimum repayments on your credit card bill every month.

Here's a crazy suggestion: Don’t even look at the minimum payment required on your mortgage or loan. Why not? Because even though it tells you the least possible payment you can get away with, it’s the worst possible thing you can do for your financial future.

This is due to a little known psychological trick called 'The Anchoring effect'. This phenomenon is when people rely too heavily on the first piece of information offered – 'the anchor' – then they use this information as the basis for subsequent judgements.

Don't let them fool you. Professor Neil Stewart of the university of Warwick, recently conducted a study of credit card borrowers who don’t normally pay their balances in full – and the results were illuminating. Those who were shown a credit card statement without a minimum amount to pay, actually chose to pay 70 percent more than those shown the minimum payment owing. Showing minimum repayments incites borrowers to pay over four times more interest over the life of their debt.

Minimum payments aren’t designed to help you out. When you owe them $5,000 and they're only asking for $50, they seem like good guys. But banks aren’t socially responsible institutions – remember, they exist to make money. This is why banks shifted the standard mortgage terms from 20 to 25 years – and now to 30. Lengthened term = increased profits.

So what should you do? Get a financial plan and some advice on your position. Just being aware of your bank's strategies will better equip you to get yourself out of debt.

5 COlOuR On COlOuRPainting cupboards and walls differing shades of the same colour is becoming an increasingly popular way to add interest and depth to your kitchen. Rather than paint an area the same shade, think about striping your favourite hues down your walls – or painting your kitchen cupboards each a different, but complementary, colour.

Be careful when trying to match colours in different materials – glossy surfaces, such as laminated cabinetry, will reflect more light and look different to low-sheen painted surfaces. Sometimes it's better to select a different tone, rather than trying to create an exact colour match. Choose paints designed for kitchens, such as the Resene Kitchen & Bathroom range with anti-bacterial silver and MoulDefender; Resene Imperite for your splashback colour; and Resene ArmourCat for your cabinetry. Another good idea when it comes to painting your kitchen, is to coat one wall in Resene Write-on Wall Paint over your chosen paint colour. This will give you a whiteboard-style finish for writing shopping lists and notes. resene.co.nz
