Work Safe rules

incidentsoccurredwithinVanOord.Themajorityoftheincidents
wererelatedtothesubjectscoveredbytheruleslistedbelow.

ThebelowgroundrulesaremandatorytoallVanOordpersonnel
andsubcontractorsworkingunderVanOordmanagement.
Theymustbeadheredtoatalltimes.
How to start?
Before you start any activity, ask yourself:
-DoIknowwhatisexpectedfromme?
-Havetheinvolvedrisksbeenassessedandistherea
WorkSafesystem?
-DoIhavethecorrecttraining?
-DoIhavethecorrectauthorisation?
-DoIhavetherighttoolsandequipmentandaretheyin
goodconditionandcertifiedwhererequired?
-DoIhavethecorrectPPE?
-DoIknowwhattodoinanemergency?
When changes occur:
-Stopwhatyouaredoingandre-assesstherisksinvolved.
If you cannot comply with a Work Safe rule:
-StopwhatyouaredoingandtellyourSupervisororManager.
Boat-to-boat transfer
Do not transfer from boat-to-boat, unless:
-Allotheroptionshavebeenruledout.
-Youfeelpersonallysafetoperformatransfer.
-YouweartherequiredPPEwithasaminimumlifejacketorworkvest.
-YouunderstandtheWorkSafesystemfortheactivity.
-Youshouldkeepyourbothhandsfreetograspladder,rung
ornets(whateverisprovidedtoboardthevessel).
-Donotcarryanyluggagewithyouduringtransfer.
Working with hands and hand tools
Do not work with your hands or hand tools, unless:
-Yourhandsareprotected-usethecorrecttypeofglovesto
protectyourhands.
-Thecorrecthandtoolforthejobisselected.
-Toolsareinspectedforuse.
- Jewellery(e.g.rings,bracelets)hasbeenremoved.
-Looseclothingiseithernotwornorisproperlysecured.
Do not:
-Cleanawayswarfwithyourbarehands.
-Attempttobypasssafetyguardsonthehandtools.
-Useknives.Ifyoumustuseaknife,dosoonlywhereabsolutely
necessary(e.g.rigging,catering)andonlythecorrectoneforthejob.
Driving a vehicle
Do not drive a vehicle unless:
-Thespecifieddailycheckshavebeencompletedanditissafe
tooperate.
-Seatbeltsarewornbyalloccupants.
-Peoplearephysicallyseparatedfromunsecuredmaterial
andequipment.
Do not:
-Useahand-heldphone.Alsolimittheuseofhands-freephones
whilstdriving*.
-Leavetheignitionkeyinanunattendedvehicle.
-Breaktrafficrulesorspeedlimits.
-Approachavehiclewithoutmakingeyecontactwiththeoperator
toestablishitissafetodoso.
-Driveafterlongorexhaustingtravel;instead,useeithera
companydriverorarecognisedtaxiservice.
Do:
-Parkyourcarinreverseattheworkspotbutatasafedistance.
*Clientrequirementsmayevenforbidtheuseofhands-freephones.
Entering and working in a confined space
Do not enter a confined space unless:
-Allotheroptionshavebeenruledout.
-Youhavebeenissuedwithapermittowork.
-Youunderstandtheworksafesystemfortheactivity.
-Rescuemeasuresareinplace.
Working at height
Do not work at any height where there is a risk of
injury from falling unless:
-Allotheroptionshavebeenruledout.
-Riskshavebeenassessed.
-YouhaveaWorkSafesystem.
Never work above two (2) metres* unless:
-Youhavefallpreventionorprotectionmeasuresinplace.
-Youwearasafetyharnessfastenedtoasuitableanchorpointif
theactivityrequiresit.
-Rescuemeasuresareinplace.
*Heightmaydifferbasedonlocallegislationand/orClientrequirements.
Energy and machinery isolation
Do not work on equipment unless:
-Youhavesecurelyisolatedtheequipmentusinglock-out/tag-out.
-Youhavecheckedthattherightpieceofequipmenthas
beenisolated.
-Anystoredenergyhasbeensafelyreleased.
-Equipmentthatcouldmovehasbeensecured.
-Lock-out/tag-outpermitisinplacefornon-routineactivities.
Ensure that all guards and safety systems are put back
when the work is completed.
- ‘Live’workingisnotpermittedonelectricalsystems.
Mechanical lifting and pulling
Do not operate any lifting equipment unless:
- Ithasbeenapprovedforuse.
-Thelift/pullhasbeenassessedbyacompetentperson.
-Theloadhasbeenslungbyacompetentperson.
-Theloadiswithinthecapacityoftheequipment.
-Allsafetydevicesareworking.
-Ataglineisused.
-Liftingpermitisinplacefornon-routinelifts/pulls.
Do not:
-Movealoadabovepeople.
-Positionyourselfbelowasuspendedload.
-Positionyourselfnearwiresundertension.
Working above or near water
Do not work where there is a risk of falling into water, unless:
-Allotheroptionshavebeenruledout.
-Youcanswimandyouarewearingabuoyancyaid.
-Youhavenotifiedyoursupervisor.
-Thereissomeonewhocaninitiatetheemergencyprocedure
shouldyoufallintothewater.
Definitions
Risk assessment
Identifyingthehazardsandevaluatingtheriskforeachhazardfor
theworktobedone,andputtingsufficientcontrolmeasuresin
placetopreventthehazardgivingrisetoanincident.
Permit to Work
Adocumentsettingoutthemeasurestomanageriskswhen
undertakingworkwhichispotentiallyhighlydangerousand/or
non-routine.
Work Safe system
DocumentedorclearverbalVanOordinstructionsdetailingthe
wayinwhichanactivitywillbecompletedsafely.
Competent person
Apersonwithsufficienttraining,experience,skills,knowledgeand
otherqualitiestoenablehim/hertoproperlyundertaketheduties
assignedtohim/her.
Authorised person
Apersonwhohaswrittenauthorisationtoperformanactivity.
Confined space
-Anenclosedorpartiallyenclosedspace.
-Notintendedordesignedprimarilyasaplaceofwork.
-Withrestrictedmeansforentryandexit.
-Atatmosphericpressurewhenoccupied.
Which may at any time:
- Haveapotentiallyharmfulatmosphere.
- Haveanoxygendeficiencyorexcess.
