After the unfortunate events caused by the 2010 earthquake, Haiti launched several campaigns to help rebuild houses.Aside from the housing and shelter crisis, Haiti has one of the highest rate of infections of HIV, and also a very high rate of deaths from the same disease. This competition intended to address health as an integral solution, determined mostly by the quality of the living spaces.

1. 2. 3. 4.A superficial soil substitution and the rammed earth base, replace the need for traditional foundations, and lifts the house from the ground helping humidity and flood control.
The specialized program is added atop the base. This program is characterized by controlled and determined spaces which require certain control of air pockets and contact to the rest of the house.This program is divided in two blocks: dormitories and services.
The main roof provides independent ventilation to each spatial component and room, achieving a
air pocket control which is very necessary for infection control.Its roof span creates a shaded air pocket (between the main roof and the secondary concrete roof of the blocks), meant to cool the air intake.The main roof is designed for water cultivation, emptying rainy waters into the atrium, where it’s taken into a vase shaped ceramic water filter. It purifies the water and stores them for domiciliary use or farming. In this way the vase is like a town well, meant as a central gathering space for exchange and social interaction.

The blocks are taken apart, making room for a central common space.This generous space is an atrium characterized by it’s flexibility. It would serve the purpose for workshop as well as social areas of the house. It has excellent ventilation and climate control, due to its position.
Spatial continuity is obtained between the base and its context by the creation of access scalinattas. This would also lay grounds to the desired urban connections and bonds between units, once paired or set besides each other.

Our design approach was to integrate the concept for health in each aspect of the design, acting upon mayor concerns and the most frequent afflictions from the very conceptions of space.The final aim is to significantly create lasting improvements on the quality of life of the user, and to ensure the usage and learning of sustainable living practices which could, in term, be applied elsewhere.The use of certain technologies and strategies could render into an important legacy for the architecture’s occupants. 18

Inspired by the former text, I found myself designing a simple work table. The heart of the matter: “There’s no I in team.”Each unit has a persons working space, nevertheless it’s not possible to build the table without a second, third or fourth unit. As a result the table ensembles horizontal working teams, encouraging collaborations and exchange amongst work partners.

WOOD BEAM
The table is designed for easy building, it’s materials and components are found in common hardware stores.Its structure is built around a central wooden beam which ties the table together. Along the beam are channels into which the tables components fit. These channels give say to all the possible assembling between units and within each module. The assembly is easy to achieve. The technology is easily modifiable or replicated. The amount of configurations and positions is enormous because the table adjusts creatively to the users conditions.

The technical components of the passive house design corresponds with a reorganization of the facades as well as an improved organization of the individual floor plans and their relationship between inside and outside spaces. Passive measures -such as shading and natural ventilation-, as well as active measures -such as solar energy production and rain water recollection-, are combined to reduce the overall energy footprint and to improve living comfort.

The basic idea is to unfold space from the terrain, to bring man closer to earth.It’s from this basic operation that derives the architecture for the house. Its space develops from the void, giving each component an individual space, hence forming a rich and detailed object, that manages to penetrate and sink in to the memory of whom inhabits. It seeks not to be forgotten, in this sense it’s not ephemeral, but seeks to be infinite.
The objective is clear: to create a haven that transcends oblivion and in turn caves into memories. In order to achieve this three aspects are given priority: scale, detail and context.

This house is designed to emphasize that essential bond between man, space and matter. That’s why its architecture derives from the most basic of space principles: the simple enclosure, a haven (recinto*).

“Rainy waters are delivered, by means of a concrete beam, to a concrete plate. They are cleansed through a ceramic filter and fall into a water tank for later use as potable or gardening water.”
Scale: The design strives to create comfortable spaces, not big or luxurious, but small and “cozy”. The house is designed as an object composed of small spaces, meant to be perceived as anthropometricaly correct and fitting. Detail: Although the house is small, it’s driven by detailed design. Each component of the architecture, from windows to furniture, are designed as individual pieces that fit perfectly in the space. Such rigour would attempt to lay a rich ground for memory to cultivate upon. Details, as Bachelard would have it, are meant to resonate in memory.Context: This house bonds man to his context. It’s a seating from which to observe garden, the landscape, the sky. The water falls from the roof onto the concrete plate. This architecture gives man a place. This architecture is that of a window to inhabit.

The project is located at Guachipelín, an urban satellite for Escazú City. It’s characterized by its linear configuration and by the limits set by the terrains morphology which in addition to the roads that service the satellite, spread developments and houses along its two and a half kilometer length.Its an urban formation fragmented by its linearity and its urban model which compartmentalizes terrains in order to develop them, horizontally. This in turn emphasizes its decentralizing drive.Most of its programmatic composition is housing and its usual derivatives. This is one of the mayor urban issues, its programmatic exclusion and lack of variety.

The project is constituted architecturally of two parts, one for each main programmatic phase. The first, the office plaza, is built from the terrain, from its excavation. The result is a horizontal space which, in its continuity and length, promotes exchange and communicative richness sought in modern office spaces. Over this space overhangs the main roof which offers protection, light and ventilation. The roof is designed to allow visual amplitude from the main street, allowing people to see the landscape, rendering the project invisible.The second phase is the housing tower, built upon principles opposite from phase one. Its disjoined from the ground, being elevated. It sets out to separate its program from the street level. Each of its living units has its on floor level and elevator level. This gesture emphasizes on privacy and generates a better appropriation of the spaces.The tower is designed as a slender, elegant concrete volume which is positioned to allow (like phase one) the landscape to be seen from the street.
