OVERBURDEN

PORCUPINE GROUP SEDIMENTS

Chloritized medium grained felspathic sandstones.

Dark olive green., chlorite-al tered. oxidized, ma^slv** t-o nnnrlv hanrterl l-^2r ovritic medium

grained felspathic sandstones or greywackes. Rocks are sheared, foliated, brecciated, faulted.

Occasional thin beds of finer-grained, equally altered, sheared arqillites and siltstones

demonstrate the sedimentary character of these rocks which physically resemble altered mafic

volcanics. No quartz or quartz-carbonate veins.

Fault zone. Alteration comprises sericite, chlorite and minor talc. Pyrite not abundant.

and is stronqly oxidized.

Greywackes - Facing direction by graded turbidite beds is up the hole - i.e. beds young to

the north. Dip of sediments is 65~70ON at 96m and throughout the hole. Sediments comprise

fine or medium grained greywackes with 2fc interbedded siltstone or argillite. Quartz veins are

all narrower than 1 cm, of bedding parallel character in 20^. and crosscutting, brittle

fracture type in 60& of the veins. Some 20^ are of near-bedding oriented foliation, dio

slip type; these latter contain carbonate and fragments of stronqly sheared sediments.

90.5-95.3 ~ About six cycles of medium qrained greywacke qradinq to thin (2-3cm) argillite.

Each cycle shows minor carbonate as flooding or diagenetic cement in sandstones. Cycles

are 30 cm to 100cm in thickness. A foliation at ^ to core 080O) azimuth is evident in

the finer sediments. Thin quartz-Co3~(sericite) veins parallel this foliation

strike, but dip 55 south (93m). A second set of thin (1mm) quartz-Co^ veins strike

130 and dip vertically. A third set of minor tension fractures filled with quartz

lie essentially horizontally. Quartz * carbonate * sheared fragments of foliated

sediments usually less than 5"8 mm thick, constitute a fourth set of veins. These

are directly related to dip slip movements shown by si ickensiding, in the plane of

the azimuth of the borehole, on these vein surfaces. This vein type usually occurs

in fine silty argillites.

95-3-109m - Medium to coarse grained recrystal 1 ized chlorite * minor sericite-al tered

felspathic sandstones flooded by calcite. Some minor disseminated pyrite (less than

Ifc). Medium grained felspathic sandstones occupy 50^ of the interval, and have minor

interbedded silty argillites. A few thin .quartz-carbonate veins of all four sets

mentioned above are present. Veins in the coarse sandstones are "ghost-like". At

98m an oblique or parallel vein suggests the possibility of a fifth, North-South

set not intersected by this N-S oriented drillhole. Bedding parallel, fault dip-slip

veins of less than 8mm occur at 95-3, 98.5, 103.5 m. Some of the thin stratabound

bedding planar, but non-sl.ip, veins have minor skins of pyrite. Sericite is largely

absent from veins and affects none of the sediments except coarse sandstones.

Description

109-143 - Fine to medium grained dark grey greywackes with about 5? interbedded silty arqillites.

A single coarse, recrystal 1 ized, green chloritic sandstone with 2^ disseminated sericite

and less than ] % d isseminated pyrite lies between 132.5m and 135.4m. Basal contacts

of all turbidite cycles are sharp, tops grade into arqi Mites which are terminated sharply

by the coarse base of the next cvcle. The contacts between the subgroups described

(90.5; 95.3 and 109m, 143m) gre qradational. No quartz veins are present other than a few

thin, planar, unfolded quartz carbonate veins 2-4mm wide within the coarse chloritic

recrystal 1 Ized sandstone. These trend 45O and dip at 60-700 south, or at 1300 , with a

vertical dip. Minor sericite selvaqes occur on some veins; no sulphides are present- .

A sharply brecciated north-south quartz-carbonate -i- sphalerite + pyrite vein lies at 111.5m

Greywacke (90S) and argillite (lOfc)

Gradatlonal contact with overlying segment of stratigraphy. Greywacke-arqi 1 1 ite turbidite

than 5mm) of quartz and carbonate occur at 6m intervals - the section is essentially clear

of this style. Some have minor selvages of sericite, but this mineral is only of minor

importance. Alteration . is essentially absent. At 179.5m a 2cm irregular quartz * carbonate

pyrite -*- 5fc sphalerite vein has some sericite microscopic dark grey (Tcarbon) edges.

A similar vein, without sulphides occurs over 176-176. 3™, but lies in a North-South plane.

Other l-2cm veins of quartz-carbonate occur at 157-9m; 163-7; 16?; (176); (179-5); 186.5.

A few 45 -trending, 60 south dipping tension veins in incompetent greywackes are present at

186.5m; 191; and show a comb-structure of quartz-carbonate intergrowths between the walls of

the veins.

Between 191 and 192.5 a north-south vein runs in the plane of the hole azimuth. This

could be a hidden vein set not tested by the drilling.

Between 185 and 197 the argillite units show a change in colour to olive green or khaki,

due to original lithology or alteration - could be sericite alteration, associated with

planar bedding oriented dip slip crush veins.

Foliation fabrics are not clearly evident in this core, due to its dominantly greywacke

character. Carbonate flooding as rhomb i c alteration is essential1y absent except in a

few veins. Sulphides are low in volume. The hole is visually unpromising for gold.

GREYWACKE - pale greenish grey, medium grained, equigranular except near contacts (lower and

upper) where it is fine grained. Both contacts are obscured, by about 5cm wide quartz-carbonate

veins which contain chlorite and sericite. The quartz vein at lower contact contains graphite

flakes. A few thin (mm's) quartz carbonate veins occur within this unit.

GREYWACKE ( 80%)~ S i 1 tstone-Mudstone - fine grained, equigranular, very similar to above,

containing 2 to 3 "i wide si 1 tstone/mudstone beds. Actual contact and gradational fining

of greywacke not clear.

GREYWACKE-Siltstone-mudstone - several, well defined, meters wide cycles of greenish grey wacke,

Whole grading into siltstone and then mudstone. Generally massive, except in a few places

where mudstone exhibits faint bedding at 55O to 60CVcA. Best bedding observed from 151-l65m

and 178 to 178.5m. In this section some layers are boudinaged. Occasional floating argillaceousQ

fragment present. From 197 to 198m bedding is steepening to 45 /CA.

Quartz-carbonate veining is at various angles to CA, but most at 40 /CA. At 155.5m quartz-

carbonate bein about 10cm wide contains chlorite and sericite inclusions. From 160 to l6lm

the rock is weakly altered, pale green with frequent 205cm wide quartz-carbonate veins at 50 /

intrusive, but fragments are locally very distinct, calcareous (primary). Also irregular

pale yellow carbonate veins with minor quartz in a few places. Pyrite specks throughout.

Lower contact marked by 2cm's wide quartz carbonate vein with some chlorite and sericite.

GREYWACKE (70S) SILTSTONE/MUDSTONE -very much as 70-111.5. Uphole gradings, fine grained,

greywacke, coarser fraction, calcareous massive. Bedding in siltstone 60 to core axis.

fault. From 142-151 -5m abundant fine carbonate fractures at kS /CA, but also at other angles.

Locally rock in this section has brecciated aspect due to this carbonate veining. Pyrite

blotches and a few veinlets occasionally present.

From 164- 175 'carbonate veining as above but with pyrite blotches locally.
