Better water management is needed to ensure there is

enough good quality water to meet the needs of all users,

including the environment. The OECD is continuing its strong

commitment to provide guidance on improving water policy

through its work on economic and governance issues.

Working with a multi-disciplinary team drawn from across theorganisation, the OECD provides a forum for the exchange of

country experiences and the identification of good practice,

and helps to improve the economic and governance

information base for meeting the water challenge.

    Water Governance in the Netherlands:

Fit for the Future? This report assesses

the extent to which Dutch water

governance is fit for future challenges

and sets out an agenda for the reform

of water policies in the Netherlands.

It builds on a one-year policy dialogue

and is supported by robust analytical

    work and international best practice.

Water Security for Better Lives. This

major initiative is a call for action

to identify and manage water risks

    - water shortage, excess, pollution

    and disruption to freshwater systems

in a cost-efficient way. The report

    highlights the importance of setting

    and maintaining acceptable levels

of water risks through improving the

    understanding around tradeoffs to

    improve water security.

    Climate Change, Water and

    Agriculture. This report analyses

    adaptative capacity in agricultural

    water management, adaptation in

    agriculture to water variability and

    extreme events (floods and droughts),

    mitigation (water and energy), and

    uncertainty about future climate

    change.

    Water and Climate Change

    Adaptation. This report provides

    policy guidance to navigate increasing

water risks and uncertainty in a

    changing climate. It draws insights

from a stocktake of efforts to adapt

water systems across all 34 member

countries and the European Unionand examines the potential for using

    economic instruments to increase the

    flexibility and efficiency of adaptation

    responses.

    OECD Compendium of Agri-

environmental Indicators. Thisreport describes the policy and

    market drivers impacting on the

    environmental performance of

    agriculture. The chapter on water

    covers water resources withdrawals,

    irrigated area, irrigation water

    application rates, and water quality.

    Water Governance in Jordan.This

    report assesses the main governance

    and financing challenges to private

    sector participation (PSP) in the

water supply and sanitation sector of

Jordan, and provides ways forward toaddress them, based on international

    experience and OECD compendium of

    principles and good practices.

    Making Water Reform Happen in

    Mexico. This report provides policy

guidance on critical barriers to water

    reform in Mexico: multi-level and

river basin governance, economicefficiency and financial sustainability,

    and regulation of water supply

and sanitation. It builds on a one-

    year policy dialogue and includes

    an implementation plan to help

    the government address the OECD

    recommendations.

    Water Governance in Latin America

    and the Caribbean: a Multi-level

    Approach. The report reviews

    water governance arrangements

in 13 LAC countries. It argues that

public governance of water in most

LAC countries is fragmented andemphasises the need for governance

    instruments that are context-specific,

flexible and beneficial to the poor.

    Competition

    for water is

    intensifying and

    water is already

    over-allocated in

    many countries.

    Forthcoming publications

    Water, Innovation and Green

    Growth. Well-managed water

    systems can be important drivers

for growth and can generate huge

benefits for our health and our

    economy. This report will provide

guidance on how water policies can

    better contribute to green growth

    objectives.

    Water Resources Allocation: shared

    water, shared risks. Competition

for water is intensifying and water

    is already over-allocated in many

    countries. This book reviews the

    current allocation policies in OECD

and key partner countries and will

    provide policy guidance on how

    to improve the performance of

allocation regimes in order to better

reap the benefits of water resources.

    Lessons on reforming allocation

regimes will be drawn from countries

    with experience in tackling this

    difficult political challenge.

    OECD cities need

    to adjust the way

    they manage

    water to face

    challenges such

    as climate change,

    deteriorating

    infrastructure and

    declining financial

    resources.

OECD work on water will address a number of key areas of

current and emerging policy priorities. These include:

Water Policies for Future Cities. This work will provide

guidance on how governments can ensure the financial

sustainability of urban water systems, improve governance

and regulatory frameworks to better implement water

policies at different territorial scales, reduce barriers to the

use of innovative techniques and approaches, and better link

    urban and rural water policies.

OECD Water Governance Initiative. This multi-stakeholder

network has been established to support the implementation

of the good governance targets set during the 6th World

Water Forum, share experience to advance the global water

governance agenda, and stimulate discussions across a wide

range of actors within and outside of the water community.

The next meeting is planned for 24-25 November 2014.

OECD-Brazil Water Policy Dialogue. The OECD is working

with the National Water Agency of Brazil (ANA) to assist with

the reform of water policies. The focus is on enhancing

co-operation between federal and state levels and

strengthening water allocation regimes. Key findings and

recommendations will be published in April 2015.

    Well-managed

    water systems

    can be important

    drivers for growth

    and can generate

    huge benefits for

    our health and our

    economy.

Water and Agriculture. Work will focus on policies, tools and

institutions to manage floods and droughts in agriculture

in the context of climate change, as well as the sustainable

    management of groundwater in agriculture.

Human Impacts on the Nitrogen Cycle. This work promotes

a holistic approach to nitrogen management. It will survey

country strategies and policies to manage Reactive Nitrogen

(Nr) -- nitrogen oxides, nitrates, ammonia, nitrous oxide and

    ammonium nitrate.

The Global Forum on Environment (GFENV). A venue that

brings together international experts to share experiences

and explore common policy issues focusing principally on

the environmental dimension of sustainable development

and its linkages with economic and social policies. The

November 2014 GFENV will provide New perspectives on

the Food, Water and Energy Nexus and aims to look at what

governments can do to today to address long-term pressures

on food, water and energy uses.
