The in building for 25 years
The in building for 25 years
To mark this great achievement, and to begin the 25th anniversary celebrations in style,
Brymor held a champagne reception at The Aspex Gallery, Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth. The event was a great success with over 60 clients attending and showing their support.
This stunning venue is of particular relevance to the company, having carried out the renovation and conversion of the Naval stores building, listed under the Schedule of Ancient Monuments, back
in 2006. This project went on to achieve ‘Highly Commended’ at the 2007 Construction Manager of the Year Awards.
Stephen Morton, Chairman and Founder, said “I am very lucky and proud to have managed this company for the last 25 years and to see the growth and expansion through both good and difficult times.
“Without the support of our client base and the dedication I have received from my loyal staff, we
would not be the success story we are today”. Stephen was also taken back by the support
received from clients stating, “the support from our ever-growing client base for this event has just been overwhelming.
“It has made me realise how far the company has come over the past 25 years and why we continue to be one of the largest, independently-owned construction companies in the South of England”.
12th February 2012 marked a memorable occasion for Brymor; the company reached its 25th Anniversary.

Brymor are pleased to be carrying a project on behalf of New Park Community Centre, Chichester District Council and Sport England to construct a New Community Centre in the heart of Chichester, West Sussex,
valuing £1.35 Million. The project is progressing well with all involved extremely happy with how the new centre is shaping up. The
brickwork is nearing completion and at present the drum roof is being constructed. Once this has been achieved the single-ply membrane will be applied. The main roof construction commenced early April 2012.
The first phase of the project is currently due for completion in July and the second phase in August. The New Park Community Centre is planning a topping out ceremony for the start of May and anticipates the
Mayor of Chichester will do the honours.

This unusual and challenging
project involved the installation
of 12 new tanks each having the
capacity to hold 65,000 to 68,000
pints of beer. The scheme was
carried out in two stages. Stage
one involved the installation of the
steelworks up to the mezzanine floor
and the installation of the basement
tanks. Stage two then incorporated
the construction of the steelworks up
to the roof and the installation of the
top tanks. To conclude the works we
also constructed the roof and carried
out the external cladding together
with blockwork and face brickwork
from floor level up to 5m.
There were many challenges that
our project team faced throughout
the scheme due to the works being
carried out in the middle of a fully
operational brewery. The logistics of
the works, and its deliveries, were
always high on the agenda to ensure
there was minimal disruption to
the brewery’s everyday operations.
Teamwork was a the key, to the
success of this scheme. Brymor
became a part of Fullers Brewery

Brymor have been fortunate enough to
be working alongside Fullers Brewery on
numerous projects and therefore jumped at
the chance to be involved in the installation
of the new tank farm at its brewery in
Chiswick, London.

and incorporated themselves in
to their systems of work where
possible. Brymor aimed to remain
flexible to all requests and the needs
of the brewery at all times.
During the works our team
were faced with the discovery
of an old well. Before the works
could continue the well had to be
decommissioned and dug out. The
first problem faced was how to
remove the well without the risk of
people falling in. After numerous
discussions our subcontract
groundwork’s foreman on site came
up with a clever plan.
Bales of straw were used to
fill the well to the top, eliminating
the hazard of operatives falling in,
allowing the works to be carried
out safely. We then dug four metres
down around the well and removed
the brickwork, once this had
been achieved the straw was also
removed. This approach was not
only the safest option but also very
cost effective and environmentally
friendly, as the straw was then taken
back and reused.
The well was
finally capped and
concreted over and
the programme of
works continued.
There were many challenges that our project team faced throughout the scheme due to the works being carried out in the middle of a fully operational brewery.

A fter fantastic success in the regional heats the students
at Wavell School were invited to represent the UK in the 5th Japan Rock Challenge Event and on the 29th January 2012, 14 members of the Wavell Rock Challenge Team and two members of staff flew out to Tokyo to have an experience of a lifetime.
The Rock Challenge event went very well and the school’s performance with the help of the Japanese students
(who were brought on the stage to dance with the students at the end of their piece) was a huge success. Phil Branch, Director of Expressive Arts explained “If you could have
seen the look on the faces of the Japanese students I think the theme of the Rock Challenge Japan this year ‘Healing Through The Arts’ could clearly be seen –
even if not all of them had learnt the choreography we had sent out to each school.
In the audience were four students representing a school in the north of Japan that had been swamped by the tsunami. 90% of the population of the school died in those terrible few minutes. It was very moving to have them comment on how good it was to have students from the other side of the world come to Japan to show their support and it made them feel like they were not forgotten after the ‘media
circus’ that had engulfed them after the tsunami.
A student summed up the whole experience as ‘just brilliant’. Phil Branch was proud to say that the students were fantastic ambassadors not only for the UK and Wavell School but also for our
sponsors who helped make the dream come true.
Brymor would like to congratulate Wavell School once again, we were proud to have supported you in your achievements.

The project came as a result of the client needing to relocate from their existing
premises by mid March 2012 and only leaving approximately 16 weeks to complete the works and move 300 staff into the new building.
Our client knew from the outset that this project was going to consist of constant changes due to the fast track nature of the scheme and was therefore very selective in the procuring of the contractor, as they needed to ensure everyone on the project worked as a team. Brymor were finally selected for their flexible approach to the project
together with the good track record with the client on previous schemes.
The project involved the complete fit-out of a three storey office block in just 12 weeks. There are many aspects to the works including new partitions throughout, communication rooms, kitchens, meeting rooms and a canteen. In addition to these works major alterations to data, air conditioning and electrics were carried out as well as a new security system (swipe cards) and turnstiles being installed.
Design meetings were held every week to track
the constant changes and alterations to the layout of the building.
Numerous members of Brymor’s site team were based on site and stayed in welfare units, including Brymor Project Manager Tom Drew, which meant we were able to extend our hours of working and enable easy access to the site for all involved. At one point in the contract our site team were working 12 hour days, 7 days a week to ensure we fulfilled our customer’s requirements and expectations.
This exciting project was completed on time ready for staff to move in. Furniture was delivered after 13 weeks and the last items moved in on the 3rd March 2012, just 15 weeks after commencement.
On Wednesday 14th March 2012 the project team had a celebration evening at the Coombe Abbey Hotel with a dinner and awards ceremony taking place. Brymor’s project team came up with some fun awards for all involved which was a great way to end a very successful and rewarding project.
Brymor’s commercial team have
just completed a fast track fit-out
project for a prestigious blue-
chip client at Ashbrook Court in
Coventry, valuing £1.9 Million.

Brymor have been working at The Wavell
School since July 2011. During the construction process we came across a very old cherry tree. The existing tree was a mature and a quality example of the species; however the extension footprint meant that the tree had to be removed. Our project team tried to have the tree relocated by Hillier’s however the cost was approximately £2,000 with no guarantee was given regarding the survival of the tree once replanted. The decision was made by Hampshire County Council to dispose of the existing tree, however late last year Brymor decided to donate a new tree as it had proved to be such a loss to the school.
The planting ceremony took place on Friday 30th
March with various team members from both Brymor and the school attending. The ceremony also coincided with the retirement of Mrs Jan Emms, a very well thought-after teacher, who has taught at The Wavell School for 24 years. To celebrate her retirement Jan was
approached by Amanda Rowley, Headmistress, to ask if she would do the honours and plant the new tree which Jan was proud to accept. She was also presented with a plaque which she placed next to the tree in memory of her time at the school.
The ceremony was great fun and a great positive way to continue the success of the project at The Wavell School.

Project Manager completed the London Marathon
Gary Edmonds a Brymor Project Manager
completed the London Marathon on 22nd April 2012 in an impressive 3 hours, 39 minutes and 39 seconds. Not only was this an impressive time he actually managed to beat his time from 25 years ago when he ran the race at just 24!
Gary raised an amazing £2000 for a Croydon-based charity –The Garwood Foundation. Gary chose this charity after working on the Rutherford School project in 2011.
Rutherford School is a specialist independent mixed day school for pupils between the ages of two - 19 that have profound and multiple learning difficulties, complex medical needs and additional sensory impairments.
A huge congratulations to Gary.
Cherry Tree Planting Ceremony at The Wavell School
“In 2011, the number of people employed in construction went up to 2.5% to 734,000. For 2012
the figures are expected to remain the same.”
IT’S A FACT
“Brymor very generously offered to purchase a replacement cherry tree and the School was very grateful for this gesture. The cherry tree is an important symbol for those who work and study at the School, particularly those who work in the Learning Support Faculty. The tree has always been a symbol of the spirit and ethos of Learning Support and the flowering of the cherry tree had been celebrated every year.
“The School would like to thank Brymor for the ongoing positive partnership with The Wavell School. The School has really appreciated Brymor’s flexibility and consideration for the School’s needs all the way through the building project”.
Amanda Rowley, Headmistress
