ABOUT WORK AND PLAY

The Work & Play programme is inspired by the social and work-related history of the current Dundas site, in the centre of Middlesbrough. It was previously home to the towns Winter Gardens, founded by Lady Florence Bell in 1907, as an attempt to tackle one of the social problems which worried the Edwardian middle classes - the ‘improvident use of leisure time, by working class people’. The Winter Gardens stood on this site up until 1963, to then be replaced with a large office block, shopping arcade and car park. This office block Dundas House, currently houses project, exhibition and events spaces, as well as artists’ studios, managed by Navigator North in partnership with arts organisation, East Street Arts.

Work & Play includes a series of artist-led events, artist residencies, exhibitions and workshops. Artists working across Tees Valley have been supported in developing their practice through a small grants scheme, enabling them to realise specific projects or explore ideas relating to Work & Play. Professional development sessions will offer knowledge and practical skills development to artists across the region.

An AV space within the Dundas Arcade will show regional and national artists work, offering audiences an opportunity to see and experience a range of work.

NAVIGATOR NORTH

Exploring connections between artists, spaces and audiences

► Formed in 2010 and directed by arts professional and curator, James Lowther and artists Vicky Holbrough and Nicola Parkin. Navigator North exists to initiate, facilitate and promote opportunities for visual artists and to further their creative practice.

► We initiate activities to raise the public awareness of artists, artworks and creative practice, stimulating dialogue, interaction and engagement between artists and the public. This is done through participatory events, performances, exhibitions, and residencies in publicly accessible spaces including and prioritising non-arts spaces, where artists can both show and create work.

► Amongst our aims we seek to offer artists the opportunity to produce work, curated to specific themes that engage with non art audiences as well as those interested in the arts through non-conventional exhibition channels, encouraging the widest possible audience for the work.

AVUtilising vacant shops and spaces within Dundas Arcade,the AV space will offer visitors to one of Middlesbrough’s indoor shopping areas a taste of national and regional film-based art works. Programmed to grab the attention of passersby, and enhance and increase the diversity of visual arts in the area, these short works will be one to watch!

OPEN STUDIOSSaturday 19th October, 1pm - 6pm, Dundas House, Middlesbrough

Navigator North will be opening its doors to the public and inviting visitors to see the variety of our spaces and how we use them. The event will include artists in their studios, alongside exhibitions and installations of artists work. Visitors can take a roof top tour for a great view of Middlesbrough and the surrounding area, as well as finding out about printmaking in The Print Room and even have a go at making a print. ARTIST DEVELOPMENTThrough the small grants scheme 8 artists have received funding, workspace and support to develop their artistic practice and deliver workshops and events. This has been offered alongside a tailored programme of professional development workshops to support future activity and develop professionalism within the arts in the region.

James has been working on site at Lingfield Point, Darlington for three months researching and developing new work based on the sites previous owners, wool

Works from James Paterson’s residency will be on display at the Festival of Thrift taking place at Lingfield Point, Darlington on the

ACTION RESEARCH

Sara Cooper is researching the history of the Nelson Collection of birds, nests and eggs, at The Dorman Museum with a view to establishing a mechanism for artist interaction and intervention within the Museum and establishing an artist residency programme.
