Words From Your President...

Hello, fellow club members! It is that time of year when the leaves turn colors and fall to the ground. Yep, now is the time to blow those leaves into your neighbor’s yard (so you don't have to rake and bag them) and to get more time in your shop! While in the shop, don't forget to finish the problem piece you picked up at the last meeting for the President's Challenge.

The next President's Challenge will be interesting and require some imagination. That's all I’ll say; you'll have to come to the November 10th meeting, to find out about the December President's Challenge!

The October meeting was a “Hollowing” good time, with Mike Jack-ofsky demonstrating hollow forms. Not to be outdone, in November, Devon Palmer will be showing off his skill at making a pepper mill, complete with some offset turning. Alongside Devon will be Bruce

Kerns at the beginner's corner showing how to make some Holiday ornaments. Don't forget the 50/50 raffle; itjust might pay to attend the meeting. Feddie and Ron will be hosting Show & Tell, so bring in that piece you have been working on and share it with your fellow turners.

As technology seems to be growing everywhere, our club is trying to keep pace. Devon has been working on the club’s Facebook page; he will unveil it at the November meeting.

AAW is offering scholarships to Arrowmont and John C. Campbell schools. If you're interested, please submit your name at the November meeting, or no latter than December 1st to one of the officers. You must be an

Bruce Kerns demonstrated using Sea Urchins and wood turning to make ornaments for the holidays. We met at WoodCraft on Saturday morning October 24th. There were members and non-member’s alike watching Bruce turn the finials to attach to the Sea Urchins.

Bruce meticulously prepared the Sea Urchins to mount the finials on the top and bottom. Once he had the orna-ments completed, he said he would finish them by spraying them with urethane or shellac. You need to see the pictures to appreciate his efforts. When he finished demonstrating how to use Sea Urchins as ornaments, he then demonstrated making a hollow form sphere to use in lieu of a Sea Urchin. This is also another way to makeornaments for the holidays.

After the demonstrations, Bruce invited members of the audience to come up and try their hand at it. They soonlearned it was not quite as easy as Bruce made it out to be; however, everyone learned something and had a great time.

Next month’s mentoring session will be just as exciting with Mike Trucco and Nelson Meyer demonstrating how to make Bracelets, Ice Cream Scoops and Bottle Stoppers. These also make wonderful presents for the holidays.

November Mentoring Session we will be held at WoodWerks on November 21st. from 10:00am to 12:00 noon.

Words From Your President: (continued from page 1)..AAW member. If you're not AAW member, now would be a good time to become one. We will draw two names for nomination at the December meeting. The two nominees will be submitted to the AAW for the final drawing in mid-December.

I encourage you to become an AAW member. I can't say enough of what this membership means to me person-ally. Not only do you get the AAW magazine subscription, you also get a regular online magazine, emails with helpful news, and newsletters from Phil McDonald (the director of AAW), you’ll also be qualified for a lot of giveaways throughout the year and have access to world-renowned turners.

Later in November at the mentoring session, we will have two of your best officers behind the lathe showing offtheir skills. Nelson will be making his world-famous ice cream scoops. (I heard that Ron may have ice cream there to try out these famous ice cream scoops) Mike will be demonstrating his bracelets; they will make nice gifts for the women in your family. So come to the next mentoring session November 21st at Wood Werks. Now for a little housekeeping: the club needs a newsletter editor to relieve Naeem. If you enjoy reading the newsletter, please consider stepping up. Lastly at the end of each meeting, please stay and help put all the chairs and tables back where they belong. He demonstrates at his own club, Gulf Coast Woodturning Association, and at the Southwest Association of Turners (SWAT) annual symposium. He has applied this year to be a presenter at the national AAW symposium.
