NEWSLETTER - ISSUE 4/2020 OF 19 MAY 2020 Words by the Chair Dear colleagues, At our next remote ITRE meeting we will be continuing our extensive exchanges with the European Commission regarding the effects of COVID 19 in all our policy areas within our remit. In this sense, Commissioner Kadri Simson will be joining us to touch upon the plans being drawn up concerning energy related aspects of the European Recovery after the crisis. Energy will be of strategic importance in the context of the Covid-19 economic recovery package. One of the key areas to address is the energy efficiency of buildings, which are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in the EU. On 11 May, the Commission published its roadmap for the renovation wave, which aims to at least double current renovation rates. An increased renovation of buildings could create local jobs and support SMEs in the EU, while at the same time saving energy, money and CO2. Furthermore, Members will be holding a consideration of the draft opinion on Establishing the Just Transition Fund the vote of which is expected to take place in July. Finally, we will be adopting ITRE's opinions on three files on The European Forest Strategy, An EU legal framework to halt and reverse EU driven global deforestation and the EU's role in protecting and restoring the world's forests.
