What is Wordpress?

Wordpress is a blogging system thatallows you to put down your thoughtsand such in a format that people canread.

Wordpress has become the dominateblogging tool on the internet.

This is due to a number of factors thatmainly comes from the fact that so manypeople have created blogs usingwordpress.

What’s the difference?

Wordpress is the blogging software

Wordpress.com is the website thatallows you to create your own hostedwordpress blog for free.

Wordpress.com is create and run by thesame people that created wordpresssoftware.

So which one will you use?

Well, it’s going to be installing the blogsoftware on your own domain, then youwould want to use the wordpressblogging software.

If, all you want to do is have a free blog,then you would simply go toWordPress.com


How much does it cost?

Well here’s the great news aboutWordPress, it does not cost a singledime!

And that is also for the software to installon your own server or to have a blog ontheir website.

So, why aren’t you using this now?

So, why use a blogging software?

While the biggest reason why you woulddo this is for more traffic to your website.

The other reason would be to get moreclients.

And yet another reason would be to getmore press coverage for your business.

I’ll show you a couple of different waysto get content for your WordPress blogthat takes very little effort on your part!


What is a blog?

So, exactly what is a blog?

Well a blog is a more organized way topresent your thoughts, ideas, andinformation to the public.

A lot of times the blog is about a person’sinner feelings and views on subjects

For a business it would be a place todiscuss new services, new ventures, newproducts and general information about thebusiness.


What is a blog?

For example, my own blog that I havethat WordPress.com is called InternetPredator Tracker.

This blog is not only about my software,but it’s also a general blog about myown views and takes on different issuesinvolving the Internet, security, andgeneral information.

So really, a blog is what you make it!


What do you blog about?

So, what should you blog about?

You can blog about anything when itcomes to creating your own blog.

You blog about your business, yourservices, your new services, your newproducts, the latest movies, music youheard on the way to work, pretty muchanything.

It’s all up to you.


What should you blog about?

So now you know what a blog is about

And you know what you can blog about

But what should you blog about?

Well that depends on what you want todo with this blog.

If you’re going to be doing this for yourbusiness you need to be able to have agoal in mind for this blog.



If your goal is to simply get the word outabout your business, then blog aboutanything involving your business.

If your goal is to bring more customersand your business, then you need toblog about very specific items.

If your goal is to get ranked higher in thesearch engine’s, then you need a veryspecific plan of action.



Now if you’re blogging to increase yourbusiness or rankings in the searchengines, the mirror very specific thingsyou should do.

This involves something called searchengine optimization.

And yes it’s not just for a webpage, youalso need to do this for blogs.

Why?



If you want more business, then youneed to make sure that your blog iscarefully built.

What you need to do is make sure thatyou have researched your Keywords!

If you are not sure what keywords are,let me give you a quick overview.

FORGET GETTING THE TOPRANKINGS FOR THOSE!!

Besides those are worthless keywords,people using those are browsing. Youwant BUYERS.

Designing your blog

Now that you have your keywords, younow can start to put together your blog.

You need to first create a gmail accountbased on your Primary Long Tailkeyword.

For example: private investigator newyork

Your blog title (meaning the overall title,not just the postings) should have thatsame long tail keyword

And since you have those keywordsalready put together, keep them on anotepad on your PC.

This way, you can access them quickly.

Don’t worry, you will need them again!


Where to setup a blog?

Well, that would depend on what yourgoal of the blog is.

I would say first, set it up onwordpress.com or pimallblog.com

Then you can create another blog onyour own website, that is slightlydifferent then the other one.

So, at least have one blog onwordpress.com or pimallblog.com

This uses the wordpress software andwith the links to the PI Mall, it gives it agood high rating already for you.

It’s pretty easy to use, all you need is anemail address and you can start creatingyour own blog within minutes!

And it is already listed as one of thesites that is searched on a continuingbasis by Google, Yahoo and Bing.

And this is a FREE site!


Your own blog software

Now, if you want to run your own blog,on your own server, then your bestchoice is using the Wordpress software.

You can download the software for freefrom www.wordpress.org

NOTE: That is NOT wordpress.com!!

Also, most hosted websites have anoption to install the wordpress software.

If you do install your own copy ofwordpress blog software on your hostedsite, follow these guidelines

Name the directory for the blog:

Private investigator blog

New York private investigator blog

Again, building on your primarykeywords here.

You need just a few things:

Once you have signed up, you can goand see your blog by going to the blogaddress you created.

However, that will just show you the blogitself, if you want to do anything, youneed to go to the admin panel.

With the Upgrades option, you can getsome additional things for your blog, butat a cost!

Add a domain: $5

VideoPress: $60

Custom CSS: $15

Under this section you can find out allthe information about the posts on yourblog.

You have author information, categories,tags, stats and date

Plus you can control the actions of theposts, approve, delete, etc.

If you purchased the additional mediaspace, you can upload a lot of videos toyour blog.

Basic accounts only have 3GB ofstorage.

You can upload MP3, MP4a, WAV, OGGfiles.

But if you just link to your YouTubeaccount, no need to upload or store thevideos!

Links

Here you can put in all sorts of links foryour blog.

Of course, you better link back to eachPAGE in your website.

BUT make sure that the pages have adifferent title, description and “theme”

Also, link to all of your other web2.0websites, your Squidoo lens and such

These are the pages that you can createthat talk about your blog

Or the pages can provide informationabout your service

Comments

This is where visitors can leavecomments on your blog

It is up to you if you want people to dothis or not.

But, you do get the ability to approve, ordeny these comments.


Ratings

This is where you can rate the differentpages on your blog

I really don’t use this that much at all.


Polls

Here you can create a Poll for yourvisitors.

I would use this for split testing a newidea, a new service, something like that

Its also a great way to see what yourvisitors are thinking or doing.

By creating a poll, you can better targetyour visitors with products orinformation.


Appearance

Here is where you can customize yourblog to look better to your visitors.

Now, appearance does not have a lot todo with SEO, but….

The “design” of your site can help!


Themes

Here you can change the look of yourblog by choosing a different look for yourwebsite.

There is no big SEO, Search EngineOptimization, secret with the theme

Just choose the theme that you find themost appealing

And there is no problem changing itevery so often.


Widgets

These give you a number of things thatyou can add in to your blog to make it abetter place to visit.

There are many different widgets thatyou can look at and choose from aswell.

I would always look at other Socialnetworking options for this, twitter, flickr,delicious, etc.

How do you use them?

EASY!

Just find the widget that you want, andclick on it, and then drag it over to theSidebar

Now you have a new widget toconfigure!


Extras

Minor things to add to your blog

Keep the two defaults, that’s about it.


Custom Header

If you have a customer header graphic,then you can upload it here.

Should you?

YES!!!

The size should be 700 x 200 pixels

But, make sure that a graphic artistcreates it.

Have your logo, blog title, in the graphic.


TypeKit Fonts

Nope, don’t use it.


Edit CSS

If you know CSS, you can make somechanges here.

But if you want real power with CSS,you must buy that option.

If you are selling a PRODUCT, youwould want to do this.

If the blog is about you or your PIbusiness, it is not worth the money.


Users

Here you can create users on your blogthat can add content to your blog

These could be, and should be youremployee’s

Either real, or fake.

And you can even add others if youhave more of a community based blog.

These are special tools that allow you todo a few nice things with the site

Speed up wordpress

Press This, grab information from theweb to post to your blog

Post with IE8, again another way to postinformation from the web to your blog

Webmaster tools, for tracking

This is where you can go in and modifyall the different settings on your blog.

Email address

Date format

Time format


Making your first post



To make your first post, just go to yourDashboard and click on the Quick Press

Just give your post a Title

And enter your content!

Next, you MUST enter your keywordsfor this post.

Remember the list I told you to keep onyour desktop? Use that list.



In the world of Wordpress, yourkeywords are now known as Tags

Keywords should not only be in your“tags”, but also in your POST

Now, all you have to do is click Publish!

That’s it!


One blog, two blogs, three

Should you have more then one blog?

YES, YES, YES!

Have one on your main business

Have one on yourself

Have one for each of your employees!

But make sure, that each blog has linksto the other blogs

And links to your site!


Blogging Schedule

Blog at least once a day

Blog about a main keyword at leasttwice a week

Blog about your service once a week.

How can you get blogging material?

Do you really need to think of it everyday?

NOPE!

Here are some great ways to getmaterial for your blog!


Log into your Gmail account and open anew tab on your browser.

Then go to: www.google.com/alerts

Here you will setup a series of alerts onkeywords that you are interested in.

Facebook investigations
