The UIC College of Dentistry’s Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) Chapter was named the Hispanic Dental Association’s (HDA) 2016 National Student Chapter of the Year at the HDA’s recent Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. This award recognizes the chapter for outstanding efforts to provide service, education, advocacy and leadership in Hispanic oral health.

Selected by a committee consisting of HDA National Office staff members and invited jurors, the chapter stood out among affiliate dental student chapters across the nation.

“We won due to our excellence in community outreach and activity this past year,” Jacqueline Magallanes, President of the UIC HSDA, explained. “Chapter of the Year guidelines look at community outreach, membership growth, and overall

activity. We participated in dozens of community outreach events where we provided oral hygiene instruction, patient education, and free dental services in underserved communities with minority populations.”

Magallanes added, “We also boosted our student membership by nearly 100%, and hosted Spanish classes with an average of 30-40 students each session. We also have a very close partnership with our parent chapter, the regional Greater Chicago HDA, through which we participate in CE courses, seminars, and

social activities.”The award benefits the College

communities in our city: the Hispanic population. It speaks to UIC’s mission of improving oral health, and HSDA’s mission of helping the underserved. Winning this award celebrates the hard work and dedication of HSDA’s board and members.”

Magallanes added that “HSDA celebrates diversity, and that by embracing our differences, we come together as a community with a common goal: to improve the oral and general health of our patients. Also, HSDA is very thankful to UIC’s Urban Health Program for sponsoring a couple of students to attend the conference, and especially thankful to our parent chapter, the Greater Chicago HDA, for sponsoring six students to attend the conference.

She offered special thanks to alumni Dr. Marcela Escobar, Dr. Carla Delafuente, and Dr. Genaro Romo of the Greater Chicago HDA for their support of the UIC HSDA.

Dr. Nisha Garg Wins AAPHD Community Dentistry AwardDr. Nisha Garg, who graduated on May 7, has been named the recipient of the Predoctoral Dental Student Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Community Dentistry by the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD).

“I won this award because of my Schweitzer Fellowship Veteran Outreach project,” Dr. Garg explained,

noting that the project had several facets. “For example, I conducted monthly oral health seminars at the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Center for veterans who are ineligible for VA-affiliated dental care.”

Dr. Garg also led the initiative to hold a Veterans’ Screening Day at the College, “for veterans who have been searching for a dental clinic to turn to.”

“More and more people enjoy reading news online, so that’s where you will find Word of Mouth,” he added. “However, if you prefer a printed copy, you will be able to easily print out the issue on your PC.”

Moving Word of Mouth online will save the College a substantial amount of money in printing costs, Bike explained.

“During a time of uncertain budgets, we wanted to do our part to cut costs,” Bike said.

This approach will also complement the new interactive website for the College launched in May.

experiences of working with veterans to a population larger than that of the UIC College of Dentistry,” Dr. Garg explained.

The application process was an extensive one, and Dr. Garg collaborated on it with Noorullah; Dr. Caswell Evans, Associate Dean for Prevention and Public Health Sciences; and Dr. Darien Witherspoon, Assistant Professor, Pediatric Dentistry, Division of Prevention and Public Health Sciences.

“After all that hard work, I am so excited and honored to have won first place,” Dr. Garg said.

She traveled to Cincinnati, OH, for an award ceremony during the National Oral Health Conference on April 17, and presented a poster about the project on April 18.

The honor includes $500 for her first place finish and another $100 for travel expenses and membership in the AAPHD.

“We have had previous students who have received recognition by the AAPHD, but this is the College’s first first-place honoree,” Dr. Evans said.

“Several years ago, this College established the inaugural student chapter of AAPHD; it has served as a model for the 25 or so chapters that developed in other schools of dentistry subsequently,” he noted.

Dr. Garg also participated in the Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows Program Annual Celebration of Service at Northwestern University on April 12.

“The Schweitzer Fellowship was the initial reason why I chose to pursue a year-long community service outreach project with the veteran population,” Dr. Garg explained. “We were very thrilled this year because Dean Clark Stanford was the keynote speaker for the event.”

Dr. Evans and Dr. Witherspoon also presented posters at the event.

Following remarks by Dr. Stanford and other speakers, Dr. Garg and 29 other Schweitzer Fellows each gave a short summary about their project.

Student Angelica Lagunas Earns Dr. Irwin B. Robinson AwardAngelica Lagunas, a DMD/PhD student who will graduate from the College in 2018, received an Irwin B. Robinson Research and Education Foundation Award from the Odontographic Society of Chicago on April 14.

The College nominated Lagunas, whose application for the award was accepted by the society.

“The award is given to research dental students,” Lagunas explained. She received a certificate at the


society’s dinner, a $500 stipend, and another $500 for travel to a dental meeting.

Lagunas’s research is on telomeres which are repetitive DNA-protein structures at chromosome ends protected by telomeric repeat factor 2 (TRF2) and maintained by telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT). TRF2 and TERT expression is altered in many cancers. Loss of TRF2 triggers the DNA damage response, chromosome fusions, genomic instability, and increased oral cancer metastasis.

Lagunas is investigating whether telomerase inhibition might be an effective anti-cancer therapy to block the effects of telomere dysfunction mediated by loss of TRF2. She has created conditional TRF2/Terc double null mutant mice to evaluate the effects of telomere dysfunction on cancer stem cell phenotype and biologic outcomes in oral cancer.

“One student from each dental school in Illinois receives this award,” Lagunas said. “It is a great opportunity to show the research and accomplishments of the dental students to the members of the Odontographic Society of Chicago.”

The award is named for the late Dr. Irwin B. Robinson, a faculty member in the College’s Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from 1947 to 1960 and again from 1990 to 2010. Dr. Robinson also was a member of the Office of Advancement and Alumni Affairs team during his second stint with the College. He was a longtime member of the College’s UIC Dental Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Dr. Robinson’s research was in sickle-cell anemia, production of sarcomas, surgical closure of oroantral fistula, surgery on the mandible, and tetanus.

The Odontographic Society also presented Robinson Awards to dental students Spencer Blackham of Southern Illinois University and Laila Malaki of Midwestern University.

University Honors Dr. Dale Nickelsen with William E. Winter AwardDr. Dale C. Nickelsen, an alumnus, longtime faculty member in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, former Supervisor of the Postgraduate Pedodontic (Pediatric Dentistry) Clinic, and former Interim Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs, received the University of Illinois Foundation’s William E. Winter Award for Outstanding Advocate Leadership from University President Timothy L. Killeen.

Dr. Nickelsen was presented his award at the Evening with Legacies and Leaders dinner, a UIC event that honors donors and volunteers, held on April 7, 2016.

“I am truly honored to be this year’s recipient of the William Winter Award,” Dr. Nickelsen said at the event. “Being an advocate for our University has been one of my most meaningful as well as challenging activities.

“It has been my privilege to champion the dental college,” he continued. “It is a recognized, world-class, top-of-the-profession institution.”

The Winter Award recognizes individuals who play an active role in securing private support for the University. The award is named for the late William E. Winter, a former CEO of the 7-UP Company and a longtime University of Illinois Foundation board member.

The Nickelsen Pediatric Dentistry Postgraduate Clinic in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry is named for Dr. Nickelsen and his wife, Caren.

“Caren and I have witnessed, first-hand, what can be accomplished through philanthropy when the newly reconstructed postgraduate pediatric dentistry clinic, named in our honor, was dedicated,” Dr. Nickelsen said, noting that the clinic “will significantly improve patient treatment and the education of our pediatric dental specialists.”

Dr. Nickelsen is the second Winter Award recipient from the College. The late Dr. George J. Kottemann, ’55, Orthodontics ’59, received the award in 1998.

Matt Bernard Earns Award at Delta Sigma Delta Annual MeetingDelta Sigma Delta’s Rho Chapter at the College of Dentistry attended the Delta Sigma Delta Annual Regional Meeting hosted by the Indiana University School of Dentistry in April.

The meeting included presentations by all the chapters of their activities, research presentations, a continuing education course on forensic dentistry, and a tour of the Indiana University School of Dentistry.

UIC College of Dentistry student Matt Bernard earned an award for his research presentation.

“There were plenty of opportunities for fellowship with students from other schools, which gives our members a larger perspective on our profession,” said Dr. Danny Hanna, Clinical Associate Professor, Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, chapter advisor.

Dr. James Bahcall Joins College's Department of EndodonticsWith years of experience teaching at three other dental

schools, Dr. James Bahcall has joined the College’s Department of Endodontics as a Clinical Associate Professor.

Dr. Bahcall earned his DMD from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, a Certificate in Endodontics from the Marquette University School of Dentistry, and an MS from Marquette.

His dental teaching career began at the Northwestern University School of Dentistry in the

Department of Endodontics, where Dr. Bahcall eventually became Chair of that department. After Northwestern’s dental school closed Dr. Bahcall moved on to Marquette, where he eventually became Chair of the Department of Surgical Sciences and Director of the Endodontic Division. He later taught at the Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine before joining the UIC College of Dentistry.

At the College, Dr. Bahcall noted, he is “teaching clinical endodontics to undergraduate and postgraduate endodontic students. I also am performing clinical and benchtop research within the field of endodontics.”

He said he hopes “to provide students with current clinical and didactic endodontic techniques and knowledge within a collegial learning environment.”

Dr. Bahcall wrote the book Smile for Life: A Guide to Overcoming Your Fear of the Dentist, and also has contributed chapters to three endodontics books. He has been a thesis director and advisor for more than ten students, and is a reviewer for five journals. He received teaching awards at both Northwestern and Marquette.

He and his wife, Amy, have two adult children: Allie, 23, and Jamie, 21. When not working, Dr. Bahcall said, he enjoys biking, skiing, kayaking, and hiking.

“It is an honor and privilege to be a part of the UIC College of Dentistry team,” Dr. Bahcall concluded.

Library of the Health Sciences Renovated and ImprovedThe UIC Library of the Health Sciences (LHS), 1750 W. Polk St., will be a lot more convenient and comfortable for dental students and faculty and others after a recent renovation.

The University improved 23,000 square feet on the first floor.

“We added a dividable classroom,” explained Abigail Goben, Assistant Professor and Information Services and Liaison Librarian, LHS, and Assistant Professor, College of Dentistry. “It has 50 seats and desktop computers, high-definition cameras, projectors, and two-way speakers. The room can be split into two if necessary.”

A lobby display wall and event gallery has been added, as has a 1,389 sq. ft. quiet study reading room, as well as four individual study rooms with whiteboards, and eight group study rooms with wall-mounted displays.

“We’ve even brought our statue of Don Quixote down from the third floor to the first floor,” Goben said.

Being in an area of the campus with a lack of facilities for refreshment, the LHS will feature a new 1,310 sq. ft. first-floor café. “It still is under construction, and hopefully will open in late summer,” she said.

The grand opening of the renovated facility is planned for August, “but we’re happy to have people come by for tours,” Goben said.

Health Sciences Students at UIC Learn to Work TogetherAbout 800 students and 90 faculty members from 11 of UIC’s health sciences programs gathered April 13 at the UIC Forum to boost their collaboration skills at the fourth annual IPE Immersion Day, sponsored by the Collaborative for Excellence in Interprofessional Education.

“UIC can be a leader in interprofessional education and practice,” said Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs Dr. Robert Barish, who opened the event. “We have the knowledge and capacity to define, implement and test new methods and models of care.”

Health sciences students were assigned tables and collaborated with their peers to discuss fictional patient scenarios. They were divided so that a variety of disciplines were present at each table — from dentistry, physical therapy, and medicine to nursing and nutrition.

facilitators, guiding students to share their perspectives. The students watched videos filmed at the Graham Clinical Performance Center with UIC faculty members as actors. The videos focused on a patient with chronic back pain and a substance abuse problem who was referred to a pain clinic. Two scenarios were shown, illustrating strong and weak collaboration among the medical professionals.

“The team that has poor collaboration is talking over each other, ignoring what each other is saying and treating the patient like they’re not there,” said Dr. Mary Keehn, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, College of Applied Health Sciences. “It’s meant to create some shock value so students pay a lot of attention.”

Students spent three of the event’s four hours talking with their peers at their tables, said Dr. Frank Borgers, who helped design the curriculum. “We wanted students to think more deeply about what modern medicine looks like and why collaboration is really needed,” said Dr. Borgers, Clinical Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Administration.

A number of College of Dentistry faculty were involved in planning the day, including Dr. Blase Brown, Clinical Assistant Professor, Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, who had a major role in faculty training for the event, and Dr. Philip Patston, Associate Professor, OMDS.

Several College faculty acted as facilitators for discussion groups, including Jennifer Bereckis, Director of Clinical Operations; Dr. Robert Druzinsky, Clinical Associate Professor, Oral Biology; Dr. Colin Haley, Clinical Assistant Professor, Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences; Dr. Linda Kaste, Associate Professor, Pediatric Dentistry; Dr. Anne Koerber, Professor and Educational Assessment Director, OMDS; and Robin Waner, Director of Clinics.

Laskin Lectureship SetA nationally renowned and influential event, the eighth annual Daniel M. Laskin Lectureship, named for Dr. Daniel M. Laskin, former Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and sponsored by the College’s Department of OMFS, is scheduled for Friday, June 24, at the College in Lecture Hall North.

ISPD Recognizes Research ExcellenceThe third annual Dr. Indru C. Punwani Resident Research Award was presented at the Spring meeting of the Illinois Society of Pediatric Dentists (ISPD) on April 29, at Maggiano’s restaurant in Chicago. The award is in recognition of Dr. Punwani, Professor Emeritus and former

Head of Pediatric Dentistry.Dr. Punwani has been a longtime Executive Director of

the ISPD, and had urged the organization to become more involved in research and academics. The ISPD decided to name the award for him.

The 2016 award winners are: Dr. Nisha Mehta, who recently earned her MS in Oral Sciences and Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry, for her research entitled, “General Anesthesia versus Moderate Sedation: Factors Affecting Caregivers’ Decisions,” and Dr. Ben Unruh, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, for his research “Inhibition of Autism Spectrum Disorder Associated Bacteria by Polyols.” Both recipients were awarded a certificate of recognition along with a $500 cash prize.

The award highlights the importance of not only being a superb clinician, but also the importance of continuing education and research to support advancements in the field. The ISPD presents the Dr. Indru C. Punwani Graduate Student Research Award annually.

Pediatric Oral Radiology and Oral Lesions Lecture SetThe College and the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation will host a lecture on Pediatric Oral Radiology and Oral Lesions on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the College in Lecture Hall South.

The session includes breakfast and refreshments, and attendees can earn four Continuing Education Credits.

Dr. Catherine Flaitz, Professor and Chair, Division of Pediatric Dentistry, The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, and Chief of Dentistry, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, will present “A Mixed Bag of Common Oral Lesions in Children and Adolescents: Diagnostic Tips and Treatment Approaches.”

Dr. Johan Aps, Clinical Associate Professor, University of Washington School of Dentistry, will present, “Dental Radiographs are Just Dental Pictures, Right?”

Dr. Samuel Berkowitz, an Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Orthodontics, earned the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association Honors of the Associa-tion Award at the ACPA and Cleft Palate Founda-tion 73rd annual meet-ing and pre-conference symposium. According to the ACPA, the award “represents the highest expression of respect and gratitude ACPA be-stows. It is granted to an individual whose lifetime of research, health care delivery, or leadership

has advanced, significantly and uniquely, the amelioration of physical, behavioral, or social handicapping conditions of cleft lip and palate or other craniofacial anomalies.” The ACPA also noted that Dr. Berkowitz devoted “his entire life to the improvement of treatment of those with craniofacial cleft palate and lip differ-ences.”

Two members of the Department of Orthodontics attended the American Association of Orthodontists meeting in Orlando, FL. Dr. Ginu Dahiya, Graduate Clinical Assistant, Orthodontics, was named an AAO Charley Schultz Resident Scholar. Dr. Mohammed Elnagar, Visiting Scholar, gave an oral presentation on miniplate protocols for maxillary advancement.

Dr. Juveria Hussain, who graduated on May 7, won first place at the Illinois Academy of General Dentistry Case Presentation held at the College on April 21. “The

competition was among the best six selected case presentations

in the DMD Advanced Standing Class of 2016,” she explained. “My case was a comprehensive full-mouth rehabilitation which required well-planned and intensive treatment.”

Dr. Darryl Pendleton, Associate Dean for Student and Diversity Affairs, is the Chicago Dental Society Kenwood Hyde Park Branch President for 2016-17.

Laura Macias from the Office of Student and Diversity Affairs ran the Boston Marathon on April 18.

“Completing the Boston Marathon was a dream come true and a huge accomplishment for me,” she said. “My family would always tell me to believe in my dreams, have faith in my abilities, and never give up. Life is full of challenges and obstacles and to finish a marathon like Boston, you feel invincible. I prepared arduously to accomplish this goal and I would like to thank my family, my team in the Office of Student and Diversity Affairs, and the College of Dentistry Community for all their support and encouragement.”

Director, Pediatric Dentistry, was also selected for the AAPD Leadership Institute this year. These are highly competitive, and are both great opportunities for faculty development.

Dr. Rick Munaretto, an Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Endodontics and a member of the UIC Dental Alumni Association Board of Directors, started a branch of the Seattle Study Club, Windy City Seminars, seven years ago, and the club recently received a “best in study club management” award, one of only three main SSC awards. “This was a big surprise and a major compliment,” Dr. Munaretto noted. The club received the award at the SSC annual symposium in Hawaii. Dr. Munaretto’s branch was the first directed by an endodontist. The SSC focuses on comprehensive diagnosis and treatment planning of complex dental cases, and is a well-respected national network of study clubs focused on maintaining the highest standards in interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment. “We have nine meetings for our club yearly and are located in the western suburbs,” Dr. Munaretto noted.

A research study by Dr. Serena Mitchual, Pe-diatric Dentistry Resident, won 3rd place over-all in the My Kid’s Dentist Research Post-er Competition at the American Academy Pedi-atric Dentistry (AAPD) Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX.

Dr. Darien Weather-spoon, As-sistant Profes-sor, Pediatric Dentistry, Division of Prevention and Public Health Sci-ences, received notice recently of passing his specialty board examination in dental public health. He now is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health—one of only four in the State of Illinois. (And two of the others, Dr. Caswell Evans and Dr. Linda Kaste, are here at the College, too.)

DeathsMrs. Zinaida Dychie, mother of Dr. Christine Hryhorczuk, retired Clinical Associate Professor, passed away on April 27. To express condolences, email [email protected].

Dr. Robert G. Randolph, ’46, who taught in the old Department of Fixed Prosthodontics beginning in the mid-1970s, passed away in May at age 92.

Born in Camargo, IL, and reared in LaGrange, IL, Dr. Randolph attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and then joined the US Army during World War II. After the war he attended the College of Dentistry, earning his DDS in 1946, and marrying his wife, Marion, that same year.

He retired from his dental practice at age 50 to join the faculty. The department now is the Department of Restorative Dentistry.

Dr. Randolph also was an inventor, producing a portable Trailside Dentistry kit for dentists in developing countries and for veterinary oral care. He used one of the kits on dental missionary trips to Haiti and other countries. It was powered by a bicycle pump and had a strap-on chair that could be attached to a tree. The kits also were used in Ecuador, India, Peru, and Taiwan.

WeddingsMaria Limon, assistant to the Head in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, was married to John Salazar in Chicago on March 2. The couple then flew to Mexico and spent two weeks near Maria’s home. John (Juan) is originally from Puerto Rico. When she returned, OMFS staff, attendings, and residents celebrated the event with a gathering in the OMFS conference room.
